Amar C. Bakshi - The Arabic news network Al Jazeera just launched its English-language channel today. According to the station's Director General Wadah Khanfar, its goal is to "revolutionize TV news by giving voice to the oppressed South." This sounds ambitious. Will Al Jazeera English live up to it? The station is certainly not lacking in resources. Qatar's Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani has staffed it with 500 reporters spread across the world. They've managed to pull some big names from CNN, BBC, and even the U.S. Marines like Riz Khan, Sir David Frost, and Josh Rushing respectively.
Al Jazeera's bureaus in Washington DC, London, Kuala Lumpur, and Doha house over one hundred employees each and are immaculately designed. I visited their Doha headquarters two weeks ago exactly on the station's tenth anniversary. Though I was in the city for a United Nations conference on emerging democracies, the Al Jazeera compound was where all the action was.
In their main English language newsroom, a vast plasma image of the globe illuminated the anchor desks. Skinny silver computers stood perched on custom-curved desks. "We've spared no expense," exclaimed a young Egyptian employee, quoting the billionaire scientist from the movie Jurassic Park. He explained that Al Jazeera's "polish proves its professionalism." But then he quickly changed gears to stress that Al Jazeera would win world support only "by sounding truly different from our competitors like CNN and BBC."
Al Jazeera's consultant on Middle East affairs and new PostGlobal panelist Lamis Andoni outlined just what "different" meant:
Al Jazeera will cover the developing world; it will offer another view on the Israel-Palestine conflict. It will inject international discourse with the arguments of and the social and economic plights of the South to enable a real dialog.
With her voice rising, she gestured toward a huge photograph hanging on the newsroom wall of a young Al Jazeera cameraman picked up on the border of Afghanistan and imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay:
Al Jazeera's status was earned at a high price. Cameraman Sami al-Hajj is spending his fifth year in Guantanamo. Two of our journalists are killed -- one during the American bombing of Al Jazeera in Baghdad. Our top correspondent Tayser Allouny is under house arrest in Spain for unsubstantiated charges. These colleagues are an inspiration for the rest of us, a call to courage, and a constant reminder of the cost of telling the story.
She then swept her arm across the newsroom pointing to dozens of young faces scurrying in and out of the building. Many of these employees were British and Australian students fresh out of college, sweating in the hundred-degree Doha heat. According to Andoni, they too share her vision:
There are many young people who are coming on board, and many seeking to. They want to be part of a new, more inclusive, daring medium -- a medium that speaks truth to power.
But an hour's flight away in Dubai, another PostGlobal panelist, Bashir Goth expressed far less hope for Al Jazeera English. He thinks Al Jazeera inexcusably promoted Osama bin Laden for mutual benefit. Al Jazeera achieved substantial publicity by airing the terrorist's videos before anyone else could see them. Bin Laden, some scholars argue, would not have been a global celebrity without the TV platform Al Jazeera offered. By airing his clips, the Wall Street Journal argues that Al Jazeera became a "mouthpiece of Osama bin Laden," offering free publicity that helped him recruit more fighters. When I asked Director General Wadah Khanfar if Al Jazeera English would show more bin Laden tapes should they be released, he replied forcefully, "Yes, we will abide by the same editorial guidelines as our Arabic channel."
Though Al Jazeera launched today, it will be tough to find in the United States. Cable companies here worry that in the minds of Americans Al Jazeera is too closely associated with Al Qaeda for comfort. The station's presentation -- some would say selective presentation -- of atrocities in the Middle East, especially in Iraq, Palestine and most recently Lebanon, have inflamed anti-American sentiment.
On multiple occasions, officials within the Bush administration accused the station of willfully stirring hatred toward America. As Al Jazeera's introductory video boasts, Donald Rumsfeld called their broadcasts "vicious, inaccurate and inexcusable". Rumors circulate that America even considered it an outright military target after it bombed its offices in Kabul.
But beyond the simple accusation that Al Jazeera aids terror groups comes a more fundamental criticism. Is the station's articulated concern for "voices from the South," for the billions who don't watch TV but are affected by the global players who do, a genuine one or just more anti-West rhetoric? Will this station really open up new debates that are often overlooked like poor education, weak public health systems, or hunger? Or will Al Jazeera just add to the cacophony of angry voices and polarized discussions, perhaps even promoting violence in the process by providing a platform for an extreme few?

