Look Beyond Failed Formulas

New Delhi, India - My first suggestion is do not travel without a destination. At the moment, the U.S. Secretary of State's journeys are more in the spirit of Marco Polo or Ibn Batuta: We shall find what we can when we reach.

You do not need to leave Washington for the facts. Israel is destroying a nation in search of an elusive if not invisible enemy. I don't know how smart the America-fed bombs are if each one dropped in Halba, Tripoli, Batroun, Hasbaiya or Bint Jbeil, from north to south, brings Hezbollah and Hamas closer to the hearts of the next generation of fighters.

Hezbollah did not exist before a previous Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. We might not have to wait till 2030 to discover the consequences of 2006. Nor is it wise to travel in order to buy time. You can vanquish the armies of governments in six days, but it is quite another matter to subjugate a street that refuses to accept defeat.

Second, she must realize that a closed mind cannot open new doors. Ms. Rice's principal responsibility is the protection of American interests. She does her nation a disservice by denyng the existence of new realities born of pain, anger and the stagnation of septic crises. She needs to move beyond the faithful in the Arab world (and even their faith is in doldrums; check out Cairo) and step out of the comfort zone of failed formulas. All the old cliches now lie buried under the bombs of Lebanon. And if she does not have a new idea, she might want to curl up with a good book in Washington. Why travel at all?

To M.J. Akbar,

I agree completely that new ideas and methods must be tried. Also, how much of a credibility gap, real or perceived, does the Bush Administration have and how problematic will this be going forward?

AJ Rao:

MJ Akbar has it right on the Israel-Lebanon war but he has deliberately chosen to ignore that Muslims, wherever they are, and in particular when they are in the majority, subjugate other religions (Jews, Hindus, Christians) and that is the problem, world-wide today, in some shape or form, if we digress for a moment. In India Muslims have become Presidents, sports heroes and the like, since the great Hindu religion is openly tolerant. Can someone give me one simple example of Muslim tolerance, magnanimity ? Anyone ?

Aj Rao:

"Muslims, wherever they are, and in particular when they are in the majority, subjugate other religions (Jews, Hindus, Christians) and that is the problem, world-wide today, in some shape or form"

I have to disagree with your premise that it is Islam or Muslims that are cause of the majority of the conflicts in the world today. While it is true that Middle East tends to be in the news more often than any other region, which is because of its strategic value to almost the entire world, if you were to place conflicts in an order where loss of life was the determining factor then Africa would take the top five spots with millions killed in genocides and by starvation. Pakistan and India end up grabbing headlines due to the sheer magnitude of the catastrophe that would follow a war between to nuclear countries.

Since we are digressing, the apartheid in South Africa was the work of Christians and whites (European immigrants, colonists and their descendents). The holocaust was perpetrated by European Christians, Stalin had his Gulags, the Khmer Rouge regime committed large scale atrocities. If you want to come to the present you have the Lords Resistance Army in Uganda, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, and take a look at some of the South American States. It is not Muslims who are committing those atrocities. You are falling prey to the same fallacy that the preachers of hate in any religion (or ideology) advocate; that the other side (any other religion, movement, ideology etc) is inferior and in the wrong. Rather than branding "Muslims" or "Islam" as the culprit, I would suggest trying to study each conflict with respect to the unique dynamics that influence it.

That said, there is a certain "Muslim brotherhood" factor that does exist in the majority of the Islamic world. This "bond" seems to come to the surface more often than not in times of adversity and seems, to me at least, to have its strongest manifestation in societies that tend to be economically recessive or stagnant.

"In India Muslims have become Presidents, sports heroes and the like,"

India with its 140 million plus Muslim population and significantly large Christian minority, has its own socio-political dynamics, as does almost every Muslim, Christian, or other nation.

Mr Roa, please visit UAE. Most of the high jobs in the oil companies and businesses are owned by the Hindus. I am an Indian Muslim. When I applied for a job as a teacher in one of the private schools in India, I was told by the school Principal that they do not accept muslims. Do you call this tolerance and magnanimity?

channing:

"Failed formulas" is the only thing Rice can offer due to the fact that she is no more than a mouth-piece for the merciless neocon military-oil-industrial conquest. She has not offered one solution to any crisis, but instead, serves faithfully the "Project for a New American Century" plan and its constituency who placed her in this strategic position.

