Even though Ahmedinejad fever is dying down in the mainstream media, students at Columbia University have not forgotten the blistering introductory remarks their university President Lee Bollinger delivered on Monday. A petition is now circulating among students that calls on...

There was an exchange of comments and ideas and accusations, that is free speech at its best.It baffles me why the left seems to be in love with morons like Ahmed, Chavez, Castro, These guys practice every conceivable technique to silence opposition.

Questions? Too many damning questions left in the air by the hair brained performance of Lee Bollinger at Columbia U.
Columbia students, as well as like-minded people everywhere were outraged and dismayed by the belligerent questioning of President Ahmadinejad by Columbia U. Pres. Bollinger.
How else to explain his complete disregard for his career making pledge to the protections of free speech and democratic discussion?
Obviously quite a few serious questions are raised by his petulantly agressive behavior. Was he protecting his flanks from primarily Jewish American contributors to Columbia's financial war chest?
Was he playing to the larger Jewish lobby groups who react with Pavlovian ardor over anything they suspect of as being anti-Israeli?
Was he simply venting his pent up spleen over his misunderstanding the medias reporting of Ahmadinajads acknowlegably controversial remarks on the holocaust?
Finally, its simply inexplicable why he felt he must fly off the handle in such a fumbling, clumsy manner.
Perhaps, a few hours on the couch of one of the local shrinks could help him get to the bottom of his frustrations. Or perhaps, he feels he is carrying the burdens of Israel personally on his shoulders, in which case he should resign his position at Columbia and become a Israeli lobbyist or simply take a position teaching in an Israeli university.

The democracy is quit nominal in USA. Now, even the Habeas Corpus, the most elemental right in any legal system is something of the past. The questions of Iranian academics are totally valid, and you can add a lot of other anti democratic American acts through the world. The fact that USA is in better position here than most of the world, do not mean that USA is in the right position or worst, in the right direction. Everybody is free of meaningless speech, but as Valery Plain case shows, be aware of any meaning writing.

What Bollinger did was quite simply, one of the MOST BRILLIANT acts I have witnesses in many years. He CALLED OUT AHMADINAJAD FOR WHAT HE WAS-EVIL-AND A THUG. Brilliant, simply brilliant. Nothing behind his back-he confronted evil directly and told it to his face-a reality check that Ahmadinajad would NEVER have gotten but for Bollinger's simple, direct words. You see, most people don't understand that evil and thuggery don't respond to anything but complete, unadulterated directness, and in the case of Iran, that means physical force (which is going to come, whether people like it or not). Bollinger understands that, and he used no silly useless tact or "diplomacy" -that jwould just confer a kind of of legitimacy on Ahmadinajad that he does NOT have, nor does he deserve: HE IS THE LEADER OF THE GREATEST EXPORTER OF TERRORISM BY PROXY IN THE WORLD-HE DESERVES NOTHING BUT CONDEMNATION AND OPPROBRIUM.
If Bollinger even THINKS of apologizing, or Columbia U., I will personally call and ream them out. I have nothing but the greatest respect for you, Bollinger, may you continue to serve as a shining light of what the best and brightest of academia, and this country, is all about!

Yes Iran doles out aid to the needy, Iran also sends out IED's , advanced anti tank weapons and tons of military aid to organizations that even a useless organization like the UN considers terrorist. He runs a repressive religious government that has nothing close to the freedoms that you enjoy such as criticizing what you dislike. I dont doubt the good intentions and good will of the Iranian people, they are quite young and regardless of culture, very much like us. But you have to hold Ahmed accountable for the terrible things he does. If he says he looks forward to Israels destruction and then pursues technologies that may lead to a nuclear weapon, what on earth do you expect an outsider to say ?? If a man threatens you and yr family with death and then he tries to buy a gun , wouldn't a sane person be concerned ? According to yr logic for "advancement" all countries large or small including wonderful nations like North Korea s/b able to have nuclear weapons. Woudnt it be nice if every country had a nuke? of course you woudnt mind because you would never put a cap on a countries advancement , would you ? How would you like it if the saudi's said"we look forward to Irans destruction" and then tries to get a nuclear bomb ? In this country we constantly criticize Bush, why cant Iranians do the same ? because they are being ruled by a religious nut who threatens his own populace as well as others. Dont take this as an insult against the Iranian people, its an insult to Ahmed only.

