Budapest, Hungary - Ladies and Gentleman, I was brought up as a true Catholic boy; only later I learned I was a Jew. Thus, I can brood over the Pope's statements guiltlessly. Regardless, it is he who should feel guilty. Not just for what he said about Muslims, but because he believes the Catholic church should oppose condom usage amidst the AIDS epidemic.
But let's get back to the specific question. I wonder why the Pope thinks he knows what and where Turkey should be. The European Union is not so clever at all. It can't figure out if its newest members were even very good "buys". Consequently, it's even more hesitant about letting more countries in. On the one hand, a bigger and more powerful Union in Europe may have a stronger word in the important issues of the world. On the other hand, the more nations vote, the less decisions go through. And I didn't even mention the financial part of this matter. The newcomers bring ineffective industries into the Union. That means that they'll need support growing.
The Pope's support for the membership of any country is motivated first by eternal Biblical good will, but this might not be enough. It hasn't helped Catholics or other people on the face of this earth advance economically.
