Miklós Vámos is a Hungarian novelist, screenwriter and talk show host. He is one of the most read and respected writers in his native Hungary. He has taught at Yale University on a Fulbright fellowship, served as The Nation’s East European correspondent, worked as consultant on the Oscar-winning film Mephisto, and presented Hungary’s most-watched cultural television show. Vámos has received numerous awards for his plays, screenplays, novels and short stories, including the Hungarian Merit Award for lifetime achievement. I Worry for All of Us

London has no problems that are entirely London’s alone. Neither has New York, Paris, Berlin, Budapest or any other city in the world. No man or woman with a working brain would think that the latest bomb threats are only worrisome for the people who actually live in London.

Joys of Life vs. Reward for Belief

Martyrdom holds no attraction for those who appreciate nothing greater than the joys of living. And fortunately, most of us belong to this group. The rest of the world lives for beliefs, mostly religious beliefs, and for them the instructions of their denominations are stronger than common sense.

Pick Novels and Forget Escaping

The question sounds astonishing to me -- take into consideration the fact that I am a novelist. Why would anyone want to learn or escape when he or she decides to read? I am not talking about the books that promise to teach you HOW to lose weight, or HOW to travel cheap in Europe, or HOW to fix things in your house. When you say the word BOOK to me, I think of fiction. Especially when we are deliberating about what books we would enjoy reading during our vacation.

Does It Matter Where He's Tried?

This question cannot be answered without a precise knowledge of the Russian system of law and extradition rules. Since I am not familiar with the judicial system in the Russia of today, my answer is quite simple. Their law certainly has a regulation about cases like that. And the Russian prosecutors and police should simply comply with the related rules.
