Attributing Musharraf's demise merely to anti-Americanism is unfair to the Pakistani people, who are driven by a genuine democratic impulse. Pakistanis and Indians are critical of elected leaders, sometimes welcoming the discipline of authoritarian rule. But their patience always runs out, and Musharraf should have known he could not enjoy dictatorship forever.

- É o maior exportador mundial de aço e aumentou a sua produção, nos últimos três anos em mais de 40%;
- As reservas internacionais da china, superiores a USD 1,3 trilhões ( a maior do mundo), e com recursos proprios, já financiam mais de 10% do deficit americano;
- É o 2o. país em acesso à Internet;

Musharaf's greatest supporters are the Indian journalists eating out of Antonia Maino's hands. These pseudo-secular journalits of the Shekhar Gupta kind will one day find their game being found out and instead of getting their monthly pay-check from multiple sources like Vatican; ISI and Maino will one day stop bullets from one of them. Those who oppose Mushy should atleast know whom to target.

I am looking at the General's past for clues on what he might do next.
He launched a 'strategic' operation in 1999 to capture heights of Kargil; an operation based on audacity indistinguishable from flawed judgement (Indians will not retake the peaks) and no apparent thought through endgame. His approach to governance increasingly appears to trace the same trajectory.
Then, when chips were really down, he blinked. It can be argued, of course, that Nawaz Sharif did. But it is unlikely that such a capitulation would have been possible without atleast tacit approval of Musharraf. I suspect that he would be yearning to blink again.
Oh well, he gave us a glimpse of that yearning already, did he not, when he stuffed all the bluster in some deep recess and reached out to the intransigent tribals of Waziristan and later to Ms Bhutto.
The trouble, of course, is that there are no takers for the 'blink' now. Justice Choudhary has gone to far on the Road of History Making to accept a compromise. The momentum of cheering and petal showering masses will not let him, even if he showed an incipient inclination.
Ms Bhutto knows that this is the worst possible time to strike even a cynical deal with the sinking General. No one else counts.
So where could he go from here? Obviously we will have to read the signs on a daily basis. A war with India (or even a provocation) does not appear viable. An issue with Afghanistan might be tried, as a desperate measure.
His frustration is boiling over as is obvious from the diatribe against 'Q' League's lack of support to him in these hard times. I know this is a wild one but if I was to put my money on anything, I would hazard the guess that after a tear-jerker public gesture, he might flee.
Watch this space....

I fail to see Shekhar Gupta's need to draw parallels with India as the philosophy of governance in both countries is very different.
Pakistan's civilian politicians have been as successful as the military in co-opting the people's pre-rogative, sovereignty of Parliament and independence of judiciary. In Pakistan, the right of people to choose their government by vote is not recognised as an inviolable right by even those clamoring for Musharraf's removal today. In the matter of this recognition, Pakistan is decades behind India.
From a common past until independence, along the way, Pakistan became an ideological state whose primary stated purpose went from being a state where Muslims would rule without being co-opted by Hindus, to being a fortress or defender of Islam, irrespective of its citizens' interests. Policies such as the Afghan engagements have been pursued without change for decades because the state's militaristic goal of extending its military and ideological influence beyond its borders were considered supreme despite the great cost to the general public in terms of refugees, arms, drugs, urban militancy, isolation from international community. No democratically elected government would be able to sustain such a policy for so long, and indeed elected governments of Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif were dismissed on the Pak military's initative in the 90s to punish them for such flexibility. In other words, the military had no tolerance for democratic compromise and considered it inimical to state interests.
So all this was foretold. Shekar Gupta and many of his English language journalist colleagues did not see 2007 in 1999 but many other Pakistan watchers in India did.

Shekhar Gupta when he went to Pakistan alongwith N. Ram of The Hindu pledged to Musharaf that they the Print and Visual Media in India would ensure that they would unseat the NDA from power. True to their pledge they have been singing praises of Pakistan and Islam ever since. They underplay Islamic Terror in India which is slowly equalling the 1000 year holocaust; they underplay the evil designs of Vatican through their plant in India at the highest level who is hell bent on destroying Ramar Sethu.
If one wonders how a nation that was battered by the 1000 year loot rape and plunder of Bharat i.e. India by Islamic thugs and a further 300 years by pale skinned barbarians from Europe one could not but think of the Stockholm Syndrome. Maybe these Shekhar Gupta's genes are bastardised with the Islamic terror that they started thinking like them!
If at all Indians should have any feeling for pakistan and what it stands for, it must be complete annihilation of Pakistan from the map. We cannot worship Rama and Ravanna together nor Krishna and Kamsa neither Hiranyakasipu and Prhalad. People like Shekar Gupta seem too clever by half in trying to worship the Hiranyakasipu, Kamsa and Ravanna put together. Let us be clear we don't need their advise. Like Rama, Krishna and Prhalad we'll have to annihilate the Asuras and the Rakshashas and we'll do it.

