Europe's economic strength is a far more interesting conversation right now than America's potential fall. While Europe faces many looming challenges for its growing community, it seems better prepared than most for the primary global challenge ahead: global warming.

Europe might be taking more important steps in Global Warming than the United States, but their plans to reduce CO2 emissions are really hard to follow and I believe they might have delays in accomplishing those.
Also know that the United States -- even though they have not signed Kyoto --, many states are pitching in and it seems like they do not need Kyoto to guide them. California is also planning on reducing CO2 emissions in the coming years.

While it is a little extreme to credit Europe with the fall of the Soviet Union, the forward thinking democratic governments in Western Europe have certainly created an atmosphere of stability which fosters peace, tolerance, and economic prosperity. Europe has the advantage of millenia of civilisation which foritfies her identification in common goals.
In the United States, the cult of hyperindividualism has led too many to abandon the common interest to the labors of his or her neighbor. Let him spend his buck. Meanwhile, the national debt soars, recession looms, and fiscal responsibility, personally or publically, seems to be a pipe dream.
The current success of the European economy owes a lot to American investment and trade, but it is no longer dependent on it. Europe's social programs are able to address these larger problems without this handicap. They are not perfect. But when the issues are of such vast importance as Global Climate Change (Take the word of an Economist over a Climatologist if you wish, but it is undeniable) and Global Economic Stability, the Hobbesian buisness policies pursued in America fall woefully and disturbingly short.

Well, Adolf Hitler also dreamed of the Germanisches Reich, a.k.a. European Union, but... The European Union is a socialist dictatorship and the most Europeans are against this corrupt regime. However, the European Union has no future.
By the way, the manmade Global Warming myth has been already debunked. It's just a socialist propaganda and only fools believe such nonsense. Just watch 'The Great Global Warming Swindle' at YouTube.

Xavier Sala i Martin, a economist of the Columbia University, is very skeptic about this matter. And in Spain and catalonia is very popular. According to his reports the climate change is not enough proved. Besides this, many people in Europe and USA are not persuaded yet about this. The matter is not closed.

Couple of things...US is a single entity, Asia and Europe is NOT (please, don't say EU, at best a loose confederation that will break down for multiple reasons..and on global warming, please..what is worse..being honest and not signing the treaty (US) or like Europe, signing, with 0 intention of fufilling it's promises. oh, and the man is right..Europe will implode from its social promises..simple math shows this, but feel free to live in denial (but the US does have our own debt issues, but this is the paragraph that is the most deluded
" Europe is not only a recent case of economic success. Europe’s most important struggle has always been the pursuit of peace. If we look back 50 years ago, we can see the beginning of a dream that seemed to have little chance of success. Only six countries – one of them with its territory divided – were in Rome on March, 25, 1957; some of them only a few years before had faced each other in the battlefield. Today the EU has 27 member nations and has won over tyrannies from the Soviets to Salazar, Franco, and more. It is a strong commercial, economic and political organization."...
I guess we forget Europe survived due to the umbrella of US military might and Nuclear Missiles....Peace? The still kill each other in Eastern Europe...Wow, I did not realize this was a fiction work.

* Ted Corcoran:
That is complete trash. Europe is going to implode from its own weight of socialism. They cannnot continue to support all the social programs and entitlements and outperform the US. Keep rooting against the US and see what happens. * Spoken like a true Ugly American who knows nothing about Europe, and revels in his abject ignorance.

