Tony Blair's legacy has many parallels to Britain's revered leader of World War II, Winston Churchill. But while Churchill sent British troops into battle to defend their homeland against Nazi invaders, Blair has sent his soldiers to die for a cause not their own. It is that of the friend who may bring his legacy down: George W. Bush.

Now this is funny. Islamics from the sudan and syria and a communist from china have decided that Blair was not for freedom. Three of the most repressive regimes on the planet, who think that civil rights mean you can be allowed to live only if you worship the state religion. Now that is absurd.

1) There remains a UN mandate for the coalition to be in Iraq. So you have some work to do at the international level
2) The Shia majority and the Kurds, except for being slaughtered at the hands of terrorists, are doing just fine - relative religious freedom under the quietist Al Sistani, many political options (again SCIRI has announced its proWestern, anti-Iran agenda). How can you prop up Moqtada who is fading fast?
3)The Sunni tribals can be co-opted as well as the urban educated Baghdad Sunnis will come back if there is peace. Even Rummy's "dead-enders" - Baathist insurgents have broken with the Al Queda.
Saddam is dead. Al Queda is hated by every regime and losing its "pop idol" status whenever you stare it in its bloody face. It's over baby.
And yes, we're coming for you, Baby Assad.

Of course what you write is excellent, Mr Moubayed. I always read your contributions to Asia Times Online.
But, coming to the essense of this forum, right as you are, I must say that the more convincing case gainst war from a scientific perspective was made, passim, in 2002 by Freeman Dyson in his Templeton Award Acceptance lecture, and by Richard Dawkins in several articles published in The Guardian. The most compelling case from a historical and military perspective was made by Neil Ferguson. But, know-it-all Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Fukuyama et al. rusehd-in where the angels of peace feared to tread.
They are now where they are-- let them reap the whirlwind. You say:"How about the suffering of the innocent Iraqis?" My heart bleeds just as yours does or as do the hearts of so many decent people in the West.
But then, we, of the so-called 'third world' ought to have known better when the US/CIA used us to fight a proxy war for them against Russia when it invaded Afghanistan in 1979. We, and in particular Arabs and Muslims, ought to have known better when Saddam/Iraq blindly attacked Iran in 1980 even as, with the whole world as witness, Pentagon strategists and their lackeys in the press wrote overtly inflammatory hate-literature opposing Sunnis and Shi'ites and went so far as to say that Iran could be stopped only if the Sunni (puppet) states rise against Iran.
We obliged.
I hate to think, and to have to say, that we may also have our heritage of the whirlwind to harvest!

Commenting on the Global Power Barometer today - If America doesn't get it soon. (OH you meant it in the non-ominous sense) 6 years without an attack on the home soil. A major strike on US would also be "getting it". But of course you mean "get it" like getting smart. And getting smart is what? - doing nothing. Pakistan is our fault - give me a break. Again I say, appeasement is not a strategy. IRAQ is SUDETENLAND and we struck back and IT didn't go forward as THEY (the Islamofascist radicals) planned

