The Iran issue is serious, but European diplomats have been working intensively on it for years and there is no sense of panic. Diplomacy is a very time consuming business. The combination of U.S. muscle and European negotiating skills (and knowledge of the region) will lead the way forward.
The deep problems with the Iraq invasion are widely seen to have foreclosed a U.S. military intervention in Iran. The sight of the U.S. using its tremendous military power "here-and-now" in Iraq, in an ill-conceived and uninformed campaign, frightens many Europeans.
