Proliferating fear and hypocrisy

On Friday, September 23, Western countries collectively nipped in the bud a resolution initiated by Arab states at the UN nuclear agency demanding Israel sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), use atomic energy only for peaceful purposes, and help make the Middle East a nuclear weapons-free zone.

Through this act the Westerners demonstrably proved their hypocritical approach toward nuclear weapons proliferation and that they still look down at developing countries. This action was a continuation of the past colonial policies which "planted" Israel in the region.

Asking Israel to sign the NPT is not an extraordinary demand, and this was the least request on the part of countries which have asked the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to supervise Israel's nuclear activities.

Both the US president and the US officials have many times spoken about the danger of nuclear weapons that might be produced by Iran. They know well that their accusation of making nuclear weapons is a myth and there is no truth in it. This is not actually what they are worried about. Their real worry is the emergence of a powerful, advanced and independent Iran. They are opposed to Islamic Iran's progress. They know very well that we are not making nuclear weapons. They do not want this sensitive region that holds the world's major oil reserves and this country that is independent and lives in the light of Islam, to flourish and avail of modern technology and scientific progress.

Point no. 23: the US and the West Want a Totally Dependent Iran

The truth is that the West prefers that the countries of the Middle East region including Iran to always be dependent upon it. That is the reason they say: It is OK for you to have a nuclear power plant but you should purchase its fuel from us. A few years ago in one of my speeches in the holy city of Mashhad I said if the West and the Europeans had oil, which our country and the Middle East have today and if we had to buy this oil from them, they would have sold each barrel of oil more expensive than the dirt cheap price at which they purchase it today from the region. Moreover, they would not be willing to give us oil. They are concerned about everything that makes regional nations independent and keeps them on their own feet. They want this populated and oil rich region that has vast underground resources to be always in need them; thus they are opposed to technology. They are opposed to our youth becoming scientists; they are opposed to us having nuclear energy and if they could they would oppose our having oil resources. This is while in the past they took advantage of the inability of these countries' leaders and looted our oil. For many years Iran's oil was in the control of the British, they only gave a small amount of oil to the affiliated and incapable government of that time and took the rest of it for themselves. Then the Americans and others entered the scene and seized authority; that's what they want. They are concerned that a country like Iran can have a nuclear power plant and produce the fuel for this plant itself and not beg the Europeans and others; that is the issue.

Point no. 24: Nuclear Technology is Necessary for People's Life

Nuclear energy is a valuable technology and the product of advanced science and is necessary for people's life. Many of the power plants in developed countries are nuclear power plants. The production of electricity is one of the things nuclear energy does and this is a privilege for the country. They don't' want the Iranian nation to have this privilege, that is what the fight is about, but they are lying that they are afraid Iran might make an atomic bomb. They know that making an atomic bomb is not in our program. The Iranian nation should know, our youth should pay attention that what today is brought up in the Western especially US propaganda about nuclear energy is aimed at depriving the Iranian nation from this technological and scientific progress; this is our right, why should we be deprived? Yes it is the Iranian nation's right, it is science, it is technology, it is healthy for the environment, it has medical uses and it is a hope for progress for the country's youth. I, too, find it very discouraging that Mr. Singer is choosing to use this weblog as a bully pulpit, rather than actually addressing his critics and their concerns. I would've at least liked to see him support his previous quotes, that indicated the need for regime change in Syria and Iran, in addition to Iraq and Afghanistan.

If he chooses to grossly overgeneralize and minimalize his critics as people who would "wish Israel away", even when they directly quote and critique his own statements... well, to me, that indicates a level of disrespect for his readers, which is frankly a common criticism of those who blog vs. those in the traditional media.

The land Israel occupies *IS* an issue, if only because Israel refuses to accept any impartial observer's reasonable definition of a just peace. A good example of this is the most recent negotiations with Syria on the Golan Heights, where Israel refused to give Syria *ANY* of the land that borders the Sea of Galilee, which is arguably the most important region, for without water, there is no settlement, no value to the land returned, and no life. On a local level, you would essentially be depriving the original owners of that land -- farmers, primarily -- of their livelihood. And why? Because Israel is unwilling to return the most vital resources it holds on to. In fact, Israel's own government has mentioned that this region cannot be given back, because it safeguards Israel's water supply.

But all that water wasn't "Israel's water supply", Mr. Singer.

To suggest that the occupied land doesn't matter is an indefensible position, UNLESS you believe that the ends justify the means and that might makes right. Lots of political philosophies do believe this. Neoconservatives, totalitarians, fascist governments, etc.

Needless to say that if people were aware of how easily this technology, if not curbed by the UN, could be used by the regime to produce nuclear weapons, and how such power could weaken the already humble foundations of democracy in Iran by giving more military power to the most radical and fundamentalist parts of the regime, they'd hardly be backing it as they do now - if we accept that they really are.

It's really a shame that people have been kept uninformed about the dangers of achieving nukes by this regime and now a few dozen are deciding for the future of millions of ordinary Iranians.

