Yes, it has been 16 long, arduous and lonely years since we reclaimed our sovereignty on May 18, 1991. Yes, the recognition that we have aspired to achieve may seem as distant as ever. Yes, detractors have called us and still call us all kinds of names. Yes, enemies who are hell bent on breaking our will and sowing discord among our people have used all kinds of deceptive tactics and hired spin-doctors to discredit our cause. Yes, the world refuses to look at our achievements, our democracy and the oasis of peace we have created. Yes, weasel-hearted African leaders have been warned that recognizing Somaliland would open the gates of hell and monsters would emerge in scores from their scandal ridden closets. Yes, our people suffer due to the absence of diplomatic relations, international credit lines and regular trade agreements. Yes, some of our politicians, some of our opportunists, some of the greedy among us, some of our weaklings and some of the wishy-washy individuals have been trying to weaken our morale.
But, against all these odds, as people of Somaliland, we have only one thing in mind; that all roads lead to recognition. From day one, we have decided that there is no rollback, no reverse gears and most importantly no free ride to our coveted goal of gaining our sovereignty, building our country and gaining recognition. We have been watching other countries with less democracy, less peace and less ethnic cohesion gaining sovereignty and recognition. We have seen Bosnia, Montenegro, East Timor; all former Soviet Republics embraced and accepted by the international community. We now watch Kosovo and Western Sahara inching towards independence. Somalilanders know that we neither have the political clout nor the alliance of the willing to support our cause. We neither have oil to satiate Western hunger for fuel nor the correct creed to claim evangelical brotherhood.
However, like the hedgehog we know one big thing; that our determination, our strong will, our resilience and our enormous belief in the righteousness of our cause will bear fruit no matter how long we wait for it and no matter how much we suffer on the way. We have proven it in the past and we can continue to prove that we have the resolve and the persistence it needs to stay the course. No one can detract us, no one can pigeonhole us, and no one can sway us from our goal.
Despite the world’s indifference, our people have worked hard over the last 16 years. We held democratic local, parliamentary and presidential elections, we created a fabulous free press, we held terrorism at bay, we built our ruined homes, we established universities and erected some factories with our meager resources and remittances from our sons and daughters scattered all over the world. And with or without recognition we intend to continue our march. Our future plan is to develop our roads, our ports and airports, and our health and education systems. Let the Africans whine and whimper over opening Pandora boxes, let the Americans and Europeans indulge in their double standard business of lobbying independence for places like Kosovo and denying the same to Somaliland, let the Arabs wallow in their monkey business and Orwellian newspeak of confusion and self pity, Somaliland has no time to waste. Yes, we may be traveling alone but “The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, And we have promises to keep, And miles to go before we reap” with full apology to Robert Frost.
And reaping we did. As have gained friends along the way. We owe ample gratitude to a few courageous countries that judged us by our achievements and extended a hand of friendship to us. They shook our hands when all have deserted us; they opened representative offices for us when all have avoided us. We owe enormous gratitude to South Africa, Ethiopia, Ghana, Belgium and the UK. Their legacy will be written in gold in the annals of our history.

It is important to understand the current situation in a country which is destroyed by its people. the reason was the justice went on wrong hands and sysmtem become on man's property.
let the past be past, just think a simple thing that you can do about your country where you come from Somaliland or South Somalia like helping orphans, schools, water sanitation, cleaning, sponsoring student, then let us make non profit and political organization in order to help the children, woman and weak people who need most.
That could simple the people cause the problem is the people of the country not the country.
thanks

