Pricing Mexico's Diligent Migrants

Through their hard work and honest living, Mexican migrant workers have earned the right for migration reform. The same could be said of their American employers, who benefit from the migrants' work ethic.

Poverty stricken Mexicans are slaves in Mexico and their Mexican masters treat them much worse then in America. Why don't Mexicans talk about that? Why not talk about how Mexican masters abuse their Mexican slaves?

175 schoolchildren, 9 staff narrowly escape air strike on school

Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Kfir bombers Monday morning bombed a school in Chundikulam, wounding a female teacher and two schoolboys, attending 7th grade and 9th grade at the school, Chundikulam Vidyalayam, located 21 km northeast of Kilinochchi, in the southern part of Vadamaradchi East region in Jaffna district. Three bombs were dropped 25 meters from a class room. A bomb that hit a tree exploded in the air, wounding two children and a teacher. Around 175 schoolchildren, 8 teachers and the principal of the school narrowly escaped from the aerial attack. TamilNet correspondent who visited the site of the attack witnessed a second air strike at 11:45 a.m.

Pedro:

I am not Mexican, nor American, so I would try to summarize what I have learned with all these comments.
Let´s see:
so Mexican immigrants are criminals because coming to the US they bring paychecks down.
But do they have any choice? It´s to come or live on poverty, isn´t it?
are they guilty or guilty is the society who offered them this salary, this opportunity to live a better life?
is it so different from what was done in the past with africans? No doubt they were forced to immigrate, but aren´t the Mexican? To immigrate of live on poverty...

And Mexican Government is so corrupt and vicious... US Government is not. Isn´t it guilty of being complacent to immigration? And why it is so, because immigration sustains the country growing... it is not a statement, I just prefer to think so other than the alternative: it is corrupted by the influence immigrants may exert during elections; or by their money, distributed during fund raising campaings.

Please enlighten me if I am getting it so wrong...

As US Government could not be that lenient and corrupt, I´d rather to believe the immigrants bring profit to the country.

Joel E.:

I want to thoroughly agree with the folks who suggest this country is running low on assets to put a larger population. We have a huge amount of flat land that does not have water, and get even less water in drought. We have areas that look like moon scape, and we have areas they test Mars Rovers in because it is so barren. We don't need more people.

We are told an expanding population means greater economic potential. The wages of the middle class went down while the number of orange barrels zoomed to sky high during the population explosion. It appears that without the illegal aliens in this country we are going to have a housing glut.
=========================
We need a vote on this issue. We need, in fact, a national ballot initiative that would allow us to halt that run-a-way beast called Congress.. when that was called for. On this issue, it is called for. But how about term limits? The Fair Tax? War? We NEED a national ballot initiative ability.

Joel E.:

I fully agree that as long as there are jobs available to illegal aliens, they will come.

But the rules are clear: it is a felony to hire an illegal alien, and that rule has begun to be enforced.

The rules are clear: it is a felony to do business in this country with multipul identification cards.

The rules are clear: illegal aliens are not elgiable to live in HUD housing and that very process has been happening fequently in the last ten years.

The rules are clear: immigration are not permitted to come and involve themselves in crime, and the illegal aliens of this generation are doing exactly that in a very high and disproportionate number.
=================================
We have a rating system in the United States for crime. If you go to http://www.city_data.com and examine a city, you discover they rate the crime in a city by a scale of 0 to 1,000. There has never, ever been a time when the crime rate in the United States stood at that level (in Los Angeles), anywhere. The police have told us clearly they don't investigate in some areas because they cannot. So many under the table wages for the illegal aliens the taxes won't support the police. So the current crime rate is about double the period when there were no illegal aliens, and that rate is bogus because the cops cannot investigate all the crime.

No.. look at an area with a lot of illegal aliens and you discover a lot of narcotics very high crime rate, and frequently that crime includes a fire arm. Lots of statistic on it too, and from the DOJ web.

East:

Joel E.:

I am not asking you to believe anything I am just stating that as long as there are jobs available to illegal immigrants the problem will exist . LA always been a high crime area, this is not new to southern California, you can balm Mexican or whom ever you want. Everyone taking about it like it use to be the most safes place in the world, some might argue that it is safer now then the 90’s. it is what it is.