Al-Jazeera has now become Nr. 1 News Network in the world . Great success! Great success as Borat says. It has been considered as Nr. 1 strategic targets in the racist apartheid regime of Israel. Who is still wondering, among Americans and westerns in gerenal, why there is such a mess since a very long time in the middle east .. The answer is very easy - at least to me as a muslim arab - The muslim world still can´t accept the fact that Jews raped a whole muslim state for the reason : " our grand parents lived here 4000 years ago so go out from your homes or else ! " . Actually in history there wasn´t this " or else " .. Jews just got into the palestinian lands and committed real massacres that lead to millions of palestinian refugees in different arabic countries, who are still waiting until today to come back home. Actually I believe Jews won the WWII .. It was all secretly palanned and we can easily see the results of the exisitance of the state of Israel. Dont forget the guy who planned the occupation of Iraq and pushed to that direction since long years ago was the american-jew Paul Wolfwitz .. I think everybody here must know him .. And especially after gaining more fame when he got blow jobs for just US $ 196000 monthly .. Anyway .. that´s not the problem .. what I can say is that Jews were stupid to control history for their own agenda by relying on the idea : christians could occupy America long time ago so can we do with muslims. They just "forget" christian countries have suffered from long terms resistance on the ground because of their occupation to muslim lands in the past before WWII .. That explains why the legal resistance whether it is in Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan, wherever it is, is not covered as much as the illegal occupation in the western Media. That also explains why the Gaza strip controlled now by the popular Islamic Resistance group Hamas is isolated from the whole world .. Just because it says NO and 1000 NO to Israel. It is easy for the jewish state to order America and most EU countries ( some exceptions like Norwege , recently England and others ) to isolate the most popularly intense part of the world. I am one of those who still have too much hope that this racist apartheid regime in the middle east will finish forever one day soon through resistance ( and not terrorism ) as South Africa racist regime disappeared in the past .. Israel doesn´t look for peace, the recent history that has been transfered to the western public 180 ° the opposite , proves these words.. Arabic regimes ( although among them plenty of dictator leaders that just work as direct agents for Israel and USA.. Example : Jordanian King and his dead father.. ), so I was saying that there has been PLENTY of chances that grants peace in the middle east and Israel could choose one of them but it just refuses and gives stupid and illogical reasons .. Actually it´s for some people logic if we consider the real power mesures there .. Do we expect from a racist regime who got more than 200 nuclear bombs and still refuses to declare them, do we expect from it to accept peace ? I believe when the western public start to believe that who uses modern technologies in army , tanks , F-16's , illegal weapons is the terrorist and who just throws some self home made missiles and stones on Tanks is defending his own land for real freedom, is a real man and defender .. At this level the world would be a better place to live in .

Well Al-Jazeera English is really revolutionary. It made the headlines in other news broadcaster within 2days of launch.Mr Tony Blair made one of his brave moves to get interviewed by Sir David Frost from Al-Jazeera and he blantently admitted that Iraq was a disaster and Number 10 got up and said it was 'slip of the tongou' Well maybe Tony forgot that Sir David Frost was not working for BBC where a 'slip of the tounge' will be on the deleted scenes never realeased. I think there is alot of crap that comes on the media, so whats the big deal of another coming to air. Anyway, we need alot more news channels to be broadcast, rather than having American controlled news. We need a variety of independent views and we need to hear what people say. In North America we hear and see only what the networks feel is good for us (and them). I want to know how the "other side" sees the world. Aren't their perceptions as valid to them as ours are to us? How can we bridge any gap unless we each try to understand what it is like to walk the others' shoes?

CNN's coverage of the Middle East (including Iraq) is mediocre at best. Most of their reporters don't even speak Arabic let alone the local Arabic flavor spoken in each Arab country or region. On top of this, there is the usual pro-Israel bias, war cheering, etc.
Few days ago, CNN's Beck asked the first-ever elected Muslim congressman "Prove to me that you are not working with our enemies".
Even the prestigious New York Times still doesn't realize that Iranians aren't Arabs. Every now and then they confuse the two. But who cares right?
Al-Jazeera will present an Arab perspective on ARAB AFFAIRS and will put an end to CNN's hegemony over Middle Eastern news in the world.
Now non-Arabs who are interested in Middle Eastern Arab news will first go to Al-Jazeera.
If they want to watch US news, well they can switch to CNN. They do a pretty good job covering it.
The world must know what the US government does outside of its borders. The people who get a taste of US bombs have every right to tell their story to their world.
Al-Jazeera always welcomes US officials to offer their apologist bs on its programs. It is up to the viewer to decide.