First you sound passionate about your will and dedication to bring UNited Somalia..for that im proud of you. But, to be real brother, i realy dont believe that will ever happen. We will never be united and that being for reason; Triblism. Unity is something Mr. Barre killed when he bombed the north and specially the Isaaq clan. Its true, we should forget the past, but our parents and elders and so called leaders will not. Truthfully, Somaliland leaders and elders have so much hate for our brothers and sisters in the south. However, same goess to the one in the south, they too have so much hate.
Im from somaliland but 90% of my friends are from the south and to tell you the truth i have no idea what tribe or clan is any of them. I really dont care, i know them as somalis and my people.
Let me give you a little story on how our elders think....
few months ago, i came back from the college i was attending and i met this old guy, who supposevely was related to me (clan)..he asked me "How many of our people go to school with you?" i replied "about 20 of us" He said "masha'allah, that is impresive".. i didnt realize his question until his daughter explained to me what he was asking. She said he means "our people, our clan.." and wallahi i started laughing and i said to him "Oh, Uncle, i have no idea what tribe any of them are, when i said 20 i meant 2o somalis." he smiled and i knew from his face that to him i was "doqon".
Anyways, my point is,it is best for our country to be divided into three different regions. Somaliland, Puntland, and Somalia. This will bring competition and each one will try to be better than others. And eventually, our young generation (me, you and my 90% non somalilandr) will figure it out that it is best if we unite.
BUT NO, DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT UNITY,,,,IT WILL NOT HAPPEN ANY TIME SOON BROTHER.
One Love.

Liban you said what is needed in Somalia, but have you searched to engage with young people from Somaliland who are bred in UK. I am sure you can build a network of understanding. What about dedicating a website for honest and serious discussion about aour futur. Believe you me if I was young and literate in internet, I would have developed a good number of decent websited that would lead to reopen our hearts.
Think about it and seek assistance from your age group. Youth is the future. Current leaders of Soamalia and Somaliland are parasites who could perish if a country of law and order is enacted. They survive in dirt and crime.

I was born and raised in the South (Xamar), but I was educated and now I'm based in UK. By trade I'm a investment banker who specialises in Macro Economics. My point of view on Somaliland is simple:
1. Size....size matters. Ethiopia is 70m odd, Nigeria is 150m & so forth. Europe is re-integrating and the world as a whole is trying to reduce barriars why erect one between Somaliland and Somali? Namely, violence. If only Somali can settle down, I am certain we would come to some agreement provide the leaders from both areas are pragmatic & sensible.
2. Wealth, Somali is not deviod of wealth. I this vary day don't understand why we are not exploiting our natural resources. Cement in Berbera, Uranium in Central Somali, Iron, Zinc etc etc.
3. Reconciliation, my father used to say if Nelson Mandela was a born a Somali he'd been killed by now. Somali particularly far to quick to resort to violence if things don't go their way. We've got change our approach from a Zero sum game to one were a single tide will raise all boats.
4. Returnee's, those like myself whom have made a good life for themselves may not want to return. However, Somaliland/Somali needs their skills. Therefore, we must offer them incentives to return and they must be allowed to keep their foreign nationality.
The above would be the behaviour one would expect from a rational people, but we all know our people are neither rational nor sensible.

Thank Karim, we build our peace by pure Somali tradition of saving the living and forgetting the dead. That is the Somali way of doing wrongs right. I am puzzled how our brothers in the South forget that basic tool of peace.
We ask no compensation. We cannot be bought, but we forgive. Don,t you know our President was head of NSS in Berbera district and assistant of Regional District Security Board, second to the butcher of Hargeysa Mr. Morgan. He participated every act executed by Morgan, and yet my people allowed him to be the President. We bought peace for forgiving.
I am ashamed that you think guilt, when I personally feel that we did dishonour to our Somalism. We where in peace for 16 years, and never attempted to come to your aid and help you restore peace and order. I feel we indirectly contributed to the death of innocent men and women in Mogadishu. We let Ethiopian heavy armament to land on our ports at no cost and to the Mogadihu for their onslaught.
Don,t feel guilty, but think me as a brother and let us bury the spears and hold hands to build a future where we can survive against the imperial expansion of Ethiopia. Separated we shall end up as OROMOS gave up their identity and religion a century ago.
Equally, I call for my Somalilanders, special those articulate intellectuals like my dear Bashir to think about the future. TO think like our ancestors: let the bygones be behind us. We cannot restore the past, but we can build the future. That is why Europe and west built their status in the world, and that is why Arabs are backward, for they always look behind and never forward.
If Ethiopia can be united with a century old continuous atrocities, if Afgans can remain united, and if Iraqis always think of united Iraq, why we Somalis a country with one single nationality cannor remain united. It is a simple question that will lead us to cry on each others shoulder.Think before you respond and hold your emotions. Be practical and courageous. Let us free our mind from the fear of tribal domination, where we cannot act alone, without getting the greenlight form corrupt, blood sucking tribal chiefs.