I sense an underlying fear here that Americans have about democracy. The growing demographic shifts in the percentage of legal voting Latinos means more power for that group. This frightens whites who will lose some of their power.
=================================
The race card, and the pro illegal aliens are always supply opinions while the pro established law supply the facts. And the facts that suggest we need the military on the border and a massive round up of illegal aliens is very, very large. Illegal aliens have killed more people.. and that is rising daily.. that we have lost in Iraq.

And the idea that our Congress and two Presidents ceased funding the Immigration Service and then suggested.. oh well.. lets let them in.. tells us there is a huge, very ugly gap in the business of representing the people of this country.

We NEED a national ballot initiative in permante place that will stop this sort of thing at it's rotten root. The cure is to stop Mexican Corruption: not force the American Citizens to assume the responsibility (with welfare in many, many cases) for a massive impoverished group from Mexico.

And it is a question that should never have been asked too. And in any case, we should be allowed to vote on the issue.

MikeB:

Roy...playing the race card when you can't win on logic and facts? Please spare us! That horse has been beaten way too many times and we're all more than a little sick of it. Also, rather morally and intellectually bankrupt of you. And, since I'm Native American I can't racist or it is somehow excusable ...at least according to white liberals.

Old Atlantic:

"Mexicans here in Mexico are racist when they stereotype all gringos as arrogant, foolish with money, smelly, and corrupt."

Why is it racism for us not to want people with that attitude to come here, take over, and have power over us?

Roy:

I sense an underlying fear here that Americans have about democracy. The growing demographic shifts in the percentage of legal voting Latinos means more power for that group. This frightens whites who will lose some of their power. Democracy is God-given to those in power now but a threat when they aren't an overwhelming majority in the future. In regard to illegals, there is still a lot of stereotyping that all of them are freeloaders, drug dealers or criminals. This is racism just as Mexicans here in Mexico are racist when they stereotype all gringos as arrogant, foolish with money, smelly, and corrupt.

Old Atlantic:

The top .01 percent of households got 3 percent of national income before 1920's immigration, restriction, .5 percent at the time of the 1965 Immigration Act, and are now back up to 3 percent. See Fig 3 of

Old Atlantic:

MikeB: You are right that many and possibly most (I don't know how to measure it) "illegal immigrants are honest, hard working people, desparately poor, who' sole desire is to feed their children and provide a future for them".

You are also right that "whites and Asians and Native Americans all are just a few missed paychecks away from that hell. " This is why female fertility is below replacement, 51 percent of women live alone, men's median wages are lower than in 1973, the top 1 percent get 20 percent of national income
compared to 10 percent before the 1965 Act and 20 percent before immigration restriction in the 1920's.

Earth and America are above their sustainable population. We have to choose our continued below replacement fertility or to stop all immigration, legal or not.

TEX:

For all of those wishing to better themselves do it legally and there would not be a problem. I see another Civil War coming and it is to deport the destitute illegals and annex those territories just south of the border. Remember Edgar Cayce. It is only a matter of time. Imagine going to the mall in California and not hearing English spoken anywhere. Rights, illegals have no rights period.

Joel E.:

East asks us to believe the illegal aliens are making significant contributions to our society. The fact is, the day labor centers in this country are directly involved in arranging under the table wages for the illegal aliens, and those wages are massive, and never have taxes paid on them.

http://www.rense.com/general75/inva.htm
1. 40% of all workers in L.A. County ( L.A. County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes. This was because they are predominantly illegal immigrants, working without a green card.

2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.

3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.

4. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers.

5. Nearly 25% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally.

6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.

7. The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.

8. Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.

9. 21 radio stations in L.A. are Spanish speaking.

10. In L.A. County 5.1 million people speak English.

3.9 million speak Spanish. (There are 10.2 million people in L.A. County).

Mary, Old Atlantic -
Look, most, by far the majority, of illegal immigrants are honest, hard working people, desparately poor, who' sole desire is to feed their children and provide a future for them. The consequences we are suffering has little to do with the nature of these people, it has to do with their very numbers. There are gangs and violence with any group of poor people - it's a consequence of it and whites and Asians and Native Americans all are just a few missed paychecks away from that hell. I think we need to deport the illegal immigrants, but I take no pride in it and feel deep regret fo being forced to do it.

Old Atlantic:

" There is something seriously wrong with an "immigration" process if it makes the native-born population run away." Mary.

