The Real War and Prospects for Peace

Damascus, Syria -- Anybody in the Arab world who believes that Hezbollah will win this war, liberate the Sheba Farms or destroy Israel is simply nurturing a fantasy. I am amazed at the number of people who argue that "miracles...

The Sader-Nasrallah connection is one I've been wating for. I can't believe M. Sader can stand by and watch Nasrallah posters sprout up in Iraq without itching to get in on the anti-American anti-Israel game.

That development would be the only way Hizbollah can "win" this war, because Maliki is a Sader appointee, and he's now the darling of the House and Senate. If Sader were to get fired up...watch out.

-Sorry Sam but i will have to disagree with many things in this article..

1st, the God argument.. It is vague and lacks belief!

-The article has many contradictions, for example:1st you say that "hisbullah winning this war is a fantasy" then you state that "...Israel cannot wipe out and defeat a small numbered of armed guerrilla warriors..(Olmert) are still unable to liberate the two Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah on July 12." On ground, Hizbullah is the one in control ..

-When talking about shifting the public opinion against Nasrallah and putting pressure on him is invalid.. What happened up to date is the exact opposite! People at the begng were balaming Nasrallah for miscalculating the whole thing, but the Isralei aggressive attacks through its pre-prepared war+ American/international support +Arab green light have in fact turned those who opposed Hizbullah in the past to his side. I believe the dilema you spoke about lies on Olmert's shoulders now rather than Nasrallah! the pressure is escalating oin Israel rather than Lebanese.. as u said, lebanon has nothing to lose anymore, their losses made them stronger and brought the whole Arab world together for the 1st time after 1967!Unlike Abdunasser, Nasrallah is a man of reason and realistic decisions/calculations rather than passion and emotions, thats what made ppl believe him and support his cause in this war! but at the end a decision of "war" and/or "peace" war is a risk and the gamble is on TOLERANCE!

Thank you Sami for a very illuminating piece. I hope people in the US pay attention to the voices of moderation in the Middle East instead of adopting the racist/hawkish discourse repeated by Bush and Israeli leaders.

The writer says that "surely" the United States attaches greater importance to its own security in Iraq thn it does to the security of Israel. Would that it were true! The resolution passed by Congress the other day giving Israel a carte blanche
should have disabused the writer of any such notion. The power of the Israeli lobby in the United States, a lobby largely composed of rapture-ridden Christian evangelicals, guarantees that Israeli interest, however ill-conceived, will trump America's own interest every time.