Peace in the middle east would most likely require the withdrawel of the bulk of American military presence and leave a whole lot of billionaires in this country searching for substitute plunder.

The middle east is vulnerable and fractious, lacking the relative cohesion of China or India. How could American industrialists find their next fortune in the absence of so much "opportunity". (Note where the hudreds of millions of dollars invested to keep this administration in power has come from)

The religious issues are no more than reverse-diplomacy aimed squarely at keeping the radical christian base squarely behind this wreckless adventure; us verses them = good verses evil.

There is little the international community can do about it unfortunately until the people in THIS country restore honest, transparent democracy here... however we can't even get our voting machines to work honestly, so it's a very uphill battle we all face

MarchDancer:

I can not preceive of any guiltless countrys' leaders in this ongoing battle in the mideast. However, the U.S. has created in six years a world without peace by charging in where it was not wanted, where it did not need to be, and where it had to falsify information in order to justify its presence. And now the U.S. is supporting without qualification or thought the total annihilation of Lebanon, refusing to enter into true peace negotiations. To quote Bush, "I'm content...".

I fear that Condeleeza Rice is in 'way over her head in the diplomacy needed in the mideast. She is merely a spokesperson, of course, for those in the Bush administration, and they know not what they do nor what they have done.

Narasimha Reddy:

To Mr. M.J. Akbar; Until 911 happened, even though I am from Telangana area and had Muslim friends, I was toltally ignorant of Islam. After 911, I didn't think outside people were resposible for 911. I thought it was an inside job by some disgruntled Americans. After it became clear that Osama Bin Laden and his gang were responsible, I wanted to know what made them do it. I wanted to know the boigraphy of the man who started Islam. So I got a book written by Karen Armstrong and read it. In it Iread " Muhammed executed 700 Jewish men, one woman, sold their women and children into slavery and pocketed the money. Then he ordered army of Muslims to raid other territories not under his control, loot their propery, kill if they resist, convert by force into Islam, accepted a concubine and fathered a child at 60 years of age and already having nine wives." Muhammed had his adopted son divorce his wife and then married her. This is the Prophet Muslims consider as their ideal man. This man claimed he received messages from Allah. All Muslims believe it to be true.

After reading this book I understood why Muslims act they way do. Osama is no worse than Muhammad. I don't know hwat will happen to India and the world. Islam partitioned India and was responsible for all that followed during partition. Democracy and Islam can't coexist. One or the other has to be eliminated. A Muslim will be killed if he/she renounces his religion. A muslim has no freedom and is brain washed into believing some horrible untruths.

Mr. Akbar I know you are a very very good man. Do you think Muhammed received messages from God? Today if any one did what he did that person will be executed.

Beesyna:

Mr. Reddy,

I appreciate the fact that you tried to educate yourself by reading about Islam after 9/11. I know many non-Muslims and Muslims, for that matter who decided to read up on Islam after 9/11. I would like to recommend that you not only read more about Islam, but reflect on different perspectives of Islam. Being a practicing Muslim, I would never base my opinion on an entire religion off of ONE book.

I would just like to point out that you may have simply skipped over what Mrs. Armstrong very clearly stated in her book: "Islam is a universal religion and there is nothing aggressively oriental or anti-Western about it. Indeed, when Muslims first encountered the colonial West during the 18th century, many were impressed by its modern civilization and tried to emulate it."

She further notes: "During a study of the Crusades and the current conflict in the Middle East, I was led to the life of Muhammad and to the Quran. . .In all great religions, seers and prophets have conceived strikingly similar visions of a transcendent and ultimate reality...The monotheistic faiths, however, call this transcendence 'God.' I believe that Muhammad had such an experience and made a distinctive and valuable contribution to the spiritual experience of humanity."

Please do not make hurtful generalizations and judgments about any religion, and please continue to read more about Islam.

An example of how people are trying to get along in India:

Zai:

Mr Aj Rao

The fact that India is a hindu majority after 800 years of Muslim rule is a evidence to the muslim magnanimity. I would look around US to see if you find a Native American majority after 300 years of American rule

Sami:

History will hold USA responsible for the destruction and murder of Lebanese people.

N. Reddy:

Mr. Akbar;

You wrote addressing AJ Rao; "The fact that India is a hindu majority after 800 years of Muslim rule is a evidence to the muslim magnanimity. I would look around US to see if you find a Native American majority after 300 years of American rule."