"Bollinger did a great job, he invited a foriegn leader on the basis of freedom of speech and exchanging views. Ahmed got to hear what some think of him and his craziness, likewise Ahmed could say whatever he pleased. Why the bleeding heart left wants an apology is amazing, but then again there were those who cheeered Hitler, Stalin , Mao and
Castro so I guess I'm not surprised. Every generation has a small group who are detached from reality."
Alex, quoting "so I guess I'm not surprised. Every generation has a small group who are detached from reality" end of quote.
You conveniently forgot to bring up Mr. Bush, you will note my correct title introduction, whom you lose no opportunity in Washington Post, to cheer for, whom unlike President Ahmadinejad has confined himself to the White House sanctuary with very friendly news reporters with any difficult questions regarding Iraq being off limit and whom never dares to venture into neutral territories for the fear of displaying his dyslexia or being confronted with the burden of taking responsibility for more than One millions Iraqi lives and counting, sending more than Four millions overseas as refugees and counting and voiding the sovereignty of a nation with such an ancient history . President Ahmadijejad, unlike Mr. Bush not only he does not have any blood on his hands but whenever he goes somewhere, is without intention of looting the natural resources known to that country or put a cap on how much that county is allowed to advance. On the contrary he takes some of the qualities the Persian culture offers with him and then only to be called problematic by Washington. I am referring to the recent technology assistance Iran offered some South American nations. As contained, economically , as Iran is it still pours out aid to the needy as much as it can. For the record President ahmadinejad has not asked for an apology. The students of Columbia were the first to demand an apology to him for the reasons beyond, no offense intended, your capability to understand.
Accordingly, I do agree with you that every generation has a small group who are detached from reality.

it is a sad day when the President of great American University becomes part of lynch mob. To invite a head of state to speak on campus then publicly demean and insult him just before he is to speak is cheap shot.
Once there was the idea that we may dispise what you have to say, but we will defend your right to say it. I learned that thought as child studing the American Revolution.

What is factually wrong in Bollinger's comments? And do they not chant every Friday at Tehran University: Death to America, death to Israel? How dare they talk about politeness?
What about those Iranian American scholars that went there and got jailed? What about hospitality towards them? I am sure they were told courteously and politely what to say on TV about their own perfidy.

At least we Americans are not in a position to tell Burma to open up because we are neither sincere nor have credibility. While we have compromised our own constitution and have rendered our courts ineffective and inaccessible we have not "told" with sincerity, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc. to open up and these are our allies and pact comrades. As for Burma we should withdraw our forces from Iraq and land them in Rangoon and then leave Burma within three months. Thus we would have established our credibility for democracy in both places.

Bollinger was an embarrassment. I cringed at his insulting introduction. I applaud the students' petition, and hope that Bollinger realizes the reasons why he caved in to the wishes of his Jewish student body, the media, right wing conservatives, donors to the university, and found it necessary to castigate an invited guest. Bollinger needs to do the right thing and apologize for his outrageous transgression. I'm interested in hearing the answers to the questions of the Iranian academics.

As a Columbia alum, I think Columbia students are right to criticize President Bollinger. His criticism of the Iranian President went beyond reasonable bounds and tarnished Columbia's reputation as well as damaging the environment for free speech and academic exchange. This is because Bollinger's blistering attacks would seem to imply that anyone who agrees even partially with anything the Iranian president said would themselves be suspect. This is not a good start for dialog or negotiation.

Pres. Ahmedinajad has disqulified himself to be treated like the president of a sovereign country.
He came to the UN opening session, whilst his declaration concerning the 'wiping of Israel - a member country of the UN - off the map' and denying the Holocaust, are contrary to the UN's charter - signed by Iran, which should have thus been suspended from the United Nations.
Columbia's invitation to Ahmedinajad may have forced M. Bollinger to express his opinion on the man, whose actions as described above, justify his description.
Pres. Ahmedinajad was able to express himself in total freedom, and in confirming his opinion of Israel and the Holocaust and declaring that Iran has no homosexuals!!! justifies the call for the suspension of Iran from the UN and M. Bollinger's 'appreciations'.

Lee was contradicting himself when he resorted to insults and name-calling of an invited guest while at the same time said that he wanted a debate. Debates do not start with insults and Lee should know it. Perhaps, he was so taken aback by the media frenzy and his criticism for inviting him that he lost control of his self and played to the gallery. Such persons should not hold high places of responsibility. They bring discredit to the institutions, and to themselves. Lee should resign right away and save the Institution from further embarrassment.

What is over, what should be over, is placid acceptance of amoralistic triumphalism like yours.
The Greatest Generation got Hitler.
The Great Containment drove down Soviet Communism.
The ashheaps of History are waiting, not for anyone who makes the greatest sacrifices for freedom, but those who think nothing of those sacrifices.
The millions who died under Communism and fighting Communism are not forgotten. "Never forget" is the slogan of those knowing what they fight against.
China makes a mockery of even Marxist idealism with its pettiness after being spawned in Holocaust. Be afraid, be very afraid of China - their toys will kill us all, huh?
Russia is a joke - a Saudi Arabia without the robes, Putinism will not outlast Putin.
And the Middle East is not yours to decide either. It should be the free decision of Iraqis, Lebanese, Israelis and Arabs, and it will be.
And America is cool with that and with India and Brazil and whoever growing up in responsibility and freedom. Never forget that, either.

