Mutual respect would be a good starting point for the focus of the next U.S.-Iran talks. Abiding by international law and political consensus would be another one.
The two sides should consider creating a Helsinki-like approach to the issues that divide them, recognizing some spheres of influence but also pushing concepts of universal rights that apply to all people.
The U.S. should recognize that it cannot dominate Iran and the Middle East just as Iran must recognize that it cannot dominate its Arab neighbors either. Renouncing mutual hegemonic aims would be a good issue to have as background atmospherics for the talks.