India remained a Hindu majority country not due to muslim magnanimity but inspite of brutality of Muslim rule. Hindus were too many, Hindu religion was too advanced. Islam looked to Hindus as a crood form of religion. Not many wood have accepted Islam in India without the sword of Islam. Islam could not have ruled India for long without some compromises made to Hindus. I have read several books by Karen Armstrong on Islam, it's history, and her books on religion in general. I also read

1. Why I am not a Muslim by Ibn Warraq. He renounced Islam. He had to change his name and live in USA in secrecy. Muslim religion doesn't allow leaving Islam. So you have no freedom in Islam.

2. I also read two book by V.S.Naipal which gave lot of insight into Islam.
3. Satanic verses by Rushdie. I asked a Muslim professor in a seminor why did they want to kill Rushdie. He said "because he left Islam. If one leaves Islam, punishment is death." So Muslims don't leave Islam out of fear.
4. I read about Buddha, Zesus, Confusius, Zoraster and other religious leaders. No one was violent except Muhammad, Abraham and Moses.

Middle East violence is due to Judaism and Islam. Both are violent religions. Jews have evolved, but Muslims didn't. Only in India they seem to be evolving. It is due to their neibors who are Hindus. There are many faults in Hindu religion, but they are tolerant of other faiths.

I have not met a bad Indian Muslim. I know there are Indian Muslims who joined Jihad against India. I came to know there are two different Muhammads. When Muhammad had no power and few followers he tought good things. That was when he lived in Macca.
When he moved to madina, he started looting. After he conquered Macca, he became very violent. I often wondered why Muslims I come accross are good. The answer lies in the quran written while Muhammad was living in Macca. Indian Muslims may bereding what was written in Macca.

I am a secularist and a Hindu by birth only. A Hindu, Christian, Jew, Buddhist or follower of any religion can leave his/her religion without fear of death. Only a Muslim can't. How can any civilized person accept such a religion?

Reddy

Gautam:

It is a nice article. Sometimes we forget that the means are as important as the end itself. We can not defeat the violence through violence. It meerly comes back more strong next time. Always annihilation is not the begining of creation, particularly not when it kills innocent civilians in the name of protecting them. More the path of containment, incrementalism, trust-building has been proved to save precious human lives in the past and was most effective to bring down the iron curtain which would not have been brought down through all nuclear Bombs the we had.

Arun:

Zai, the history of Hindu resistance is buried and forgotten - which in a way is a good thing. Dwelling in the past imprisons one in the past. I do not think we want to fight those battles again. Muslims need to reevaluate their history, too, and then move beyond it.

u2scoop1:

