Prisoner Swap Integral

Johannesburg, South Africa -- A prisoner swap between Israel and Palestine is now an integral part of any solution to the current escalating crisis in the Middle East. If necessary, all the parties must agree to a neutral mediator to...

Very funny how people that disagree with this author find ways to insult him. What is wrong with a prisoner swap? Have not all sides in this conflict been kidnaping/capturing/arresting prisoners? No side in this conflict has the complete moral high ground.

MCM:

This author has poorly painted the situation. Hezbollah, operating an illegal army, challenges the Lebanese state's monopoly on the use of force within its borders and has used this illegitmate force to violate the sovereignty of a foreign state. While the author appreciates the radicalizing nature of violence, it fails to address the logic of Hezbollah and thus fails to properly diagnosis the situation. If the Lebanese gov't is too weak (and it is) to control its borders, then we should look to effective solutions of the past, namely UN forces on the border between Egypt & Israel. Such a buffer on the Israeli-Lebanese borders would limit Hezbollah's ability to attack Israel. Israel would not need to create a deterrent and would then feel free to swap prisoners. Finally, it would further undermine Hezbollah's domestic support and bolster the Lebanese government to challenge it.

Jim:

Hamas members of Parliament are not "diplomats". They are however part of Hamas that has the stated goal of the destruction of Isreal. While Isreal withdrew from Gaza Hamas responded bu firing rockets and digging tunnels. Those in the party of Hamas are the planners of these actions. Therefore they are crimmenals and will be tried for their crimes against innoucent civilians.

leigh benning:

Mr. Kramer says:
"Maybe Israel should kidnap some Palestinians so there will be sanctions on the Palestinians."

I believe Israel already has: Hamas diplomatic members of Parliament and cabinet members.

Bush likes to say democratic countries don't make war against each other. Not true. Israel has done its best to destroy a democratically elected government (Hamas) as testified to by impartial poll watchers. More than can be said about the elections in the U.S. in 2004.

Scott Auden:

It is beyond me how a purportedly educated man like the author can express such nonsense and expect to be taken seriously. However ugly the situation may have become, rewarding kidnappers by paying their demanded ransom is a recipe for nothing but further and more ambitious kidnappings. A "prisoner swap" is morally and pragmatically indefensible.

Bill Greer:

Mr. Gumede's position is patently absurd. So let me get this, Israel is supposed to immediately reward the terrorist kidnapping behaviour by agreeing to negotiate a prisoner exchange. That'll certainly ensure that a Hamas or Hisbollah kidnapping will never happen again.

Carl M Kramer:

Let's see. Sanctions on Israel, foreign troop sent to disarm Israel, etc. "Just trying to be fair".

Maybe Israel should kidnap some Palestinians so there will be sanctions on the Palestinians.

not quite:

I see you are also an exporter of plagerism. Way to go buddy

not quite:

Are you a journalist?

You harp on prisoner swapping with "Palestine", a place that doesn't exist in any substantive manner. Moreover, the major target of a swap at this point is Hezbollah, and not Hamas/PA.

Sanctions against Israel not pro palestinian/anti israel? you are out of your gourd. I suppose we sanctioned N korea and Iran because we like them? why did we do it you then ask, because they are threatening to world stability with their secretive nuclear ambitions. Israel, while not a declared nuke power, has them and people know that. Everyone also knows that they absolutely will not use them except if nuke attacked first (see iran here) and more importantly wont sell their technology to terrorists.