I don't know the intricacies of Pakistani politics. It is apparent that there are elements within the Inter Services Intelligence have favored hard core Islamic attitudes towards the United States. Whether they are at work now, coming back into contact with the Taliban and al-Qaida, I don't know. But, if Musharraf falls, and his replacement focuses more on Pakistan, and it's Islamic core, I don't see how the outcome will be favorable.
There is evidence that Iran is working insurgents inside Afghanistan by supplying them with critical weapons that will make that theater just as dangerous as Iraq is for our troops. IEDs and EFPs and the people who are trained to use them effectively won't result in fewer allied casualties in Afghanistan.
Losing Pakistan will just about cap Bush's tally. If he somehow blows the Putin furor over Bush's-anti-Missile Plan for Europe ... and loses Pakistan at the same time ... wow!
Even Musharraf isn't that inept.

I remember back in 1985, when I was in college,a Pakistani student proudly informing me that his nation's per capita income was twice that of India and that in 20 year's time, Pakistan was going to be a developed nation, while India would be relegated to the development status of Sub-Saharan Africa. Well, it's now been just over 20 years and I see that sadly for Pakistan, things have turned out a bit differently. If only Pakistan used the last 20 years to economically compete with India and emerge as a secure thriving society rather than lose itself in a vortex of fundamentalism, extremism and militarism, we may not be having this discussion right now. I hope all good Pakistanis find a way out of their country's mess.

NS, What Indian says is true. Gupta indeed said that he will "take care" of BJP. The news appeared in a Pakistani newspaper - Daily Times, if I remember right. Gupta was singing paeans of Musharraf when he recently interviewed Nilofar Bakhtiar.
Pakistan needs democracy and Musharraf is a stumbling block towards that goal. The dire forecasts of Pakistan receding into fundamentalism are a bit exaggerated. In fact Mush's recent attempts betrays his scant regard for democracy since he has been trying to rehabilitate Bhutto but not Nawaz Sharif. The question is, should the rest of the world keep approving this farce? If yes, how long.
The world needs to have more faith in mainstream Pakistanis rather than getting fixated over the fundamentalists. After 6 long yrs of dictatorship Pakistani democracy deserves a chance, howsoever imperfect, it is better than military rule.

Untill couple of days ago I had utmost respect for John Edwards the Democratic candidate for the US presidency, however his response to the Pakistan's current crisis in the Democratic debate left me completely furious. This man who claims to be a democrat actually endorsed Gen Musharaf by making an argument that the alternative to Musharaf is a fundamentalist regime. I would point out to Mr Edwards that please research the history of Pakistan before he opens his mouth at such a crucial platform. My simple question to him would be this: who does he specifically thinks in the current corp commander group of Pakistan would have the military backing to overthrow Musharaf and establish an Islamic dictatorship? It is certainly not the people of Pakistan. The people of Pakistan may be conservatives but they are certainly not extremist or fundamentalists as a majority. Shame Mr Edwards. As a proud Pakistani/American you just lost my vote.

Thomas Jefferson suggested that a little revolution now and then was a good thing for a democracy. One of the benefits is that it flushes out the corruption, if only for a while. The catch is that for that "little revolution" to work properly (i.e. reinstitute democracy at some not-too-distant date) the revolutionists must cede power back to the people. In Musharraf's case, it all looked like a pretty good thing when he took over. As the years have dragged on, he looks more and more like he might want to stay forever. This is further complicated by the large number of militant islamists in his population that want neither him nor democracy. With this reality, how can he hand power back now? The Pakistani gov't will probably turn into something like the Hamas "gov't", and then we are all up the creek without a paddle. Islamists with *the* bomb. Yikes!

