Drop the Defeatism, A United West Can Triumph

Some Europeans evidently are content being the last one eaten by the Iranian crocodile. But why the defeatism when America and Europe have the power to face Iran down without firing a shot?

James. M:

Mad Mullah's Tyrants, Dictators have been around for a while, the reason they have directed their mindless madness towards the West, specifically America is they sense the divisions and weakness's we don't see, we are unable, unwilling, to fight back effectively, instead the battle rages within. We do not have much left to fight for...family ? Community ? Country ? who's country ? our culture and society has been gutted...nobody cares anymore, so they watch reality T.V.... Americans version of the Coliseum.

We posses the most powerful military in the world, we are the largest economy in the world, and they are laughing at us, daring us to do what they know we are incapable of...Mao called us a "Paper Tiger" we have done everything to prove him right. The fault is our own, and we do not even begin to address the problems or see them.

SAM:

PALISRA is the only feasible and lasting solution to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Both Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting and killing each other for more than 60 years now and unfortunately, no light could be seen at the end of this dark tunnel.
The geography and demography of the area that extends between River Jordan and the Mediterranean indicate the complexity of the current situation. Every party is trying hard to grab by mere force what is in the hand of the other. Many wars have been waged and thousands of innocent lives have been shed for this purpose.
Nowadays, almost everybody is talking about setting up two countries for both Israelis and Palestinians. This simply means that the land of historical Palestine will be divided between the two parties, Israelis and Palestinians.
I doubt very much that either party will be satisfied with his share of the cake. There are chronic problems like Jerusalem, refugees, settlements, borders, water resources that nobody on earth can sort out to the satisfaction of both parties.
The short vision of setting up two separate states could sow the seeds for more bloody conflicts in the future. Nobody can guarantee or secure permanent and lasting peace under this proposition.
A far better viable solution that should satisfy both parties and put an end to all complicated issues is available. It is the establishment of one secular country for all on the whole territory of historical Palestine that includes the West Bank and Gaza besides Israel. Jerusalem will remain united for both parties, settlements could remain where they are now provided an appropriate compensation is made to the original land owners, natural geographical borders are already in place for the whole country and the issue of refugees could be settled by allowing all refugees to return home and to be compensated for the 60 years of misery they had to spend at refugee camps. All citizens of the new state, PALISRA (Palestine +Israel), would enjoy equal rights and bear the same responsibilities.
The newly established state, PALISRA will emerge as a prosperous and safe country within a very short period of time, and citizens of this state will learn how to tolerate, respect and even cherish each other. PALISRA will become a key player and an integral part of the Middle East as yesterday's enemies will become today's friends and allies for ever.

German Voice:

I'm a Kraut and I stand with the United States of America - the greatest Nation ever! If someone is against America, then he is against me too!

Here in Germany, and also in Europe, the NAZIS and Commmunists are still alive, therefore, it's no wonder, that anti-Americanism is wide spreaded across Europe. The reason is, is that the news-media are censored, so the people do not know, what's really going on. All news they get are one-sided.

However, Americans should give a big nothing about what the European hardheads are talking, because it's part of the NAZI-Propaganda here in Europe, especially here in Germany. In addition, Europe is a safe haven for terrorists.

America is doing great and there's nothing wrong with it! Iran is a dictatorship and the people over there cannot wait to get liberated. So what?

Thanks to the finest and brightest men and women of the United States - Our Troops!

Support the Troops at www.AmericaSupportsYou.mil

God bless America, Our Troops and their Families!

PS: I stand with Israel too!

J. Rhinehart:

I don’t like the fact that Israel is getting so much money from us without anything to show from it. And the fact that they’re so blatantly aiming us at Iran. And that Bush is going along with it, not only willingly, but eagerly.

AMviennaVA:

Well, if we manage Iran the way we managed Afghanistan and Iraq, it is best to see a nuclear, even a nucular, Iran.

However, the fact remains that the US waged war against Iraq for absolutely no reason, and has been thoroughly incompetent at that. Iran has not attacked anyone.