Actually, I think what gets conveyed by the US media is that the reason Arabs and Israelis are dying is because they really just don't like each other. Why is that? Who really knows? But more importantly, does it really matter to me, an American? There are people all over the world that have differences with others. To think that the American public needs to or wants to understand all the nuances of all of these disagreements is ludicrous.
Now one could argue that force-feeding the US an Arab heavy biased version of the news will wind its way into the US relationship with Israel and thus get a "balanced" foreign policy. OK. But its the Israeli and Arab public (those that hate each other) that need to be enlightened with this information. As we are told time and time again by pretty much everyone in the world, the US is not the global policeman. The more US politicians think they know about things, the more willing they will be to try to fix things. For the sake of everyone involved, please keep them in the dark. Just say no to Al Jazeera!

How to watch Al Jazeera English? With the TV OFF. If somehow i find the need to have some news organization tell me that the root of all problems in the world are because of Israel and the US, I can listen to NPR or flip on CNN. Do they have a right to broadcast in the US? Absolutely! Should my cable station pick them up? Only if they can do with out my business. You really should not need to watch them to hear more reasons to hate America. There is plenty of that in the media already. I think that the writer did a fair job balancing the view of Lamis Andoni with the views of others like Bashir Goth. The tendentious and hypocritical slant of this article is a perfect example why so many people around the world find mainstream US news analysis and punditry disgusting in its ignorance and hypopcrisy. The writer parrots the ludicrous nonsense that Jazeera "promoted" bin laden and that the network is the "bin laden" network. Jazeera did absolutely NOTHING wrong in broadcasting bin laden's messages -- the network did exactly what a credible news outlet is supposed to do by broadcasting those videos. For the record, the US government funds 2 news media outlets broadcasting in Arabic in the entire Arab world.
FY 2005 budget for the 2 outlets: $71 million.
1-) Al-Hurra Satellite TV: Al-Hurra literally means "The Free one" in Arabic. The name was chosen to ridicule Al-Jazeera and of course to insult us Arabs who chose to watch the "non-Free one". You know, we Arabs are backward people...we need guidance from Washington.
2-) Radio Sawa. Unlike Al-Hurra which is a news outlet, Radio Sawa plays a lot of music (both Arab and western) to get people to listen to its "positive looking" news on Iraq and other conflicts.
Radio Sawa broadcasts its propaganda on FM and has installed many transmitters in many major Arab cities.
The stated goal of these 2 outlets can be found in the governing entity performance report:

I would absolutely watch Al Jazeera English. After seeing the documentary "Control Room" about Al Jazeera's coverage of the Iraq war, I came to the conclusion that their coverage was the most comprehensive and unbiased of the major media outlets.
If Americans are afraid to view a more unvarnished portrayal of our actions and policy in the Middle East, then they should turn on Fox news and let the rest of us get our news from the greatest variety of media sources as possible.

Remember that Al-Jazeera as an Arab News outlet is only trying to beam Arab news from an Arab perspective.
Where else would one could get news about Arab affairs if not from an Arab outlet itself?
Why can't we Arabs tell our own news??
When I want to read about French affairs, I watch/read French media.
When I want to read about US affairs (internal), I watch/read US media.
US melding in Arab affairs is no longer an internal US issue, it is an Arab issue....and that's where Al-Jazeera comes in.
If the US government and Al-Jazeera bashers in the US do not want to see "negative coverage" of US policies, then they should stop bombing, invading, and killing our people.
Al-Jazeera did not invade Iraq, nor did it encourage 9-11 attacks the way many US media outlets (including the Washington Post) encouraged the invasion of Iraq.
In the mean tine, Al-Jazeera must continue to show the cost of this war of choice uncensored. Yes, uncensored.
The English version should carry on the same message so the world knows what goes in our lands.

