Miklós Vámos is a Hungarian novelist, screenwriter and talk show host. He is one of the most read and respected writers in his native Hungary. He has taught at Yale University on a Fulbright fellowship, served as The Nation’s East European correspondent, worked as consultant on the Oscar-winning film Mephisto, and presented Hungary’s most-watched cultural television show. Vámos has received numerous awards for his plays, screenplays, novels and short stories, including the Hungarian Merit Award for lifetime achievement. The Book of Fathers is considered his most accomplished novel and has sold 200,000 copies in Hungary. Close.

On TV, Hungary Is a Village of Love Affairs

To answer this lighter question for the spring holidays, I ought to have taken some holiday time to watch more Hungarian television. But I can state confidently that the winner here is Barátok közt (“Among Friends”), a sitcom created by an Australian company about a group of people who do not speak Hungarian and do not live here at all.

AIDS & Terrorism Didn't Bring Us Together

There are so many common problems in the world that cannot be solved. Famine is one of the worst epidemics. It is a real planetary emergency, yet who really seems to care? AIDS is another one. Has it brought rich and poor nations together one inch? Terrorism is not simply a planetary emergency but a threat to life in every corner of this planet. It should have brought together everyone who does not exercise it. Yet instead, a number of the richest countries started a few wars that became the worst international conflict of the 21st century.

Elect a Woman President

It always matters (a bit) who the elected politicians are, as they have the power to shape the future of any country. The problem is that their capabilities are limited because of two obstacles. The first is the limited number of years they can rule. It is hard to find a politician who would bother to act on trends that cannot be changed successfully within his/her 4-5 year term.

Stop the Fear Mongering

What a strange concept, to picture any country holding tangible high-value “cards.” If there was a deck, the United States – the strongest country in the world – would hold most of them. Yet the U.S. still proves unable to really solve anything.