Sadly, that makes us the danger.

As for Israel and the Palestinians, Israel as the occupying power needs to find a way to resolve the conflict.

Thom:

I love that paragraph that begins with "They will not have to fire a nuke right away. All they have to do is. . . " Oh, so that's all? Well, then there's nothing to worry about. At least not for a hundred years or so.

That's like saying all the US has to do to get the world to love it is move to South America. Simple really. . .

JohnTR:

It's so phony and mentally sick when one who knows nothing about war loves war and seeing people killed.

Dick Cheney avoided war in Viet Nam with 5 deferments, yet he architects the war in Iraq and loves sending people to war. Bush joined the National Guard to avoid Viet Nam, yet he was so enthusiastic in waging the war in Iraq with fabricated reasons, spent billions of tax payers money, dragged the whole world into waging war with Iraq then and Iran now. An acrophobic Hitler built the Nazi nest on the top of one of the highest muontains in the world...

Mr. Singer:

I agree with you that Iran could, and should be dealt with in a peaceful manner regarding her nukes, and fermenting hostile attitudes against her neighbors. But I for one don't really see that happening. Not with Russia getting cozy with Iran, and China as well. I just don't think that you can get all the major players to the table at one time, let alone agree. Both China and Russia want and need a sphere of influence in the Middle East, just like America does. The point of that political game is to have a bigger sphere of influence than your competitors. Ideally to make sure your competitor has zero influence. All of our governments have been playing this dangerous game for years. I think the only variable that has changed in this game is some of the players.
Those players being some of the more radical middle eastern countries. I think that is where the mistake is. The major players are treating the minor players like they did the small European, and South American Countries back in the day when they played the same game with those countries. I just don't see Iran, and Syria agreeing to anything as long as they have another major player who will befriend them. But I really do hope that your right.

Actually, in less than 100 years, oil will no longer be relevant either because alternate energy sources will be in use, or because given what you advocate, there won't be enough left on earth to make it an issue.

A display of ignorance - has the writer not noticed that major Gulf producers, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and other major producers, Russia, Nigeria, Mexico, Venezuela (in no particular order) all either have nationalized production or have local companies involved in the production business?

>

To what end? Because it is under attack? By whom? Since when did nukes become defensive weapons? Perhaps one can talk about deterrence, but Saudi Arabia and Kuwait need no deterrence other than to make their product freely (of course not totally freely since they are in a cartel) available on the market.

Has the writer not noticed that they are getting rich off that trade?

>

The sad part is that aside from this writer's ignorance, his views reflect the misguided approach of many in Arab countries that the way forward is through arms, rather than through building schools, hospitals, factories, and infrastructure to make the lives of their people better.

This myopic view makes the world more dangerous for us all -- it allows misjudgments like the Iraq war to happen.

"...the longer WE wait to confront Iran...the more WE...etc. That "we" means American blood and treasure while the likes of Singer and the foul Israelies eggs on and connivce lie and cheat to get the US to war again. Unbelieveable.
Does Singer not see the wrath in the world growing toward his own?

letitia:

Saul. Saul. Do you mean if we let Iran have some bombs maybe the consequence will be the DEpopulation of Israel? That the vicious Jews will leave Israel? Disperse? GOLLY, I thought Iran's getting the bomb was bad, but that outcome
would be perfect. The Palestininans could return to their own land. A little justice. Unless, of course, the population of Israel flocked to the United States. Have to be careful what you wish for.

Zoltan:

Saul Singer, you're an insult to jewish intelligence. You're whining all the time about all the same things.

Alex:

I agree with Robert Rose, the poster above. The writer has an infantile obsession, or alternatively very paranoid and unsure of the realities of the real world.

The real world is much larger and more important than Israel and its 6m people and a territory the size of a couple of private ranches in America. If you are genuine about democratic principles, yield to the majority in the world.

Noah:

That smarmy smirk is just awful, and really makes it difficult to read anything you write.

Maghrebi:

In less than 100 years, oil will become a scarce resource.