Pakistan, the land of the pure was sadly never pure. The people of this country got a bad deal. The power never resided with its people as it should in a democracy. Instead of diverting their energy and resources into building democratic institutions the government kept manipulating its people into a hate India frame of mind. The dictatorships of Ayub,Yahia,Zia and Musharraf did not bring any tangible benefits. Instead the Zia and Musharraf regimes made a pact with the devil and turned a moderate people into a horde of fanatics that may consume the whole country. The democratically elected administrations were always weak, kowtowing to the whims of the armed forces that sucked up the the treasury. The F14s, the A Bomb, was all that necessary? The first priority of anyone is to provide for the welfare of his family and not go and buy a Mercedes
Democracies have their own weaknesses but the plusses are greater than the minuses. That is not true of dictatorships. It is remarkable that the people of Pakistan still have the will to demonstrate. That should be coupled with the will to build a nation of integrity and purpose. I wish the people of pakistan the very best.

n the early 1900s when it looked to the Muslims in what is now India that the British are vulnerable they began their movement to break up India. The result was Partition which clearly stated that 1) the rulers of contiguous states could decide which country they wished to join and 2) That Pakistan was for the Muslims and Muslims could go there any time they wished because it was they who decided on breaking up India for their beloved Islamic state.
The ruler of Jammu & Kashmir with its 40% non-Muslim population decided on merging with India. But Pakistan disrespected his decision and Invaded Kashmir and to this occupies a sizeable part of it despite UN Resolutions asking it to vacate kashmir.
Pakistan also denies the rights of Muslims now in India to migrate to Pakistan. It however more or less completed the ethnic cleansing of Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan where they are now less than 2 million whereas they were nearly 50% of the population of Pakistani Sindh and Pakistani Punjab before Partition.
For Pakistan to have a chance, it must
1) Vacate Kashmir. India will take it back sooner or later and better that India does not have to kill more Pakistani soldiers.
2) take in all Muslims from India. if my family had to flee from Pakistan with only their shirts on their backs then the Muslims now in India can surely be resettled in Pakistan with their shirts on their backs along with some aid.
Finally Pakistanis must decide whether they wish to continue to be Islamic.
Islam was a political and social system devised by Muhammad to unite the Arabs, to gain for them land and wealth and he created a religious facade to fulfill his agenda.
Islam is totally unsuited for democracy for the mentality of the Pakistani people.
the sooner they discard it the better off they will be.

Good analysis of Pakistan's state of affairs, Mr. Gupta!
Gen. Musharraf is behaving like an average dictator: arrogant and ignorant! He doesn't have much time now as 1 of the 3 "As" - Allah (ke Bande - children of God) has turned against him.
Pakistanis have understood the perils of autocracy and are not going to tolerate dictatorship anymore. They want change and they want Democracy. And, they want their lives to be as blissful as their brothers just across the LOC: Line of Control!
The General needs to understand and accept the winds of change before it is too late and act accordingly, because, then, the other 2 "As" - Army and America - will also not be able to protect him!

Has President Musharraf provided done more for Pakistan'democracy, media and freedom of press since 2000 than the fellow muslim countries authoritarian leaders such as Iran,Gulf countries,SaudiArabia,Egypt,Syria,Iraq,Yemen,Libya,Algeria,Tunis,Turkey and Sudan.
There are more independent television stations, newspapers, political parties and freedom of expression and education including for muslim women than any other muslim country.
The West has always used democracy as a tool to pressure the Heads of States of muslim countries to tow its line.
The failure of NATO forces for last six years to dominate the Talibans in Afghanistan is reflective of the present chaos in Pakistan as United States and NATO did not like President Musharraf to make separate peace deal in July 2006 with the tribal forces of Pakistan to monitor border along the Afghanistan.
President Musharraf was expected to fight United States and Nato forces proxy war with the tribes on Pakistan North West border who are Taliban sympathasires and kill its own muslim population and President did not oblige as well as removing Madrissahs (created at the urging of CIA to pruduce crops of young muslims(Talibans) with the religious zeal in 80's to be used against Soviets) ,hence the CIA produced Judicial issue.
The history is being repeated as Bhutto was pushed out by CIA through Zia-ul-Haq,for 1973 oil embargo and dreams of Islamic bomb,Zia-ul-Haq for being of no use after faithfully helping United States proxy war with Soviets in Afghanistan and Nawaz Sharif for refusing to stop Nuclear bomb test in 1998.

