In Central Europe, and especially in Hungary, the political notions of “right” and “left” have lost their original meanings. Now, the right wing is made up of populists united only by their hatred of the left. The left has little more to offer.
The traditional ideologies no longer motivate political groups, simply the pursuit of majority power in Parliament. Hungarian voters don’t seem ideologically committed anyway. Two huge strata vote in blocs for the right or the left, and our government flip flops between the two.
As far globalization, neither party does much for or against it. It’s all about fighting political adversaries for them. Real problems in Hungary, let alone the world, don’t seem that important to them. This may sound quite negative. But if this can be of some small comfort to my country, I would say the very same thing about most U.S. administrations since the sixties. Sorry, America, I can’t lie.