The Iranian government has to duty to protect the people's resources from western imperialism lead today by the United States government and the imperialist think-tanks feeding it.

Iran has no other choice but to arm itself with nukes.

I urge the coward Gulf states to arm themselves before it is too late.

Anonymous:

It is all a question of perspective. For the Israeli and the Kurd, there is no question that Iran needs to be contained or wiped out.

Actually Iran personified by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

From a strategic perspective, if Iran ever had nukes and used them openly, it would suffer devastation.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may or may not have said that Israel should be wiped off the map -- as distinguished from saying that the Israeli government would be wiped out -- there is some question about what he said and the proper translation but I have not heard anything definitive.

Regardless, it is unacceptable that talk of wiping Israel off the map goes on at all -- after all, behind the abstract concept of Israel is a population of 5.7-6.5 million people.

In the final analysis, Iran may be contained by the neighboring Sunni countries but we do not know that.

The fundamental problem is that we are not even talking to the Iranians. Isn't it wondrous that talking to China has produced some sense of stability -- with uncertainties to be sure -- and talking with N. Korea produced an agreement. Recently, President Bush said in Vietnam that old enemies can get together and talk.

Yet, we don't talk to Iran, Venezuela or even Cuba.

If Iran is a threat it is because perhaps by not talking, we give them no alternatives ... nothing to gain, nothing to lose, so they go about doing what seems to tweak us the most.

One would have thought that by the dawn of the 21st Century we'd have realized that war is not going to accomplish anything in terms of long term solutions.

"So would I say more dangerous? Nah, just plain stupid. As for Iran, now that's what I call really dangerous."

Neena, "just plain stupid", with the arsenals the plain stupid have at their disposal, "that's what I call really dangerous"!...

Neena Gopal :

The term more dangerous is misleading. The one is not 'more dangerous' than the other. The United States has been foolish and ill-advised on its Middle East policy, on its intervention in Iraq, its bluster over Iran and now its appeasement of North Korea! On Afghanistan, it is allowing events to spiral, leaving the door open for the re-entry of the Taliban. So would I say more dangerous? Nah, just plain stupid.
As for Iran, now that's what I call really dangerous.

Zhukov:

Interesting parallels, in 2007!

UNITED STATE OF KURDISTAN: "IRAN SHOULD BE WIPED OF THE MAP."

Orders to German Army Group North, Eastern Front, 1941: "The Fuehrer has decided to have Leningrad wiped from the face of the earth. The further existence of this large town is of no interest... In this war for existence, we have no interest in keeping even part of this great city's population..."

UNITED STATE OF KURDISTAN:

WELL, USA SEEMS DANGEROUS FOR EUROPEAN COUNTRIES. BECAUSE USA IS TAKING OVER THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC, AND TRIES TO ABOLISH EUROPEAN COLONY IN THE MIDDLE EAST, WHICH IS GREAT. YES, AMERICA SHOULD ATTACK IRAN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. IRAN SHOULD BE WIPED OF THE MAP.
EUROPEAN COUNTRIES WILL LOSE THEIR NATIONAL INTEREST IN THE REGION IF IRAN DEFEATED BY U.S.A, AND I HOPE GEORGE BUSH DO IT SOON. AND WE ARE AS THE KURDS SUPPORT THE USA FOREIGN POLICY,ANS ALSO I HOPE USA CHANGES MIDDLE EAST MAP.

ATTACK AND DEFEAT ENTIRE TERRORIST THROUGH OUT THE WORLD MR BUSH GREAT LEADER.

Robert Rose:

This obsession with Iran, in some circles, is all it is: an obsession. Anyone understands full well whence that obsession comes.

Hitler's Germany was a threat to the world. Iran is not.

It has become fashionable, and an infantile pastime, to deride Europeans who lived in the '30's. Yet, that Hitler's Germany was a threat to the world was known to the Europeans at the time, even to those who opposed war to the limit, many having fought one of the most costly ones, in human terms, only a few years before. They felt no urge to talk "tough", convinced as they were that there was more to life and civilization than permanent conflict and perpetual war.