I signed up to it as soon as i found out its available on www.vdc.com and www.jumptv.com and a couple of other online channel services. I watched for a while today and i have to say i am impressed! they obvioiusly are going to be a news media force to be reckoned with. As for no major US cable or satellite channels carrying it - hello? is anyone surprised? This is a slap in the face for a country that constantly preaches "democracy" and my favorite, "freedom of speech", and honestly, shows that those are well abused phrases to sell the "enlightenment" of this country to the ignorant person on the street. Anyone with just half a brain cell should be able to tell that American news channels are Biased with a CAPITAL B and directly contribute to the ignorance of this nation in general - and I am not evern talking about local "news" - though i do admire the cat that got stuck in the tree in your local town that made "world" news that evening! I watch CNN, MSNBC and particularly FOX for the comedic entertainment value of their programs. These channels have been assuming for a long time that the citizens of the world are as ignorant and downright stupid as they are. Bravo Al Jazeera! It's biased. It's sensational. It's Fox News on steroids. Al Jazeera's news coverage offers raw reporting with a thematic veil that sometimes borders absurdity.
But Al Jazeera's coverage of bloodied civilians and mangled corpses in Iraq, Lebanon, and the Palestinian territories offers viewers a stark but real glimpse of war and its consequences - glimpses that Western media often shy away from.
If its English-language counterpart is anything like the original Arabic version, then I believe Al Jazeera's reporting style will help paint a more human and endearing picture of this conflict-prone region for Western audiences.

I called my local cable company to DEMAND that this channel be carried ASAP. No wonder Time Warner cable in NY declined nationwide coverage, they OWN CNN! Big surprise there.

I've been watching it since it started at 1200 GMT yesterday. What can i say .. DR Congo, Darfur, Iraq, Iran, Zimbabwe, Thailand, Taiwan, Brazil, Palestine, etc. - most unreported stories in the western media, all in the last 24 hours! Al-Jazeera rocks !!

I have contacted Comcast & RCN, which are the providers in my area, and requested that they add Al-Jazeera and BBC World to their lineup. The more such requests they receive the likelier they will be to carry the channel.
TV and Cable news in the US is woefully inadequate when it comes to international news and perspectives, which keeps us behind the globalized times that we live in.

I definitely will watch it. I personally don't understand how anyone can take American corporate media seriously. People, wake up. All American media present only the view of big corporations, official White house and gang of neocon extremists. Personaly, I'm sick of all this government-neocon propaganda about Bush's dirty war in Iraq. Plus their endless wild attacks on President Putin and shameful silence on many 9/11 oddities(instead of serious investigation American media simply accepted official White house conspiracy theory). All this really creates a need for some other, non-American and non-British, English-language TV channel.

I will definitely watch it being banned in 18 countries, including four Arabic countries, I think their programming is not censored or worried to tell the truth and offend some of the Governments.

TV news has become a source of entertainment for millions - " a forum for the ignorant." I don't watch it anymore. I think many would be better off if they got back to reading periodicals where there is a better standard of due diligence in certifying leads because it isn't an "exclusive" or a "scoop" that only begins a meaningless quarrel about the "truth" that saps any energy for actually solving problems. If you read you get background and perspective. You have to actually think for yourself. How do most TV news shows promoting outrage benefit anyone? What is learned except we may enjoy being angry (like a tonic)? I read that once you get to the point of argument, the time for changing anyone's mind has long since passed. Why continue to escalate the antagonism? Time to end the TV news arms race.

What could anyone be afraid of? Another person's opinion? I want to be broadly informed, and that means hearing all sides of an issue. In addition to which I've read Al Jazeera on the net and while they have their own perspective like anyone else I don't find them particularly biased. Even if I did, "I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

this is sad... al jazeera is one of the best news stations out there. i am sick of hearing how the arab & muslim nations are always trying to start a fight and nations like USA and Iraels are justified in fighting them. Must I say more than Lebanon & Israel. SO it will be good to have station that reports the facts, however, it will not be in here in the USA, so ill have to find a way to get it

Al Jazeera has not just been accused of being Bin Laden's mouthpiece, but also of being agents of Mossad, as well as being puppets of Isreal and the US. It can't even advertise in Saudi Arabia.
Al Jazeera doesn't take its' marching orders from anyone. Sure, there won't be an expose' on the Qatari Emir, but Fox News isn't going to do one on Rupert Murdoch either. The mass consumption of Al Jazeera news would be a much better diet than the mass consumption of cheap Chinese imports.
Yes, I'm going to watch it, on IPTV. If you're against Al Jazeera broadcasting, there's only one way to stop it, stop buying gasoline. Sheikh Hamad uses oil revenue to fund the station, for now.

I'll watch. I've been using English.Aljazeera.net as a resource since before the Bush overthrow of the Iraqi government. They are no more biased than American media, and far less biased than most. Al Jazeera's coverage of the lead up to the Iraq war was both truthful, and unsparing. They pursued every lead, and exposed every contradiction, that most of the American media willfully concealed.
On the most critical issues of the day, Al Jazeera has been far out in front of most of the choices available to me.

