African countries, by and large, haven't even managed to master the basic art of nationalism. Tribalism is rampant, too rampant for many nations to establish a common indentity within their borders to work toward a common good. So many nations in Africa offer themselves up to more advanced nation predators simply because the game of Divide and Conquer is so academic. You're picked off one by one like weak gazelles being stalked by a pride of lionesses. How many dead gazelles would be alive today if the gazelles were to coordinate a counterattack against the lions? Too much of what it takes to participate in the modern world simply does not originate in Africa. There's American technology, Russian technology, Chinese technology, European technology, even South America manages innovations from time to time. But what of Africa? Perpetually poor, inexcusably ignorant, forever the step child. Its not the fault of any individual, I've worked with Africans educated in the US and Europe, and they are among the brightest out there. African countries and cultures are simply too mired in their roots to break loose and unleash this potential. These bright stars aren't making their way in Africa itself, but only by getting out of Africa and showing the world they're better than the hand fate dealt them.

I don't know the answer, but I will say this. If this inability of African cultures to escape the trap of traditionalism and tribalism results in billions of deaths, I will not shed a tear. Adapt or die. Its the oldest rule in life. Be lions, or be gazelles.

The AU will never get anywhere under it's current structure and Gumede is absolutely correct in his assessment. It is a replicate of the OAU which got nowhere, was riddled with debt and served no purpose other than to protect African leaders and help them retain their dictatorships. The AU is no different and will remain so until it starts to become more responsible and start putting the people of Africa first, not their Presidents. Yes, an absolute must is an agreement signed committing each member country to minimum acceptable standards. As it stands, it is doomed to fail and those westerners donating their taxpayers money to fund the AU are living a false dream.

It's time Africa took responsibility for the continent and stop masking it's failute by blaiming the west and imperialism for their bad governance and inept dogmatic and undemocratic leadership.

the EU has, there would be very few members (if any).

I'm not convinced that the EU can be imposed on Africa unless it is established that far apart nations have a sense of commonality. What connection does Cairo have with Johannesburg? Nations that are contiguous with one another may have a greater chance of establishing a common market if some of them have a significant volume of goods and services that are not found in neighbouring nations. There is no point in having a neighbour expand its markets into a nation unless there will be reciprocity.