we people from South , dont hate Somaliland , I admire how those people progresed and we the people of Xamar stil fighting for 16 years , some of my family went to Somaliand to escape to Ethiopian and they amazed when they saw how Hargiesa so clean and prety , and Hotels and houses are nice . How they acheived that without help from United Nation or Arab League. We have to give them credeit . We the people of the South killed 78,000 people from the North , we are sorry for that , and please forgive us .
The somali goverment have to pay compansation for the people of Somaliand , and arrest those who kill thier people , then may be they will join us , as United Somalia

Thanks Bashir Goth,
Its pleasure to have noble citizens like you dear
Somaliland has population of 3.5 million and an area of 68,000 miles square. 34 Countries recongnized Somaliland after independence from British 26th June 1960. But unfortunately, Somalilanders tried to achieved impossible mission of uniting Somalis under one government. Today, Somalilanders and Somalis both understood that such theory failed.
On such context, Somaliland regained its independence from Somalia 18th May 1991. We have tested our brothers in Somalia but they dont understand the meaning of development.
Somaliland independence is wish of 3.5 million and nobody can decide destiny of these millions except through democratic election.
Somaliland will remain independent with or without wish of international community. This is our last word.
Thanks

A. Musa Thank you for youe analysis. It is said by many ministers including the highly respected Edna that the country budget is mostly paid to journalist and foreign dignituries to sell its name. Dr. Gees a long serving ex-ministers told in many places they even bribed foreign leaders.
I am told by friends of presidency that Bashir is one of the paid. To be frank I rather prefer Bashir to be paid than foreign journalists that write rubbish and who have no princible than filling their stomach. The fact is clear, why anyone with a decent inteligence ask to braek up a country that have no difference in colour, language, religion. Why nobody asks to braek Burundi and Rwanda, why not break up Afganistan, why not divide Iraq. After all the people of this countries are different in language and religion, and more masacre happened in them than in Somalia.
Why Ethiopis with its 35 nationalities are not breaken up. The Oromo and Somalis, and Afars in Ethiopis are fighting for their freedom and noone helps them to realise that.
I was one of those who were happy to see separate Somaliland, but what I see after 16 years tells me there is no light after the tunnel, but dark after dark. The country is falling in the hands of ex-junior Security Officers headed by the president, with no intention for a sustainable democracy, but rather to a solid, ruthless regime of one man rule. Even trade is going to be monopolised. See what happened to the livestock, where a one Saudi trader is given the sole export license of sheep, the major resource of our hard currency.
Ask the President what is his salary. Ask him where the duties on petrol goes, ask him why port charges, and airport tax are not include in national budget. Research and decide where we are heading to. Ask why Ethiopians use our port and airport without paying a cent.
Comparing USA with us is an insult to our brain. Though USA president nominates Judges, did he nominated men with no legal background whose sole education is up to high school. Did he appoint junior school leavers to the post of ministers. Did he appoint illeterate to be in charge of Legal Advisory of the Presidency.
To me if we can improve the quality of life of our people, it doesn,t matter if we reunite or stay separate, though a united Somalia is stronger and will stop obliteration of our national identity by Tigre and Amharas. Today our Radio Hargeisa broadcasts in Amharic and plays their songs, but rejects to play Somali songs by southern artists. That tells about our future.
If the information I have on Bashir is not accurate my apology, but I am dead sure there are many paid. One thing I admire about Bashir is his quality of writing and his unwavering belief of freedom of speech. I wish he will be on the side of united Somalia, where the existence of our Somali identity is.
I lost over 8 of my family in the atrocities committed against Hargeisa people, but my responsibility lies more on the living than the deadAnd I am driven by the future than the past. I see a dark cloud of injusties and crippling corruption that will lead us to more civil wars, more death and destruction. I hope I am wrong.