Robert of Los Angeles,
Is it Yogi Berra who used to say: ""It ain't over till it's over."?
History is a very long ride!
What is sixty years in World History? What is a hundred years?
Much of what the colonial powers did, two or three centuries ago, is here to haunt us today, will still haunt us tomorrow: it ain't over yet!
As we have learned, recently, it is better to think hard, very hard, before declaring "mission accomplished" or "it musta worked".
China is there like never before and remembers.
Russia is back: "Nobody is forgotten, nothing is forgotten," ("Nikto nie zabyt, nitchto nie zabyte") -- Olga Berggolts, Piskaryov Memorial Cemetery, Leningrad.
India, Brazil are on their way and remember.
The Middle East is boiling over, right in the middle of it.
There are still grand displays of fireworks in Afghanistan.
History is a very long ride, Robert, and few are those who know where they're going... even in Iraq.

The United States protesting Iranian involvement in Iraq is like a bank robber during his get away complaining about the audacity of a jaywalker blocking his path. The United States maintains 160,000 troops in Iraq and more than 220,000 troops in the Middle East. Every regime it has supported there since the 1950s has been repressive and anti-democratic. Actually, the US has supported the overthrow of several democratically elected leaders in the Middle East from the 1950s to the present and has never ever supported a democratically elected leader. One need only look at the repressive monarchies of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia who are our "friends and allies" to see the glaring contradictions. Yet the misinformed American public, most of whom haven't traveled beyond Cancun on foreign vacations are oblivious to the facts on the ground. I don't mind the US using its power to make little slave workers out of foreigners and to take their resources -- I'm an American and I benefit from that. But there is a point at which is it just too much and Iraq has been such a fantastic bloodletting -- so many hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died at the hands of BIG US bombs dropped on residential neighborhoods -- half of the "troops" there are mercenaries who aren't subject to any sort of criminal sanctions for murder and mayhem -- even when it's for amusement. I suppose the thing that shocks me most is how little most Americans understand about what is going on. They are like little children spoonfed these incredible ideas about a "War on Terror" and the rise of "islamofascism" which seeks to "take over the world." It's stunning that an adult could believe such things. With more than 220,000 US troops in the Middle East and US threats and control propping up unpopular dictatorships throughout the region, why do Americans buy such infantile reasons about the origins of these conflicts? They should do a poll to see how many Americans believe in Santa Claus.

I actually thought that Mr. Bollinger's speech was pretty good. Aside from the statements of his opinions, as far as I could tell everything that Mr. Bollinger said about Mr. Ahmedinejad and the ruling regime in Iran was true, and his introduction was a useful summary of the situation.
The presidency in Iran may not be very powerful, but Mr. Ahmedinejad has been part of an illiberal movement in Iran that has resulted in the executions of people for crimes that no civilized government would execute them for. This is not a matter of "East" versus "West": moral relativism does not exist where human rights are concerned. Mr. Bollinger's introduction may have been impolite, but I doubt this issue would have seemed important to people like Mahmoud Asgari and Ayaz Marhoni.
I also do not think we should remain quiet and let Mr. Ahmedinejan's own words demonstrate his unreasonableness. There have been plenty of examples throughout history where this hasn't worked, and the reactions that Ahmedinejad has received show that it’s necessary to speak out like Mr. Bollinger did.
Finally, the debate at Columbia should not be about Ahmedinejad versus President Bush, it should be about Ahmedinejad himself. I personally think Bush is a bad president. However, he is not nearly as unreasonable a human being as Ahmedinejad.
I personally think that both Mr. Bollinger’s speech and Columbia’s invitation were made with poor judgment. However, people should stop attacking this university president and look at the larger issues.
Best,
Michael
p.s. From his speech, Mr. Ahmedinejad doesn't seem to understand the scientific method.

GET OVER IT. HE CAME HE WENT AND DID NOT CONQUER.
Dear Friends:
These are fighting words, that more cubans and illegals are coming here and taking our taxpayers money away from good Americans.
Ladies and gentlemen Johnathan Mathew Walker came into this world with half a heart. His momma and daddy, a marine, during the Clinton Administration were forced into bankruptcy due to no financial assistance for his baby and or them. They had other children. He lived only 10 months with five open heart surgeries.
I got no assistance with two small children working for $650 a month as a book keeper in the oil business and then in finance field. No food stamps, no assistance that would have helped me by a home.
These denge disease illegals are now taking housing, mortgages, jobs, food stamps and beding away from African Americans, Causians, Russian Americans, Italian Americans, Native Americans, Jewish Americans that are now and already citizens. My self born here with my heritage all the way to Virginia and my great grandfather a plantation owner. Now there giving it away. Nanotech them to death for all I care. The soup starter which was all I had sometimes was something to cry over. Not that any one else cares.
Now food stamps, housing, medical supplies and care, clothing, leave no one behind, schooling and their sorry arrsses do not want to learn english. Hurray to out spoken Mr. Bennet of Arizona. They can learn to speak english and limit those coming in on our tax dollars. God Almighty how many street people in each state of all economic levels. How many in jail due to economic conditions. Good. Bollinger's vitriolic introduction wasn't just rude, it was confusing. Why invite the guy if you don't want to listen to him? People are smart enough to figure out if he's good or bad without Bollinger telling them which is which.