Yes its called ethnic cleansing and its a violation of the treaty against genocide, which the US has signed. Its also a violation of many Constitutional guarantees. Because it does not promote the general welfare, such immigration lacks a constitutional basis as well.

Mary:

Native-born Californians are fleeing their state at the rate of 350,000 per year. Massive illegal immigration has produced drug gangs (40,000 members in Los Angeles alone) and Latin American-style corruption in our institution. Our state and national parks are currently being environmentally destroyed by the Mexican mafia planting dope on environmentally pristine land set aside decades ago for the enjoyment of all Americans. There is something seriously wrong with an "immigration" process if it makes the native-born population run away.

East:

MikeB: I fully understand where you coming from, but wouldn’t you agree it is corporate America that create all the illegal immigrates issues. Whom ever is benefiting from this shareholder …Wall street …Stock Market. ….ect at the end of the day they are Americans( May be not most of people but never the less Americans ) . if you own any kind of stock of those companies that abuse laws and people you are part of the problem if you do not do anything about it.
No easy job for illegal immigrates = no illegal immigrates. No exploitation of labor of any kind the better for American folk.

MikeB:

East, as with so much "common wisdom", it is so wrong, so far off the mark, that it begs a reply. Apple Computer outsourced the manufacture of their new line of MacIntosh computers. Not one dime was cut from the price, even though the labor and engineering costs went down by a factor of ten. All of those homes being built with illegal labor, paid under the table, mostly by huge corporations these days, rather than local home builders. No drop in housing prices! They pay less than half of what they paid in 2000 for labor costs. it isn't passed on to the home buyer. Look at WalMart. They they don't cover health care or other benefits for most employees and pay about $10 an hour for wages. Lower costs? Nope! We have a local discount chain here in the Northwest that pays employees an average salary of around $20 an hour and pays for medical benefits to boot. They have costs slightly *lower* than WalMart. (WalMart's answer i to try and buy they out, by the way!) Lower costs for food, fruit, vegetables, produce? Nope. No noticeable change in the rate of increase since we were swarmed by illegal immigrants, taking those jobs from American workers. Meat? In 1980, Swift paid meat packers and average of $18 an hour. It's around $10 an hour now....remember all those busts a few months back where half of the workers were illegals? Lower meat prices? Nope.

The sad fact is, employers and investors drive costs down and pocket the extra money made. You are not going to ever see lower costs from employers who use desperately poor immigrants as a blunt instrument to beat wages down, do away with medical and other benefits. George W. Bush's America doesn't work that way. It's all a gigantic Ponzi Scheme, designed to transfer wealth from the rest of us to his already wealthy friends.

East:

You can not have it both ways; you either want cheap goods or higher wages. I do not think lower wages are the products of illegal immigrants; it is the consumer demands for cheaper goods. The main reason most companies outsources labor is to stay competitive and provide less expensive good to the American consumer. Some companies like to hire LEGAL immigrants because they can get away with paying them less than market wages and no benefits. Why are we blaming illegal immigrants on driving wages down, Isn’t illegal to hire them? If all companies follow the law and stop abusing laborer then that will be taking care of. One more thing corporate America is run by Americans, not illegal immigrants, there is not one to blame but Americans for law wages and outsources labor. And it would not be too long until the same labor exploitations starts happening to American workers by foreigner companies and corporations. And believe me when you get hungry enough you will work for much less.

MikeB:

Roy, allow me to use the town of Hazleton as an example. This is a small community in Pennsylvania that is being overwhelmed by the cost of illegal immigrants. In 2000, ESL costs at the local public school was $600. Today it is 1.3 million dollars. In 1994 Hazleton had one murder, the next homicide occurred in 2001. In 2002 Hazelton has four murders, in 2004 and 2005 five murders, last year they had six. Every single one of the murders from 2002 onward was committed by an illegal Mexican immigrant. Hazelton had never had an problem with gangs or gang violence. Now, they have a large Hispanic gang composed of more than 50 members, most of them illegal, selling drugs, committing burglaries, involved in numerous assaults, armed robberies, etc. To deal with them, the police department has had to employ two additional full time officers. The local jail has been forced to employ additional personnel to deal with a largely Hispanic upsurge in arrests resulting in incarceration. The local hospital has had to handle more than 14,000 non-reimbursable medical claims for uninsured Hispanic immigrants costing 133.3 million dollars PER YEAR. No one even knows the amount of money lost to identity theft and fraud and bills simply walked away from. And, remember, this is one small community. This is a situation repeated tens of thousands of time all across the U.S. I imagine, if people got off their PC bandwagons, that the total cost to taxpayers for the 20 million or so illegal immigrants in this country would come very close to the entire budget for the federal government, but let's just accept the common 1.4 trillion dollar figure for now. We cannot afford this.