Musharraf never deserves governing Pakistan because he is nothing but a dictator who allies the USA under the all conditions. He is aware that only by this way he can carry out his brutal government. I cannot understand why there are all the brutal leaders in the Muslim countries. All the leaders in the Muslim countries unfortunately, have deep conflicts with their nations. They cannot understand their people. And unfortunately there is no Exception.

Indian,
Please understand the context in which Mr.Gupta once supported Musharaff - there was no one better to replace him and it did look like he would come thru on his promise to de-Talibanize Pakistan - not that one man could pull off such a monumental task, but that he seemed to try as hard as he promised to.
Also, he is still a credible journalist - I can see that you dont feel that way, but do you seriously think he promised Musharaff that he would "take care" of the BJP ? Man, wake up !!

Mr. Gupta is now singing a different tune vis-a-vis his favourite dictator. Not so long ago he lavished praise on Mr. Musharraf. He even declared to this dictator of a country that has been inimical to India since its very being, that he (Mr. Musharraf) needn't worry about the Hindu-dominated BJP party putting a spoke into the Kashmiri wheel. And that he (Mr. Gupta and his circle of English-language media bosses in India) would take care of the BJP. This would be the equivalent of an Israeli editor of a major mainstream newspaper telling the head of Hamas not to worry about the Likud's position on the West Bank as he (and his fellow journalistic brethren) would take care of the Likud! Mr. Gupta has very little credibility in his own country, and his opinions about the goings-on in a failed state like Pakistan, that is turning increasingly towards radical Islam, are inconsequential and, worse, quite erroneous.

Mr. Gupta has raised some very interesting avenues on Musharraf's dilemma.
Whereas I agree with most of what Mr. Gupta says ... I strongly oppose his contention (in the first para) that Musharraf's problems are because he is a staunch US ally, and that if he stops following the US his problems will retreat.
Please understand that in today's world, there is no such thing as "anti-US". In-fact, even Russia is a pro-US country.
The United States practically feeds half of the world. Americans are the most generous people on the planet. They even support those people who openly oppose them (e.g. The Palstinian authority gets close $800 million per annum in aid from USA). Can anyone imagine what the world would be if there was no USA? I guess ... we would revert back to the British, French, Spanish and Portugese colonies of the 19th century.
Having said that ... please understand that USA has a very logical policy of looking after its own interests (before it looks at someone else's). It falls upon other countries to follow the same policy about themselves. If other countries are too week to protect their own interests ... it is their own fault.
Musharraf's pro-US stance has no bearing on his current unpopularity. In-fact, he has been exposed of playing a double game. On one hand he has been threatening the West of takeover by Islamic Militants, if he is not supported. And on the other hand, locally, he has been living behind a facade of a "moderate, law abiding and freedom loving" General.
He has now been exposed. The West is realizing that Musharraf has completely failed to control Talibanization (in-fact ... it is on a swift rise under him). And now, after the sacking of Chief Justice and banning of basic rights of expression/media, his real dictatorial face of a cunning, ruthless and wicked soldier is appearing locally.
This had to happen one day. His days are numbered. Everyone can see that except Musharraf himself.

Like President Bush, Musharaf's influence in western and islamic world has diminished considerably. Mr. Gupta's statements are based on India's experience and interests. US has its own agenda to capture Bin Laden and Musharaf has not delivered even after getting F-16s and pardoning Nuclear Zar who sold nuclear technology to N. Korea and Iran (Axes of Evil)
Musharaf has a choice to get a bi-lateral security, trade, defense agreements with India that he pulls out of Kashmir and takes action against those groups and ISI that are engaged in cross-border terrorisim. India and China could be the biggest trading partners and it can help financial markets, and provide economic benfits to people of Pakistan.
Cultural exchange and tourism can also help Pak prosper as much as diverting military resources to social changes, infrastructure changes for the betterment of Pakistani people.
In election, Musharaf will loose and the second option may be that he will be eliminated by his own countrymen.

Since he ousted Chief Justice of the suprement court, General Musharrag is making more and more mistakes on daily basis. Two days before he imposed strict censorship on eletronic and print media which made people more annoyed. He is forced to take his own army generals 22 corps commanders help through emergency meeting held at his request made another blow to his credibility and more hate for army. The US administration is also making stretgic mistakes by not paying any attention on general people reaction on Musharraf's dictatorial policies which have no more acceptance in Pakistan. US must start dialog with political parties and apply their influence to press power hungry generals of Pakistan army to leave their lust of power adventurism.