Of course I will watch, if given the chance here in the states. In fact I would pay extra to get cable companies to broadcast the channel. If I find it to be an extreme outlet for undesireables like Fox news is for the Neocons than certainly I will have no problem shunning it also. The channel needs to be given a chance and I think, in time, it will be.

As for all the complaints that 'free speech' is being censored - please grow up. Al Jazeera is free to speak, and I am free not to give a rats ass about them or their corporation. Cable companies do not have to take on channels - especially if they feel they will lose customers. Free speech ensures that points can be made (with given limitations - such as incitement to violence, which Al Jazeera borders on anyways), but NO ONE is obligated to give them a platform.

I had a hard time relying on American Media about the news on Middle East.
Good example - 600,000 people killed in Iraq claimed by CNN although True have not been broadcast until late for political reasons. Why the same message have not been published when 100,000 later 200,000 later 300,000 later 400,000 died.
There is more credibility in Al Jazeera's news than CNN which is known to the people from those region and other developed countries.

I think that it is VERY positive to have this voice available to the international community in general, and the U.S. public specifically. Over the last six years, the U.S. media has been far to soft on the U.S. governement to the detriment of the country and to the world at large. Any alternative voices are positive - not that they will be less biased, but because they force people to analize what is truth for themselves.

What is the administration scared of ? Are they worried about the American people finding out that they've been fed lies by their president and his entourage ? Well, they should be scared because they cannot stop the truth, or at least the other side of the story from being told, through Al Jazeera or through other means. The American people want to know the truth and what's really going on in Iraq, Israel, palestine, Lebanon, and the rest of the world. So far, they were allowed to hear the administration's perspective only. The American people are not as dumb as Bush thinks they are. They were duped for a while, and now, the sleeping giant just woke up as the elections have demonstrated.

I think that I would watch it initially as a curiosity and continue to watch it if I thought their views were balanced and well researched. It would not matter what THEY said their agenda was, I would be the judge of that.

And now that AlJazeera English(AJE) is coming out in a big way to challenge this mind control, they are fighting tooth and nail so we the people don't watch this "other perspective" of the world view.

As someone who grew up in the Middle East, I won't watch it. The reason is because the network is financed by an undemocratic sheikh that supports the insurgents in Iraq and is anti-western values of freedom and equality. I also won't watch it because the channel is already filled with anti-US propaganda that fuels violence and helps recruit for terrorist organizations. I will only wacth it when it denounces violence, terrorism, and stops the anti-US biased coverage of the war in Iraq.

It's about time that Americans have access to Middle Eastern views that are not filtered through an unstinting support for Zionism and dispossession of the Palestinian people, most often at the point of a gun or tank or Israeli missile. There can be no peace in the Middle East until there is justice for the Palestinians. Although I don't know how you redress having unilaterally given away more than half their land to European Jewish immigrants and then stood by silently while those same immigrants and their descendants stole most of the rest of it, killing indiscriminantly as they went.
if the UN had done to us what it did to the Palestinians, every American would be fighting back against that injustice with every weapon we had or could cobble together.

Watched clip: Summary: War footage, violence, Gaza Strip, Darfur, Tehran, Zimbabwe, Brazil (suicides), Congo (election-civil war?), Somalia, Iraq (bury victims of sectarian violence, Tsunami in Japan. Al-J gives the premise that "intolerance and conflicts" happen because people cannot understand each other. And they Al-J will bridge the gap. They want to set the news agenda. Close with a picture of a young arab boy holding a semi-automatic rifle.
My thoughts: if this overview is a taste of their reporting to follow, I seriously doubt I will be watching them. Are there no good stories in the world today? No uplifting themes? Also, I take issue with the concept that a news channel "sets the agenda"; I thought they were suppose to report the facts regardless of their own prejudices? Finally, there naivete concerning what causes intolerance and conflicts makes no sense whatsoever. If violence, etc..was due to simply not understanding one another, as Al-J states, then one would think that our own time would be more peaceful than any other time in the history of the world. For we have access to the world, and anywhere in the world, by simply getting on the internet. Yet with all of our technological communication advances the world has become a more dangerous place. No I'm sorry Al-J, intolerance and conflicts are not a result of misunderstandings between people, cultures, etc..the problem lies a lot closer to that, and is inside each one of us...