Anonymous:

Its time to put a stop to the illegal immigration. There are migrants that are extremely dedicated and hardworking individuals and by gaining citizenship would be a tribute to this country. There are even illegal aliens that are the same way. BUT they are illegal. Get them the hell out of here. Start laying huge fines and jail time on employers that have been found to hire illegals. They're milking a system thats not even theirs; they're international parasites. I don't want my tax money supporting a family of 12 of welfare and paying for their sons gang wounds in hospitals.

And I'm tired of the tax money going to jailing and keeping these offenders. As soon as someone in custody is determined to be an illegal it should be a bullet to the heart or the fastest ticket to the most dangerous slum in Mexico City. I can feel symathy for an illegal that comes and works hard to make a better life for himself, even if it is illegal. But I have a huge problem with the ones that come here and make it a worse place to live. The quicker we tighten the border, the better for all true Americans.

Kate:

"rational" man - how exactly is pedro mooching if he can't afford to feed his family? the moocher is pedro's employer, who is not paying pedro what pedro's labor costs - he's deferring these costs to the public. Pedro's employer recruited him from mexico with promises of a better living than he delivered.

I do believe that the influx of esily exploited labor drives down wages - but let's be clear about who's driving the process. The other thing that scares me is that it strengthens the organized crime rings that smuggle people (and god knows what else).

But in addition to securing the border and prosecuting employers (something that decreased 90% since 2001), we should make legal imigration easier. Cut the coyotes' feed and let the hondurans pass by the mexican police altogether. And everyone is subject to the same cost of living/taxes that citizen workers are subject to, so no favoritism in hiring. if we make it too hard for skilled/tech workers to come here, they start up competing businesses at home instead, and we lose our edge.

I'm queasy about a guest worker program - because you end up with the same easily exploitable population that bids down wages - only it does so legally. If you're good enough to work here, you're good enough to stay here. Anything less seems un-american.

as for the nativist/birth rate argument - get over it - at least we'll have someone to pay our social security. Actually, the second generation of imigrants has the same birthrate as the native population, again because they're subject to the same financial conditions as everyone else.

Roy:

Mike, thanks for your civil reply. Do your statisics take into account social security and taxes that immigrants do pay for which they get no refunds and benefits? Do they include the benefits of lower prices for fruits, vegetables, homes and services as a result of migrants working for less? I would be interested in knowing if these are included in your statistics. The figures I saw, which included these items less the benefits of lower costs, was a cost to American taxpayers of about $20B less $16B paid by Mexicans in unclaimed tax refunds and social security. This leaves a $4B difference which is offset some by the financial benefits of lower prices as a result of migrant labor. This is still a lot but little in comparison to what we spend a month killing Arabs overseas.

"In 2005, 51 percent of women said they were living without a spouse, up from 35 percent in 1950 and 49 percent in 2000."

This is because of immigration. In 1950 when immigration was low, only 35 percent of women lived without a spouse. Now it is 51 percent.

Men's median wages were going up before 1973 because the 1965 Immigration Act was still only beginning to cut in.

rational man:

Taki-

Mexicans comprise mexico, a country which would be a very poor living standard for an american. The more mexicans in the USA, the more it will be like mexico. Mexicans definitely dont uplift our standard of living in any way, monetarily or socially.

MikeB:

Roy in Chiapas, Mexico - Roy, I am not a conservative. I'm actually a liberal. And, unfortunately, the facts as publoished by th various states bear out a couple of things. Slightly over half of the gang violence in the U.S. is due to illegals. More than half of our pirson population for violent crime are illegals. And illegals cost this country in excess of 1.4 trillion dollars a year. Moreover, illegals take jobs from American's and drive wages and benefits down, by 50% or more, for American's. The pay, for example, for a meat cutter was $18 an hour in 1980. Today it is less than $10 a hour and well over half of those jobs are taken by illegals. Two_thirds of the jobs in construction are taken by illegals, usually paid under the table. Trades like concrete workers, carpenters, painters, roofers, drywall installer, all of which paid close to $20 an hour in 2000 now pay an average of $8 an hour.
The fact is, we cannot afford illegals. It may sound hard hearted but we either round them up and deport them or we end up bankrupt. And consider this, as U.S. workers loose their jobs and become desparately poor, the illegals, even if granted some sort of amnesty, will become targets. We are no more than a hairs width from becoming the next Nazi Germany with all of those illegals being the next Jews.