The article is long and in appearance erudite, but in fact provides little substance. That the war turned out to be overall a failure in results is a largely undisputed fact. But this does not address the two fundamental questions required to judge Blair's leadership in the war:
1. Was Blair morally justified as a leader to support the war?
2. Was the war winnable?
In regard to 2, most people have either no idea, or answer negatively, using in particular "lessons from the past" to justify that failure was this time again a necessary outcome.
The fact is that the war was winnable, provided that systemic transformations were brought in the doctrines used, the goals pursued, and the mechanisms in support of these goals - new mechanisms to fight insurgency wars, new mechanisms to rebuild a society plagued by corruption and violence, new means to collect information, and leverage based on these mechanisms to win control of dynamics of iraqi society.
That is a tall and long list, but it could have been garnered. The failing of Blair, as a statesman carrying such an exceptional responsibility, was to fail in the insight required to push the enterprise through this exceptional transformation.
Blair is an exceptional man, with exceptional probity and courage (that few political people in Europe or in the world have - they all congregate and bleat against the war on flimsy reasoning). His failing was in not using his capabilities to 1. recognize the immense task ahead and rally against poor reasoning, and 2. in indeed, in not calling on the US administration when blatant mistakes were made.
Two symbolic points come to mind, where a constructive dissidence from a true leader would have helped: 1. The (in)famous point where Bush declared mission accomplished on the aircraft carrier - when in fact all the challenges of Iraqi civil reconstruction were looming. and 2. When Rumsfeld sat idle declaring that "bad staff happens" as looting went in gear, and disintegration of Iraqi society began.
These were highly important points, and indeed, had Blair been not only exceptional, but super-exceptional, one would have expected him to course correct and avoid the tragic mistakes that unfolded.
For this lack of talent, he became embroiled in a descent into failure, and for that, he bears heavy responsibility. This being said, in a universe populated by mediocre people, he stands out for trying, and being courageous all the way into unpopularity.

Sami's opinion i'm sure is popular in the Arab world. In the West, it's irrelevant. We've been watching Muslims slaughter each other for 50 years and many of them slaughtered by Assad's father in Lebanon and at Hamma in his own country. As I write this 500,000 Palestinians live under apartheid conditions inside of Syria.
Whatever opinion he has of Blair, I can assure you Western contempt for Arab tyrants and autocrats trumps that 1000X.

Much of the problem stems from the false comparisons with WW II. Osama is not Adolf. Toni is not Winnie.
During WW II Syria and Iraq were 'mandates' - sounds better than colonies - of France and Britain respectively. It is different when dealing with independent countries.
One item is consistent: Churchill botched the Desert War. His constant and incompetent intervention extended this conflict by at least a year, possibly two. Blair was similarly challenged.

I rather liked this piece but I think the real closest parallel to Blair among former PMs is surely David Lloyd George. He and Blair just have so much in common.
Both originally came to prominence via a reputation for non-ideological competence. Both stood far to the right of their parties and on important decisions relied on opposition votes to get their way. Both were mistrusted by rank-and-file members of their parties. Both were Christians who became known for dubious ethics and lack of honesty. Both loved to hang out with the rich and famous. Both were embroiled at the end of their careers in scandals over the selling of public honours.
Both harboured dark fears about easterners and Muslims, and considered them irredeemably evil. Both got into ridiculous, unprofitable fights in the western Asia (Chanak in Lloyd George's case), which were really about grabbing power and wealth, even though both peddled confused notions of standing up for western society and its values.
Both left office deeply unpopular and with a reputation for slipperiness. Both ended up feeling misunderstood, and blaming the British people for failing to see their greatness.

While quite probably Mr. Blair's effort were the last kick of the [mythical] Imperial UK, I believe that the greatest problem he created was indirectly related to Iraq and its consequences.
He made many efforts to divide Muslim and WHITE [mostly Anglo-Saxopn heritaga peopele -e.g. UK, USA, Australia, Canada etc] societies. His endevour to insure "security" mirrored the effort of the DECEIVER/DECIDER in undermining the basic tenets of Democracy.
His other great failings in the long run were his apelike imitation of the Bush's "received wisdom" regarding economics of the UK and of the World. These two "compassionate" leaders recreated the class divide of the 1920-s, the wide open laissez faire robber-baron operation [Private Equity and Hedge Funds operating in the interest of immediate monetary gain, and to hell with the working peons], where all tax/policy breaks go to the top income earners.
To protect his "political hide" Mr. Blair also imitated the great Commander in Chief, and permitted the corruption of civil service and political corruption to greatly increase. The sins were to be buried under "NATIONAL SECURITY" emblem, political positions were for sale [in th House of Lords] etc.
While Mr Blair in opposition to Mr Bush talked the great talk of "global warming" the actions were pretty similar from the two leaders --- do something tomorrow...
So notwithstanding Mr. Blair's monumental success with respect to North Ireland, I would look for a negative [though not as bad as Mr. Bush] positioning in the history books to be written in the near future.

