Put to the Sword

Beirut, Lebanon - [Pick: Murder on the Leviathan by Boris Akunin] I'm not going to go to the trouble of answering this post with just one book to recommend. The situation cries out for at least two. Though this has hardly has been a beach party type of summer in Beirut, if caught in a war you'll find that the same standards of mindless entertainment apply.

Forget Popularity, Be Effective

Beirut, Lebanon - No nation wants to be hated, least of all the United States, which aspires to be loved. But as far back as I can remember in the Middle East, no one has collectively loved -- even liked -- the Americans. So the pursuit of love as an aim of foreign policy seems, as always when the U.S. deals with the region, a parochial debate with little resonance for Arabs or Muslims.