“Numbers Drop for the Married With Children
Institution Becoming The Choice of the Educated, Affluent”

By Blaine Harden
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, March 4, 2007; Page A03

Excerpts below.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Punctuating a fundamental change in American family life, married couples with children now occupy fewer than one in every four households — a share that has been slashed in half since 1960 and is the lowest ever recorded by the census.

As marriage with children becomes an exception rather than the norm, social scientists say it is also becoming the self-selected province of the college-educated and the affluent.

“The culture is shifting, and marriage has almost become a luxury item, one that only the well educated and well paid are interested in,” said Isabel V. Sawhill, an expert on marriage and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Many demographers peg the rise of a class-based marriage gap to the erosion since 1970 of the broad-based economic prosperity that followed World War II.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/03/AR2007030300841.html

This was caused by the 1965 Immigration Act. Kennedy benefited because he is in the top 1 percent of households that now get 20 percent of income instead of 10 percent before the 1965 Act. They got 20 percent before immigration restriction. See graph:

Rational Man:
What do you say to this: Pedro gives America 4 kids.
Now since the white women has stopped producing children and the black kids in this country mostly have single Moms. So you get a son-in-law or a daughter-in-law and a new genetic pool and a vibrant family with a very low divorce rate.
That is rejuvenating.
Think about it. Money is not everything.

migration between Mexico and the United States is virtuous and symbiotic
-----------

I'm sorry, Leon, but what support for that do you offer, when you concede what looks like the very definition of the 'slavery' that you think is not an apt characterization? :

"Remittances provide more than 20 billion dollars a year to Mexico. However, most of that amount is used to cover daily expenses [i.e. no savings, no investment]."

Tres por uno - where are those "government" dollars coming from? Not the migrant workers, right? The USA consumers, the beneficiaries of their non-migrant status?

Are you willing to propose a 'migrant tax' on US corporations to match dollars-for-dollars?

If not, why *isn't* this just the age old labor exploitation story?

"Benavides Huaroco ... looks like an exemplary tale ..."

When stories like this account for more than 25-50% of all the stories, let's talk. Until then, it's just looks like propaganda.

Toan Nguyen:

All I can say is that it's scary how some of you are reacting. Well, like it or not, illegal immigrants form are a large part of the current wave of people coming to America. Their children will most like become citizens. Your sons or daughters may marry one of them. You will buy goods made by them. You will eat food made by them. The change is happening. There's always people who resist change, but there's many who embrace it as well.

rational man:

Here is an example: Pedro works hard for a home builder 10 hrs a day, for 6 dollars an hour, and of course no healthcare provided by the employer. He ends up with $300 a week, 1200 a month cash. He pays no income taxes. Pedros wife and 4 kids also have immigrated with him, his kids are ages 1, 3,4, and 6. His wife stays at home with the youngest and has no job. His other 3 kids go to public taxpayer funded school. It costs $7000 per child per year to attend public school. Pedros wife had 2 of her kids in US hospitals, at a cost of $15,000 each which taxpayers paid. Pedro pays $1000 a month for his 3 bedroom rental house, and $200 a month in utility bill costs. Pedro has no money left for food, medical, or entertainment. His family gets 500 a month in food stamps, and on average goes to the health clinic 2 times a month, at a cost of $500 each time. Lets see what benefit Pedros family provides to the United States, and we can see why we shoudl welcome them.

-30,000 for two births
-280,000 for4 kids at 7000 per year for 10 yrs of public school
-25,000 for 10 years of visiting the helth clinic for his family
-60,000 for food stamps for 10 years

Total average cost of a mexican immigrant family = $395,000

3.5 million immigrant families in the USA = 1,481,250,000,000

divide this by 270 million legal US residents like you and I, and we pay $5,486 dollars a year each to support them

Pedro pays no taxes because eh doesnt make enough money and his full pay is in cash

Pedros family has no extra money for entertainment, so his kids are tempted to steal and sell drugs

I will do the same work pedro does, but i will need $18 dollars an hour so i will not need to mooch as pedro does

do we need pedros family?

