China Won't Punch Below Its Class

China probably thinks it is still an intermediate power, but rapidly on its way up. If you start with that presumption, any unqualified participating in efforts to enhance international security, necessarily dominated by the U.S., would amount to punching below what you think should be your weight on international stage.

forster:

china is becoming larger and larger, chinese people is a race of loving peace, if you look through the chinese ancient history you will be convinced. but since the last 200 years, until not far from now , china is suffering as a half-clonolized and half -feudalism country. so now they very worth the peace. they actually have fed up with wars with foreign countries and with wars against their own men, i means civil wars. all these have hinder its delelopment.
even now china can not say a rich country. most of them are still poor. so there is a long time for china to take a superpower rule. futher more, the most important thing for china to do is to get re-union. they regard tanwan as their pronvince, so they are trying to make peace talk with tanwan. but there is a posibility of waging wars. that what they don t want to see.

I also agree partially with Shekar's view.China is still not feeling fully prepared about her place on the world stage. But this is definitely changing. This is evident when we consider how China conducted in the international arena a decade ago.

It is slowly becoming more assertive and it looks like, eventually any power whether US or EU will have to lock horn with China. If I speak in a skeptic tone then I think what China is doing now is a deceptive strategy taken straight out Sun Tzu's advice.

Tenzin:

Shekar Gupta's observation on China is partially correct, the one about "intermediate power." But the total picture is that China, while projecting an image of being still a member of the Third World is building a base as the sole rival to the United States.

The soft image that China is trying to present to the international community is based on this strategy. Many people in the world are buying this image of China, to their own peril. Sooner or later we will see the true face of China the superpower.

Vulcan:

You are leaving out important issues such as Sudan!
and dont forget the pakistani reactor expansion plans as well as the gwadar port help in return for a naval post.