To readers: I made a comment of September 25, 2007 on Columbia University's Spectator student newspaper. The comment was posted,
but it was de-posted by Spectator's Editor-in-Chief John Davidson because it was very critical of Mr. Bollinger.
I challenged Mr. Davidson in an e-mail, accusing him of censoring the anti-Bollinger comments, instead of carrying on the "free speech" mission of the Spectator. In his reply to my e-mail, he asserted the "right to moderate" reader's comments.
I believe the Spectator was flooded with thousands of critical comments against Mr. Bollinger, and it was forced to shut down because they couldn't handle the avalance of criticism. Apparently, they had opened the website to comments, expecting bouquets of praise for Mr. Bollinger, but when they realized that what was coming in was a mudslide of criticism, they shut down and bolted.
My censored comments against Mr. Bollinger are available now on line under: Nikos Retsos, stroll down to title: "Condemned by Bollinger, Iranian President Defends Views of Israel...-
"Mr. Bollinger certainly deserves the Medal of the Academic Shame of the Century.../ click on CACHED for the whole article in the Spectator.
It will be reduntant for me to rewrite the whole
comment here. But the truth should shine, and
I believe that Mr. Bollinger deserves the Medal stated on my censored comments. Nikos Retsos, retired academic/ Political Sciences.

Bollinger should be asked to resign from his office as president of Columbia University. Bollinger abused the prestige of his office and caused harm to Columbia University's credibility and reputation.
On top of it all, it's most uncivlized of Bollinger to invite a guest on the pretext of academic pursuit of freedom of speech then proceed to insult his guest upon arrival. Bollinger is despicable.

It just goes to show you that a college education does not make you intelligent or aware.
The article should read: In terrorist sympathizing circles criticism extends around the world.
If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, call it a butterfly (per Columbia student body)
What a bunch of ding dongs!!!

This is a strong example of how deeply ISRAEL-FIRSTER JEWS have US brainwashed! Anything even remotely concerned with Islam is blindly criticized here.
To the other poster: who cares if the get Sharia in their country?. And as if the Jewish Talmud does not preach any hate??
The US Senators, Congressman are so corrupted by American Israel Pubic Affairs Committe and JINSA and ADL that they have lost all moral bearings and sense of justice. for their dreams of Eratz Israel and to appease the Israelis and ISRAL-FIRSTER JEWS they will sacrifice our childrens' lives. How many wars will we have to fight for Israel? How many innocent Middle Easterners do we have to kill to keep Israel happy.
Time for us true Americans to stand up and take back our country from these ISRAl-FIRSTER Jew leaches.Sever the ties with Israel now! Time for it to sink or swim. 60 years is a long time, Israel. Grow-up, "the Chosen Ones"!

I cannot believe the President of Columbia could act in such a foolish and laughable way. He behaved like a bully and said to the Iranian President essentially "now, punk, look at me, who is badder!" Bollinger has done damage to the reputation of a great institution with his unwarranted display of rant and pettiness. I think the students' petition is necessary to uphold the reputation of their beloved school. Furthermore, the university's trustees should take action to remove this embarrassment.

USA Propaganda Report Card:
Bollinger's opening remarks: D-
Expressing personal views and casting Columbia University in a highly negative light. Poor Form!
New York Times: F
The day following the event at Columbia U., the Times published a photo of the crowd either entering or exiting the event. There were two protest placards visible in a wide shot including at least 1,000 people. Oh and one Iranian flag. The photo description tried to paint the picture as a sea of protestors, which was obviously not the case. I'm not even going to get into what the article said.
The Washington Post: F
Dana Milbank's article on the event was nothing short of misinformation! He forgot to mention that the United States of America had supplied most of the weapons used in the conflict between Iraq and Iran throughout the 1980's and come to think of it, Dick Cheney has been said to be amongst the key players of that conflict.
The Columbia University Student Body: A++
The people in the crowd did make me proud to be an American. Ahmadinejad is a deplorable human being, yet the students remained orderly, respectful of the forum layed out, and held their booing to a minimum.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for the students! Great job, despite not having the greatest examples to follow.