Joel E.:

We, as a nation, need the opportunity to decide what we want in the way of population and growth. I do NOT want the Senate to decide those things, and suggestions that we elected the Congress to make those decisions is so clearly fraudulent it is sorry.

Illegal Aliens Linked to Rise in Crime Statistics
Jim Kouri

In the population study of a sample of 55,322 illegal aliens, researchers found that they were arrested at least a total of 459,614 times, averaging about 8 arrests per illegal alien. Nearly all had more than 1 arrest. Thirty-eight percent (about 21,000) had between 2 and 5 arrests, 32 percent (about 18,000) had between 6 and 10 arrests, and 26 percent (about 15,000) had 11 or more arrests. Most of the arrests occurred after 1990.

They were arrested for a total of about 700,000 criminal offenses, averaging about 13 offenses per illegal alien. One arrest incident may include multiple offenses, a fact that explains why there are nearly one and half times more offenses than arrests. Almost all of these illegal aliens were arrested for more than 1 offense. Slightly more than half of the 55,322 illegal aliens had between 2 and 10 offenses.

About 45 percent of all offenses were drug or immigration offenses. About 15 percent were property-related offenses such as burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and property damage. About 12 percent were for violent offenses such as murder, robbery, assault, and sex-related crimes.

The balance was for such offenses as traffic violations, including driving under the influence; fraud --including forgery and counterfeiting; weapons violations; and obstruction of justice.

Eighty percent of all arrests occurred in three states--California, Texas, and Arizona. Specifically, about 58 percent of all arrests occurred in California, 14 percent in Texas, and 8 percent in Arizona.

Uh...I dont think so. Family planning is the reason why we have all these jobs that need to get done, but aren't, because there's no people to do them. Namely abortion. The United States alone has exterminated over 50 million of its potential workforce before they've even been born. Just look at Europe. The native population there is headed towards a demographic disaster because their fertility rates are so low.

Roy in Chiapas, Mexico:

MIKEB says *Moreover, over half of the violent crime in this country is due to illegal Mexican immigrants, 65% of the welfare fraud is due to that group, over half of the identity theft is due to them, and it goes on and on. Illegal Mexican immigrants cost this country, and this s conservative estimate, 1.4 trillion dollars a year in law enforcement, education, social services, and other costs.* Where did you come up with such ridiculous BS? Is it from a white supremicist or Christian extremist group? Maybe Karl Rove? Can you substantiate your "facts"?

As for LEON, take a look at the way Mexicans treat immigrants. I live in Chiapas where immigrants are robbed, beaten and raped by the local and state police. I live here legally but the process is so bureucratic and costly that I lose over a months wages in time and fees each year to renew my work visa. Some Mexicans, like other people in the world, are hard working and others, like other people in the world, are freeloading criminals. Freeloading criminals don't deserve anything. Hardworking honest people do.

The issue is complicated because of racism on both side of the border as well as governments on both sides that look the other way while people on both sides take advantage of others. The US needs a reasonable worker visa program now. Mexicans need to respect US laws while they are in the US as I must repect Mexican laws while I live in Mexico. No one put a gun to my head and said go to Mexico just as no one put a gun to the heads of the Mexican immigrants and said go to the US. Americans and Mexican both are very selfish and racist, seeing things as only one sided without caring to understand the other. LEON and MikeB are examples.

Tarik:

Why blame the Mexicans!
Why call them names.
Why have we left our borders open??
Surely some people have a stake in their cheap labour.
Perhaps it is normal for Americans to blame someone else? Where is the responsibility to maintain the integrity of our borders.
Always blame someone else!
How do drugs from Columbia get to downtown NY.The answer is Columbian drug cartel !! No one ever said the NY drug cartel!
In Dubai 80% population is expatriate labor and they all have valid working visa, and they have to get a new visa if they change jobs and have to have release letter from former employer or they have to go back to their country of origin and get a new visa from a new employer to return.
Criminals are deported as part of the contract.
Last week Saudi Arabi hanged 2 drug traffickers.
Iran also last week executed 2 drug traffickers.
The trials are often swift. They will not hesitate to hang one of their own.
However it goes without saying that this is just the other end of spectrum. We need to have a fair and a just system. To start with: first take responsibility.

