If Iraq won't change much, then why stay until 2015? Just what is the reward? Iraqis do not want us there. Blaming them for 9/11 is utter idiocy. Instead of detering attacks, we merely incite enmity. We have no formula to settle the scores of Sunni, Shia, or Kurd, and they will balk and nullify any plan we propose. None of this adds to our security. People forget so easily, conveniently when it suits their political agendas.
Why did we invade Iraq? The surrender terms of the first gulf war treaty required Hussein to openly allow inspectors to check anywhere in his country for weapons. His record as a murderer was clear. He tried to exterminate his own countrymen - the Kurds. We had to establish "no-fly" zones to stop the massacres.
After years of jerking the Clinton administration around, and defying every United Nations demand regarding the unfettered inspection for weapons, President Bush came on the scene. Working through the U.N., Hussein was given a final resolution to comply with the treaty terms or face military intervention.
Guess what? He was still giving us the finger. He not only was jerking the weapons inspectors around, but he was shooting ground to air missiles at our jets patroling the no-fly zones.
It was time to take this fanatic out of business.
Now it seems that the gutless U.N. didn't want to back up their earlier threat to use military force. France and Germany didn't want anything to do with an invasion of Iraq. Could it have been that they were making too much money from illegal trading with Sadam?
Mr. Blair and Mr. Bush had the courage to proceed with the task at hand. Thank God. Sadam is now getting the reward down below for his earthly deeds.
The invasion and downfall of the Baghdad regime went very smoothly. The big mistake we made was in the followup. We tried to institute a democratic government before the people were ready to handle it. We should have maintained order through martial law for a minimum of 15 years. We failed to do this.
When everyone was either riding a camel, riding a horse, sleeping in a tent, or burning wood for heat in a log cabin, we did not have to be concerned about what was happening on the other side of the world. Our only safety concern was about how we were going to get that grizzly that maimed our neighbor last month. Today is a different story. The twin towers debacle reminds us just how secure we are.
As an American, my principal concern is for the life and safety of my family, my neighbors, my fellow countrymen and the United States. Whatever actions are required globally to assure the foregoing are fine with me. To the rest of the world - DEAL WITH IT.

Mr. Young underestimates Shia Iraqi nationalism. Hakim is a Tehran puppet and in the last election lost some 80% of Shia. Sadr may well bring about a Shia-Sunni pact as only he can. But first the US must prove that it doesn't want to takeover Iraqi oil by giving a date certain for withdrawal. Iraq is not in civil war but gangsters war. Once they knoe for sure that US is leaving, the Shia-Sunni nationalists and Maliki will destroy the Iran and the Saudi proxies, bringing about a unity Gov. We can then use the US aid carrot instead of killer US forces stick to influence Baghdad towards democracy. We can lead by examle, impeaching Bush for criminal negligence and incompetence!
