Don't Mix Popular Movements with Government

New Delhi -- The G-8 is an assembly of governments, not popular movements or insurgencies. Should Russia and the other G-8 countries send representatives to the Anti-Iraq War movements in America and Britain?

The variables of Russian democracy are an important subject and democracy everywhere needs continual protection from those who have gained from it. But at least Comrade Putin can claim, legitimately, that he won a transparent election, which our comrades from Beijing, who receive all the love and affection that Washington can possibly bestow, cannot.

Nagarajan Sivakumar:

Very short sighted comments. Putin "legitmately" claiming that he "won" a "transparent" election is a joke. An election of who ? The guy who wouldnt let any serious contender compete or the one who tries to arm twist Ukraine with his country's oil?

China gets all the love for reasons, Mr.Akbar should know - any body with a basic understanding of todays politics would be able to tell him why it is happening. And i dont know what point he is trying to make abt Russia's "legitimate" election and the attention China commands.

Russia sending anti Iraq war protestors to the US is in no way even remotely the same as US officials attending the alternate Russian summit if they wanted to. Please, give me a break!

Andrey Subbotin, Moscow:

Believe me, Putin would have overwhelmingly won any fair election in 1998. Under his government the income of average Russian doubled. Who wouldn't win with such results to show?

Now, some things that developed in the last 6 years are worrying, such as the shutdown of multiparty system, but implying that Putin somehow stole the 1998 election is just ridiculous.

He is not perfect, but he is way, way better than the olygarchs.