Sammer:

As someone who has been through the legal American immigration system( akh horrible procedure) I wish that all illegals would do it the correct way. It is not fair for those of us who came here legally and put up with the arduous immigration process while some people just choose to walk in. On the other hand, I must say that Mexicans are some of the hardest working people i have ever seen and the majority of which are great people. Also, i am not sure if this country could get along with out them. I am from Florida and boy are the employers and businesses complaining about loss of labor and the Mexican money they spend at businesses.
I do not agree that they should be given legal citizenship status, but I think some sort of special Id Card should be created for them. They are not going to leave and something must be done to clean this up.

Austin, Texas:

Deport all illegals to wherever they are from. Criminal is criminal and no matter how they are here or what they are doing here bottom line is they are criminal and should not be here. For the most part they pull down wages and hurt American workers. I am a master carpenter and made $26.00 an hour with benefits for 15 years. In the last 10 years I cannot find work for above $15.00 an hour because employers point to 3-6 illegals and say together they do what I myself do and it costs the employer $6- $10 an hour for each of them. Additional savings for the employer is no Social Security, Medicaid, Unemployment, or Worker's Comp taxes are paid, not to mention no healthcare benefits because the illegals get that free at local hospitals anyway. It is not that illegals do jobs American will not do but they drive the wages for these jobs so low that American often cannot make a living off of them.
In a generation America will like Mexico, no middle class, only the rich and the poor because the middle class is being destroyed by cheap labor provided by illegal aliens.
Emploers who hire them should be fined and or have their assets seized, all day labor sites should be raided and closed, no citizenship for illegals who have "jackpot babies", no welfare, no education, healthcare, and soon the flood will dry up.

e bradley:

I agree with those who are against illegal immigration. We are not only getting all of Mexico, but Hondurans, El Salvadorans, Guatamalans, etc. The number of gang members in our city has tripled in the last 10 years. Contractors who have sold out our country and gotten rich should be ashamed. I know a painting contractor who bought a house for each of his children off the work of his illegal employees. But my son, who does not live in our state, lost his trucking job. The store hired the company down the road that hires illegals and thus charges less.

Tirade:

Right, because legal US citizens never drive under the influence or commit crimes. Take your straw man arguments elsewhere.

Dwane Braswell, 35, and his 9-year-old son, Jerry, of Clayton were in a big rig Sunday when a car ran a stop sign and darted out in front of them. Braswell swerved to avoid it, but his cab rolled over and burst into flames, killing the father and son.

The other driver, Luciano Telles, fled but is now in the Johnston County Jail. He had prior DUIs in Wake County and is an illegal immigrant.

PJC:

Over half the violent crime in America is from Mexican immigrants? That may be the single stupidist thing I've ever read on the web. Think about the logic there pal. We are a country of 300 million, and 3 percent of that population (the roughly 10 million Mexican immigrants in the country, according to the Center for Immigration Studies) is responsible for more than 50 percent of the violent crime? Don't believe everything you read, and use your brain there MikeB...

MikeB:

I;m getting a little sick of this. First off, in the Post, we were treated to a series of outrageous lies - stories about Mexican workers only taking jobs that Amercian's didn't want. Then, after a long time, it finally came out that illegal Mexican workers had flooded the meat packing industry and had driven wages down from an average of $18 an hour to less than $10. Then, we found out that 2/3 --- TWo THIRDS!!!! - of the construction jobs in this countryr had been taken over by illegals, again driving down wages by at least half. Now, we read that of these these millions and millions of illegal workers, less than one in ten pay ANY taxes on their wages whatsoever. Moreover, over half of the violent crime in this country is due to illegal Mexican immigrants, 65% of the welfare fraud is due to that group, over half of the identity theft is due to them, and it goes on and on. Illegal Mexican immigrants cost this country, and this s conservative estimate, 1.4 trillion dollars a year in law enforcement, education, social services, and other costs. They are more than 50 times more likely to walk away from an owed bill -- a hospital bill or credit card bill or other loan. That doesn't sound so honest to me! If some politician is so insane as to grant these people some form of amnesty, they will be competing for every unskilled and semi-skilled job available. This will simply ruin millions of American workers as they compete for those jobs in a downward spiral trading health benefits, vacation, wages, and work conditions. Any politician doing this WILL BE targeted and WILL lose THEIR JOB. I'm an American, I'm a Democrat to boot, and I want every single illegal in this country rounded up and tossed. I also want the 14th Amendment interpreted for what is what written as - as a means to legalize the children of slaves after the Civil War. It explicitly denies citizenship to offspring of people here committing a crime anyways, and illegals are by definition here illegally. Boot 'em all!

