Star activists are doing what they do the best: selling themselves, together with the issue in question. Since they are famous, their limelight is shared with the issue they advocate. That’s a fair business.
Hopefully, their fans will join people who are interested in global problems in general. There is a narrow stratum of those who are there fans and -- by coincidence -- have also been interested in the important problems of the world. For these nice people the activities of the stars don’t matter, but don’t hurt.
But everyone who helps to force the powers of the world to focus on important problems has done a favor for all of us. From that point of view, the level of his or her fame is only of secondary importance.
I would be happy to see all of Hollywood’s stars join the progressive movements and rallies --even if they do not know what they’re doing. There may be someone whispering in their ear, or they may just be clever on their own. Do the right thing; the rest will follow.
