Miklós Vámos is a Hungarian novelist, screenwriter and talk show host. He is one of the most read and respected writers in his native Hungary. He has taught at Yale University on a Fulbright fellowship, served as The Nation’s East European correspondent, worked as consultant on the Oscar-winning film Mephisto, and presented Hungary’s most-watched cultural television show. Vámos has received numerous awards for his plays, screenplays, novels and short stories, including the Hungarian Merit Award for lifetime achievement. The Book of Fathers is considered his most accomplished novel and has sold 200,000 copies in Hungary. Close.

Pope's Words Aren't Enough

Budapest, Hungary - Ladies and Gentleman, I was brought up as a true Catholic boy; only later I learned I was a Jew. Thus, I can brood over the Pope's statements guiltlessly. Regardless, it is he who should feel guilty. Not just for what he said about Muslims, but because he believes the Catholic church should oppose condom usage amidst the AIDS epidemic.

No "He" or "She" in Hungarian

Budapest, Hungary - Hungarian is a weird language. We simply do not have "she" and "he". My American friends marvel at this fact. They presume that the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has prohibited the anti-feminist pronouns of the Hungarian language. When I inform them that we have never had those, they are disappointed.