Pam:

Fact: Mexico is the richest nation in Latin American.
Fact: The wealth is controlled by the Government, corporations (including US corporations), social elites, and drug cartels.
Fact: The average Mexican citizen relies on small scale agriculture (corn, bean, & sugar cane-all food staples) and local markets for income and necessities. Since NAFTA was signed, "subsidized US products have been entering the Mexican market in massive amounts, making local products uncompetitive."
Fact: Agriculture is dominated by mega-corps like Maseca, who controls 85% of cornmeal flour, and US giant Cargill. Increased import quotas of corn without tariffs and corporate domination of corn production for ethanol have caused the price of corn tortillas-nutritionally essential in the diet of the poorest Mexicans-to increase by 14% in 2006 and 30% in three years.
Fact: By 2008, NAFTA provides for the elimination of import quotas on three basic food products for Mexicans: corn, beans and sugar cane.
Fact: Mexico's average GDP per capita is $10,600 as compared to $43,500 in US. Level of education in Mexico is 7 years as compared to 12 years in the US.
The average Mexican is poor, under-educated, has no health care or pension benefits. The Mexican government has the wealth to provide these basic services, but chooses not to do so in favor of the elites. It's no wonder that these people are desperate to get into the US, no matter the cost.
US citizens are not responsible for the inhumanity of the Mexican government. Political pressure should be put on Mexico to take care of their people. US citizens and legal residents have a right to a secure border and an orderly system of immigration. The immigrants waiting for legal entry into the US should not be placed at the end of the line. Americans are a humane people, but we cannot absorb the numbers or the cost of illegal immigrants who come from countries whose greedy governments refuse to care for own their people.

Tomas Diego El Cid Mora:

Illegal being the operative word here. There is a differance between an immigrant and an illegal alien. Subdued language of illegal immigrant by advocay groups pushing for special treatment for criminals is sickening. I came to America legally with my family in 1990, from Tampico Mexico. It took nothing to leave Mexico and about 6 months of paperwork and waiting to enter and stay in America, afterwhich we promptly became American citizens.
Mexico is corrupt, no middle class, only rich and poor. The government makes billions on foreign aid and gives very little to the masses. True there is free healtcare and free education through the 6th grade but very little else.
Illegals in Mexico from other southern countries are routinely robbed, raped, beaten and killed by the Mexican police and army that patrol the borders.
Many people illegaly go to America to eanr a better living than back home and some send money back to their families to help them but they can just do it legal and there would be no problem in America. The Mexican government actually encourages illegal immigration to America because it directly benefits from it by the monies sent back to Mexico. As a child in school it was repeatedly taught that Mexicans should go to American and repopulate the southwestern states that were stolen from Mexico by the Yankees.

What about Illegals in Mexico?:

According to the Mexican Constitution:
An illegal alien in Mexico is a felon.
Anyone with knowledge of an illegal alien is obligated by law to detain the illegal alien and in due speed turn them over to authorities. If they fail to do so they themselves are a felon.
Illegal aliens have no access to social services, healthcare, or education services.
Illegal aliens are banned from all professional and most other jobs.
Only children born in Mexico to natural born Mexican citizen parents are granted Mexican Citizenship.
Only Mexican citizens can own most types of property in Mexico.

Maybe America should adopt some of these highlighted laws from Mexico. An illegal alien in America is a felon if caught for the second time.
Along most of Mexico's southern border is a wall to keep illegals out and it is patrolled by their military.

East:

We are all immigrants, not illegal immigrant. It seems that the Mexican US immigration issue will never be solved, because there are Billions of Dollars to be lost. Cheep labor is very attractive thing to let go of, on the other hand many of Mexicans workers are not going back like they used to. Why leave when you have year round work, it use too be mostly farm worker and as soon as the harvest season is over they go back not anymore now they are here to stay. Honestly most of them think that the US took “their land” therefore they are entitled to stay as long as they want. In their minds why ask for something when it is yours to begin with.