That would be nice if you could answer all the comments and questions in this room, not just the ones you feel more in common.

Second, we don't call the people who fight to free their county " terrorist". The real terrorists are the ones who occupied their countries and killing them on daily basis.

How can you talk about human rights in Iran after what you have done to Lebanese people. Still cluster bombs are killing childrens every day.

Iran's goverment doesn't want to destroy Israel as you mistranslate their comments. They want Zionist regime to end the accupation of Palestin so the people can return to their own land and decide their own goverment, no bomb, no threat.

Third, the history of Zionist regime shows that it never respected any international laws, so how can such a violent regime is allowed to have a nuclear bombs but, Iran can not be allowed to have even peaceful nuclear program?!

Some of us would rather treat Iran as a sovereign nation, than as a child who had misbehaved.
Iran is a country with different peoples, different opinions, and human beings, much like Israel and the US. The only difference between us and them, is power. We have it, they do not, but they're going to, and (gasp) might we not.
It is important to treat others as you wish to be, because some day down the line, the shoe may be on the other foot.

Where in the US Constitution or the Israeli equivalent does it say that you (we) get to decide whether or not another country gets to use a certain type of power, or obtain a certain kind of weapon?

Wading through the responses to my post, most of which seemed to either wish Israel out of existence or urge Jerusalem to bomb Teheran without delay, I was touched by the posts by Shahla, Babak Tashak, and Afsaaneh, all writing from Iran.

The latter wrote, "I am an Iranian doctor and 2 years after my graduation I am still looking for a job. While the Islamic government of Iran is donating money that belongs to me and other young Iranians, to Lebanese terrorists and other Arabs. Nuclear energy is an scam of this government. We want Islamists out of Iran."

Free people everywhere must stand with those who are not.

The Iranian regime wants Israel destroyed, which can only be accomplished through genocide against my family, my country, and my people. I don't want Iran destroyed, I want Iranians to be free.

I feel more in common with these Iranians who, deprived of freedom, know what it means, than with those who live in freedom and yet seem to regard America and Israel as their great enemies.

You have hit the nail on the head.

What you wrote is the prime example that sanctions won't work. If there were no sanctions Iran might be a productive part of the international community. With sanctions, it's economy is dying, people can't find jobs, and leave the country. Leaving people with fewer options in the country and in charge.
Not to mention that it is the moderates who are forced to leave to find jobs.

So, are sanctions a good idea? Clearly not

Mark Kraft, you had me until that last post of yours. I agree in general with your statements, but you get on your high horse a little too much without knowing some important facts. You say:

The fact is that mobile phones and internet are widely available in Iran, which is why the majority of the youth or pro-West. They have access to news and read it more readily than the average teenager here in the U.S. Iran, next to Israel, has the highest percentage of internet users in the middle east. Farsi is the third most used language on the internet in Asia, behind english and chinese. Just about everybody has mobile phones, even in small provinces.

Then you say something that is absolutely stupid:

"Take the time to educate young people in medicine, in technology, and to see to it that they don't grow up to be Islamists."

The truth is that Iran has one of the largest rates of literacy in Asia. It has the largest amount of Brain Drain in Asia over the last few years. It produces hundreds and hundreds of thousands of Doctors, Scientists, Engineers, Physicists, chemists per year. The problem is that they graduate with no prospects for jobs inside the country, so they go to Canada, Italy, and India. Yes, even India taps into the expertise that Iranian professionals provide. Many Iranian doctors go to India and prosper. Those who stay behind are either unemployed, or get multiple low wage jobs, and a few are lucky enough to get stable government jobs.

If the sanctions were not in place, outsourcing to Iran would be a very attractive option, especially with the rising costs and issues with outsourcing to India. The sanctions have not limited the Iranian from accessing technology and reverse engineering it.

In oppressed societies such as Iran, USSR and former Soviet Bloc countries, a few things that thrive are education, sports, and an appreciation for secular democracy. This is why in U.S. colleges, you found so many eastern european teachers and researchers in the fields of engineering and science.

After carefully considering your article and the post comments of the readers. I'm delighted to remind you in an ordinary American way that:

Israel is a terrorist state that has engaged in illegal occupation for 38+ years. Iran is giving financial support to the only resistance groups in the area. That these groups have engaged in suicide bomings in reaction to this illegal occupation, is partly Iran's responsiblity, but it is no less a grievous responsibility than what the US bares for supporting the Jewish terror state that perpetually keeps the entire Palestinian population under PERPETUAL MILITARY OCCUPATION.

I do not want to be rude or anything, but I live in Iran myself and it is only uneducated people that talk like shahla, afsaaneh, and Babak Tashak, Many of our people are being completely brainwashed by Exiled Iranian channels which ofcourse is funded by US+Israel, these channels always blame Iranian government for not serving its people right without giving any good reason, so therefore these people think that, if Iran is given a chance(which they have and they are going towards it) Iran should rejuvenate in just a year, and forgetting about the war and the revolution, which has dramatically dropped the countries economy. It is not a toy, it's a country we are rebuilding, so please understand people