The world would be a lot better off if everyone on the planet lived by MY rules.
Rule #1: Live and let live. I don't care what anybody else's religious beliefs are and neither should you. If I'm a Christian and have a Jew living on one side of me and a Muslim living on the other side of me, who cares?
Rule #2: Don't have more children than you can afford to support. Sex feels good and everyone that's married has the right to have as much of it as they can stand. You shouldn't have sex with someone unless you're married to them, but I have no room to talk on that one. Instead of sending billions of dollars overseas for food to feed starving children, (that they never see due to corrupt gov't officials) we should offer $100 to anyone willing to have a vasectomy and $100 to the doctor for every one he performs. Have one or two kids and then go see the doctor. Why bring children into the world just to watch them starve to death? That just ain't right.
Rule #3: Get your priorities straight. Making sure everyone has the big 3 (food, clothing, and shelter) is priority #1. Priority #1 also includes clean water and sanitary sewers. Electricity is nice, but you won't die without it. Just ask the Amish. Human rights are important, but who am I to tell any government how to treat their citizens? If you're not happy living where you are, MOVE! Global warming is a crock! Forget about it. Take that energy and focus it on population control and making sure everyone has the "big 3". There are about a million things to prioritize and a million different ways to do it, but you have to finish #1 before you can move onto #2, whatever that may be for you. Saving the planet is important, but the planet will save itself. Saving ourselves from ourselves is the real challenge.
There you have it. Three simple rules. Live and let live, reduce the number of people living on the planet, and make sure everyone is fed, clothed, and sheltered and has clean water and sanitary sewers before worrying about anything else. Love to All, Kevin

Sometimes I think that Europeans don't know the dirty little secret of many present day Americans that helps explain the gas guzzlers, the global warming deniers lobby and indeed, the War in Iraq.
It is that today, no matter how much they deny it,
many Americans worship money. Capitalism has morphed
in America from an economic theory to a cult and then into the national religion. Indeed the main difference between the 2 political parties is the
ongoing struggle to decide who pays more in taxes.

Dear Ted,
When did you realise that those who don't hold your point of view talk trash?
Ever since WWII Europe has grown. It was once dominated by the US economy and military but no more is this the case. Other economies have grown large: Japan, Korea, India, China, Brazil, and soon Russia. They trade with one another. The US does not control or initiate all trade. If the US goes into recession it will not stop trading but these other nations will have their own buffer: trade with one another and the rest of the world.
The US will fall under its own debt. It will learn from Europe that health schemes, pension schemes etc can not only cost an economy but they can also fuel it. They are socially desirable objectives. I guess that 25% of Americans who live below the poverty line will reject what I have to say and embrace your claim: 'what trash'.
The US has not tried hard enough to reduce energy consumption. It will find out that, without pain, a huge energy saving can be made by a better and more efficient use of energy with slight changes in our lifestyles. Detroit is till making gas guzzlers which are not selling so well. The Barons of Capitalism asked Bush to save them by imposing restrictions and tariffs on foreign car makers. He said NO. Detroit will save itself when they meet market conditions by producing fuel economy cars. Handouts are socialism that disrupt the price mechanism.
The US has polluted the world for years. When Canada objected to acid rainfall from the US it was told to go to hell. It's time the US stopped and thought before putting its foot in its mouth. It has the technology and the drive to make these changes.
Instead of wingeing I suggest that you roll up your sleeves and show us how well you can adapt to the need to Clean and Cool the Globe. Then I suggest you export you smart technology around the world and make a buck. Additionally, we give give you our gratitude.
Ted, the rest of the world is used to being dismissed by loud mothed Americans. When will you realise that the rest of the world is intelligent, wise and thoughtful and that sometimes we get it right and you get it wrong?
Robert James in Sydney.

"...it is wrong simply to hold up the European example to chastise America."
No need to chastise America.
The point is (as the whole world knows): there has been no political will to deal seriously with global warming, in the US, contrary to what we have seen in Europe. Worse still, the US Administration has constantly been in denial, on global warming, going as far as even silencing top climate specialists (NASA, Pentagon, etc.) reporting on the danger to us all of the climate changes observed. That was part of the general efforts the Administration made to reduce the number of so-called "bad news" coming to the attention of American citizens. That could be called lies and deception by omission (omitting to tell the truth or to see that the truth was told).
There has been nothing of the kind to be seen in Europe. On the contrary, Europeans were and still are adamant all Europeans had/have to take drastic actions against global warming.

The U.S. can certainly learn from Europe on energy usage. However, it is wrong simply to hold up the European example to chastise America. Europe's geography is more compact. Its cities being older, are more compact, and the climate in its more populated regions is more moderate than the U.S. climate. All these factors create an easier playing field for energy conservation measures than in the U.S. with so many Sun Belt cities built in the age of the automobile.
The U.S. cannot realistically expect to reduce energy consumption to European levels. The country, though, can reduce consumption substantially and find alternative renewable, non-carbon energy sources for more of its remaining needs.
