The nativist and xenophobic tone that has transformed the immigration issue into borderline racism forgets the way America was forged.

Let's get real here. We are not talking about immigration, but ILLEGAL immigration. None of the people that came through Ellis Island came here illegally. They all came here legally, and became part of the American fabric of life. THAT is what the American ideal is, NOT coming here illegally and not participating in the American ideal.
Get real.

Leon-
As an American born of an immigrant mother, I too am sickened by the racism in the immigration debates. It's like the Republican candidates want to cater to the lowest common denominator. Our countries' fates are intertwined. While there are problems that need to be addressed, know that many Americans are open minded. I welcome the many positive things Mexican culture has brought to this country! While I love my Scottish heritage, I'm a huge fan of the art, music, food and celebrations of your wonderful country.

Leon, how many of the immigrants who came through Ellis Island came illegally? Their names are on the walls because they registered when they got here. How many willingly and heartfully accepted English as a language they must learn and accept America as their new home? Amazing how those two numbers are so very far apart. It is not just Mexicans that are coming into our country illegally but a huge number from other countries south of Mexico as well.