"Do you know Bashir Goth and so called Journalists are all paid and bribed."
Ahmed;
You took me back over almost forty years when I was in elementary school in Hargeisa in early 1960s.
I happen to be in a class of good students. Every year, at the end of yearly final exams ,the first five positions used to change hands. In another words, almost every year or every term, new student used to score the highest and take the first position. The one who was first may end up going 3 or 4. One from no where may end up being at the first position. That year I ended up being at the third position.
One of my teachers asked me," Did you lose ground this year what position did you get?"
Being full of myself grade three, I answered in Somalia," Aniga yaa meeshayda iga qaadi karaya?" "Who can push me out of one of the first five positions in any term?"
My teacher said to me to paraphrase him," Those who claim they know all and brag too much, God and people see them as fools who do know nothing and who are full of themselves."
I am using that anecdote or short story to ask you Ahmed," What are your sources? Where do you get all these information that no one else has? What proof or ducumentation do you have to show that Bashir Goth and other Journalists are bribed? How rich is Somaliland to have the highest paid president? Is the president of Somaliland the Sultan of Brunei, or Amir of Kuweit? Is the president of Somaliland's last name Alsaud? Or Al Sabah? Or Alnahyaan? Or Qaabus?
Few years ago, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, chaired by Senator Feingold, held hearing on Somalia. One of the Panalists whose name I do not remember now was employee of the non-profit organization CARE.He said," If one goes to Hargeisa, one may see an iliterate woman sitting in a open street, exchanging five or six different currencies. Another woman may sitting not far from her selling precious metals like gold. One may say a man pushing a wheelbarrow full of US dollars and no one no one dare to mug him/her. Anything like that does not happen in London, or Paris, or Rome or New York"
Ahmed has a point though. There is mismanagement and curruption in Somaliland as many parts of world.
Ahmed may not have been following the scandals that daily take place in the adnvaced countries as US, Italy, France, Great Britain, China. They claim supper powers but this big countries are immune from curruption and mismanagement.
Though the Senate consent Federal Judges are nominated in the United States of America by the President.
As the investigation going on by firing of Federal Attorneys demonstrates, there is rampant lack of justice everywhere.
In my humble opinion, as Bashir Goth articulated the world community have to reward with recognition and give access to financial institution to those poor governments that do not displace, miam, and kill thier own citizens.

i AM FROM Somaliland and above all I am Somali. Where you get the name Somalilander. A nation that have every human character in common: clour, language, religion, tribes and clans doesn,t need to be broken up inorder to satisfy a vulture elite that create triple number of Ministers. Do you know Somaliland cabinet is over 55 Ministers. Do you know our President is the most highly paid head of state, in a country of less than 2 millions with over 90 percent unemployed. Do you know we have elected Mayors who report to Governors appointed by the President. Do you know all Judges, Department heads, military officers, the police are appointed by the president.
Do you know you can be imprisoned without court indefinetely. And do you know President can pardon any criminal without reference. Do you the government revenue is kept in a safe in the Presidents bedroom.
Do you know there is no postal services, no banks, and the currency is printed at Presidents will.
We will be better off to share natural resources with our wealthiers brothers in the South. We shall be stronger in every sense.Long live Strong and united Somalia, where there will be no chance of uneducated junta that rules Somaliland under the guise of adulterated democracy, inorder to cheat world opinion.