There is a very real perception I have that Secretary Rice represents Israel's interests rather than Americas. Or, perhaps the American government can't figure out how to formulate a policy for itself, but simply sees itself as following the lead of Israel. Either way, when Rice comes to the table saying: Hizbullah must not only cease fighting, but disarm; Hamas must stop attacking Israel; the Lebanese Army must enter the hot zone and put itself in a blocking position between Israel and Hizbullah; we will not talk to Syria; we will not talk to Iran; we will not talk to Hamas; we will not talk to Hizbullah ... she presents herself as a goofball who is high on something.
The realities are:
1. Hizbullah represents a growing minority of Shi'a Muslims inside Lebanon. Lebanon will soon see a Shi'a majority. Who represents them if not Hizbullah?
2. The Bush Administration weakened the Syrian hold on Lebanon. In the interim from when Israel backed out of Lebanon, until a month ago, Syrian presence had served to balance the tensions in Lebanon. An American engineered "Cedar Revolution" detabilized Lebanon. As far as I can tell, the official report on Hariri's death is still problematic.
3. In all this, the U.S. refused to speak to Syria.
4. NOT speaking to Iran has gotten the U.S. increased tensions with Iran.
5. The U.S. touted a free election in the Palestinian Territories. Hamas won, based on utter frustration and disgust with a corrupt PLA/Fatah, and a recognition that Hamas had a social services program akin to Hizbullah's.
6. When Hamas won, the U.S. determined to punish any nation which provided financial aid to Hamas.
7. Rather than initiating some innovative actions to bolster Abu Massen, the U.S. just attacked Hamas. In the end, the U.S. simply took it's bat and ball and walked home.
8. The Lebanese Army has been, and continues to be, fractionalized by sectarian and ethnic interests. It will not, in the near term, be able to do anything to separate Hizbullah and Israel.
9. The equations have changed so far as an invincible Israel.
The intense fighting ability of various forms of insurgency in Iraq has motivated MILLIONS of young Arab males to fight back ... against Israel and the U.S. They now KNOW that by engaging both Americans and Israelis in cities and towns of the densely populated Middle East, they can neutralize superior fire power.
The U.S. prefers, sensibly, to NOT lay waste to urban areas with it's massive fire power. Israel, stupidly, could care less and destroys Lebanon.
10. The motivation to fight and die against Americans and Israelis is gaining momentum. If some action is triggered againste Iran or Syria by Israel, the entire Hub of Islam will explode.
11. The U.S. needs to disengage from Iraq. It no longer has a robust conventional military capable of a three front war -- Afghanistan; Iraq; some of the Persian Gulf waters or a border fight against Iranians.
12. The Reagan Plan that was proposed during his tenure, to bring about some parity to the entire Israeli-Palestinian problem should be resurrected. It was the fairest proposal to date. The sense of hopelessness that Arabs and Palestinians in particular feel is borne from the overwhelming tilt towards Israel. When 6 million Israelis matter more than a quarter million Arabs and Muslims, what other conclusions can be drawn?
13. Europeans should be shown that if they provide forces, they suddenly gain enormous influence in the outcome. By supplying forces to a peace keeping intervention force, they suddenly have a significant voice at the table.
14. Since it is clear that neither Israel nor the United States President, Vice President, Secretary of State or Defense Secretary values Arab or Muslim lives as much as American or Israeli lives, each oil producing country should assess $1,000 per person killed in West Bank and Gaza, and Lebanon, per barrel of oil, on their price, or, alternatively, withdraw one barrel of oil per person from daily production. If each Arab oil producing state did this, the cost of oil per barrel would suddenly rise to a place where a more correct "value" could be placed on the lives of Arabs and Muslims. The West, I believe, would suddenly feel their error, and begin to place more value on Arab and Muslim lives. It's clear that by NOT supporting an immediate cease fire, the U.S. does NOT value Arab & Muslims lives as much as American, Christian, Jewish and Israeli lives. It's very clear and very simple. Just meditate on the reality a bit, and you'll see!
15. The Arab world must stomp on extremists, and their effort to place a new "value" on the lives of Arabs and Muslims killed by Israeli aggression, should be sobering to all. It will take away some of the thunder of the extremists, since all money gained in that manner should be set aside for massive rebuilding of Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza. Arabs should eschew American assistance. Americans allowed it to happen ... screw them!

sami:

Mr Reddy : please.
Can you explain how the Bhuddist's were wiped out in India. Remember relics of Bhuddha can be found all over India including present day Pakistan. It was the state religion of India during the time of Ashoka the Great.
(It is said he converted to Buddism, appaled after his massacre of 100,000 in the battle of Kalinga).
Lesss than 1% Buddists survived in the mainland India. But they flourished in every direction when they ran away south to Sri Lanka and east to Burma and north in Tibet and west to Afghanistan for many many centuries (remember the Bamiyan statue of Lord Buddha). Are you kidding about India as a tolerant society ? What about the Gujrat riots(against muslims)and Delhi riots(against Sikhs). Riots against minorities take place on a regular basis.
You have millions and millions of people you regard as "untouchables" even in this day and age.
The truth is no one nation or country I know is truly tolerant. There may be one or two examples here and there as is natural exceptions. Bring me an example to match Mohammad's conquest of Mecca or Omar the Great and Saladin's conquest of Jerusalem.

I don't recall Karen Armstrong wrote this. She didn't blame Muhammad for his inhuman actions. Infact she came up with one excuse oafter another. But she an exnun, ex Christian who left her faith because she coudn't believe inthe resurrection of Christ. She didn't want to offend Muslims. She needed them at that time. But if one reads her biography the prophet, one can see what kind of a person Muhammad was. I hope all my Muslim brothers and sisters in Indian subcontinent will have the opportunity to read this book when they are middle or highschool. Aslo I hope some day they will look into their own hindu ancestry and find out their roots and under what circumstances their ancesters were forced into Islam.

