Miklós, one of the main problems of Budapest are the extreme centralization of Hungary: 2 million Hungarians out of 10 live in Budapest. That's as bad as in France (12M in Paris out of 60).
Budapest's public transportation is not that bad. What is missing are appealing economic, cultural and industrial activities in smaller cities. Small cities are really frightening (have you ever been to Püspökladány ?) of boredom.