Similarly ludicrous is the titling of today (May 14)GPB as victory of Iran with "new Arab ties" and Cheney as "evil":
What you are seeing is a bit of the twisting of the lion's tail, which has been practiced against the US and Britain for a hundred years. Of course, one only does that if one can get away with it. And we're big enough in so many ways to ignore pictures and comments and posturing, as in the final analysis the Arabs are not going to put the "fox in the henhouse" to mix metaphors, by allowing Iran to "provide protection" jointly for the Gulf region.

Odd, AFP and AP seem to think that "Shiite Al-Fadhila Islamic party which is the leading political force in Basra, but less important nationally". Also in competition in Basra and all Shia areas is SCIRI which just announced an anti-Iranian, moderate agenda.
Moqtada: "His pictures can still be seen on the walls and monuments of Basra, showing how powerful he really is." That's a bit of a ludicrous statement. And if the Sadrist movement is intimidating, then they are a bunch of thugs who may yet be put in their place, not by Brits or Americans, but their fellow countryman.
A Syrian writer can hardly be taken seriously on this issue unless he is a dissident against the tyranny of his own leadership and also dissenting against the support of Hezbollah and other terror groups. I don't believe that can be said of Sami Moubayed.

Outside the Bush White House, Tony Blair is the man most responsible for the Iraq debacle. He knew that Bush was fabricating evidence to trump up war causes. He knew what the intelligence said of Hussein's depleted threat. He knew that the reconstruction would be a failure.
Instead, he was the great enabler, telling Americans that Bush had strong international support. Without Blair, Americans would have seen that all of our major allies opposed this operation as a mistake. Without Blair, Bush's "Coalition of the Willing" would have been a handful of Eastern European states that were bribed into sending a few dozen troops. Without Blair, Americans would have woken up much sooner to the dangers of Bush's quixotic warmongering.

I greatly enjoyed reading the article. It was informative and provided many interesting observations that I will consider. As for the PM's history, if the USA ever has an "Arnold Amendment" that passes, Blair would get my first vote if he were qualified. I have heard that Blair is considered "Bush's poodle," but I have to observe: that poodle is sharp, well spoken, well mannered and like the horse that I own, probably a heck of a lot smarter than its master! In summary, if all the dogs that are currently leading many of the nations were put into the Westminister ring, I'd give TB Best in Show honors.

the real mistake is that during the crusades we did not march to mecca and destroy it and everything it stood for.

Of course the paralell is not quite so exact.
In 1941 British and Commonwealth blood had been spent freeing Syria from the Axis-leaning (and assisting) Vichy French regime. Syria had just been used by Nazi Germany as a supply route to assist the pro-Axis coup d'etat in Iraq, and was itself was still legally a French mandate from the League of Nations and not an independent state.

Tony Blair is a tragic figure forever linked to Buhs's Iraq War failure. Tony Blair will be remembered as Bush's poodle.

dear Sirs.
I would not worry about the historians as it will depend on which country they will originate from and what will be the flavor of the day.
just read the comments above.
bright, idealist, courageous,he did" what he thought was right ".I believe him. I also thought it was right. I still do.the level of incompetance of the current US administration could not have been predicted.
I am afraid it will be a while till we see the likes of him in a position of such power.
Hillary maybe ??

No body is an angel.Everbody makes mistakes. The worst thing here is that Bush and Blair still arrogantly deny committing the crime of invading Iraq.Iam surprized how they have managed to get away without impeachment,so far.

Thanks Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi for continually urinating on America's image to cause this BS, and those of you on the hard left who don't think it's their fault can learn some Arabic and see their "leaders" on the headlines of Arab papers EVERY DAY trashing this country. Utter treason.