Mr. Sami;

Buddhists were not driven out from India by Hindus. Buddha is worshipped by Hindus as ninth incarnations of lord Vishnu. Hindus adopted some of Buddha's teachings. They became vegitarians and stopped sacrificing animals to Gods nad Godesses. Unfortunately, Buddha's teachings against idol worship and caste system they didn't follow. Buddhist monks were massacured during Islamic invasions. Buddhists were converted to Islam by the sword of Islam. When Islam invaded Bihar, most people of that area were Buddhist. They had a great university to which came people from all over the world came to learn Buddhism. They had great library at Nalanda Univerty. Islamic people destroyed the library, killed enmasse all the monks converted by force all the Buddhists. Today some of the dicendents of them live in Karachi, Pakistan. They left Bihar on their own. They don't know their history.

Untouchability is a curse. So was Sati sahagamanum. So is caste system. But today, untoughability is agaianst the law and is punishable. Riots against sikhs, Muslims and Chritians happened. But most people in India condemned them, didn't keep silent and celebrated in the streets. Remember 911. Muslims all over the world celebated on the strees, i'e in Palastene, Pakistan, Afganitan and othe Muslim countries.

In India like in America and the western Europe, people some times do bad things. But law of the land prosecutes them. Because, they are democratic counties. Hinduism is no longer defending caste system, Sati, untouchabilty. They are considered bad past habits.

Hope you will read about what Mulims did to the world. They destroyed thousands of temples all over the world. They destoyed Krishna temple in Madhura, Rama temple in Ayodhya, Shiva temple in Kashi, Somanath Temple in Gujarat. They looted the wealth from all those temples, killed people. They built Mosque in Isreal where there was a Jewish temple before. They destroyed many churches and built Mosques over them.

History of Islam is hitory of violence. No othe religion imposed double taxation on other faiths except Islam.

Read history, learn the truth.

Mushtaque Rahamat:

First of all let me thanks all those who particpated in this discussion and put forward their views candidly. I can only make following remarks:-

1-First of all no religion teaches violence and hatred. This is true for all religion and faiths.
2- if there is such faith then that can not be called religion.
3- Purpose of all relgions have, since time immemorail, to spread love and peace.
4- there must not be any generlaization of any reliogion and their people.
5- in most cases fight in the name of religion have been, in fact, fight for the material resources or political sway.
6- to comment and brandise any religion and community based on the knowledge ( not the primary resources) is a foolish act.
7- now coming to present crisis of Israe and Lebanon or if extend our horizon whole of Middle East, the reasons are following:-
a) this region has largest oil reserve hencce there is fight to control that.
b) by chance this region is predominantly muslim and the actors who are abetting fight are not professing the same faith. Therefore all problems are dubbed as Muslim vs ..... I am sure if the people of this region had followed other faith, scenario could have been different.
c) oppressed jews from Europe were forcibly popultated there by land grabbing and forced eviction. Hence there is fight.
d)Most of the middle eastern countries does not have representative goverments, which has been supported and proctected by the same people who are indrectly abetting wars and troubles.
e) Last but not the least, to know more about Prophet Mohammad( pbuh) please read more from the primary resources, instead relying on one soruce.
f) always remember renegade of one faith does not give lincese to pass judgment.
g) lastly we all are human, live in peace and let others live in peace as well. After all we are mortal being.

Jews are evolved into people who can destroy another country called lebanon. So evolved with their US Christian master that they are distorting the views of jesus christ their savior. Of course jews control everything in every part of the world and indian politicians are in bed with the western monsters. The western philosophy is to addict the minds of young people all over the world with their decadence and make money out of it. That will never be sustainable. we are all addicts and then we will be slaves forever.

Why should judeochristian faith be given more importance than the muslim faith? Also one really needs to produce real evidence for atrocities.

In india we were a poor country and let us be poor, but we do have a culture of tolerance and respect. President kalam is where he is because off his hard work. And also i am sure the congress uses him and Mr Manmohan singh to show that they are
secular. WE should tak about equal rights when president kalam becomes the primeminister and roots out corruption in india. Also i really dont want any westerners anywhere near indian political power structure.

5) Why don't Saudi Arabia permit ANY other religion to be propogated in their country ?
6) Why do muslims expect EQUAL RIGHTS in all other countries - and don't grant equal rights to other religions in their countries?
7) Why should other countries not insist on RECIPROCITY?
8) Why do Muslims have this huge persecution complex and victim syndrome - when they are amongst the most aggressiuve and violent people in the world?
9) Why should non - muslim countries allow immigration of muslims when muslims dream of supplanting freedom and democracy with dar-ul-islam - a hateful, filthy system .
