mümtaz:

This is a condensed but useful article. To emphasize the importance and inevitable victory of the secular Turkish republic, let us look at a few realities :1- minority rights..there is not a single law discreminating minorities.. in addition, there is no hostile attitude in Turkish culture to variant races, religions maybe due to moving from central asia to turkey as nomads and on the way mixing with different cultures. 2- Womens rights.. Turkey has given women the right to vote and be voted much before some Western countries. 3- Upward social mobility.. there are no legal or social obstacles in moving from bottom to top. 4- secularism.. the state is sensitive in keeping religion separate from governing. the secularity is under the protection of the constitution. 5- the declared aim of the State is to catch up the modern civilization and the welfare. One can list many more democratic and forward traits. Of course, there are problems. To me who lives in Turkey, the most important of these deficiencies is the burocracy. The burocracy does not reflect the positive gains of of the republic, yet. There seems to be a problem in our education system that feeds the burocracy.

No.May be Pope is wrong .History is the proof otherwise. It will be digging the grave for European children in future. You never know what events take the future shape. You are inviting trouble. It is better to be friendly and close from a distance with someone who is unable to accept your point of view culturally and socially. It would be much better to wait till the temperament of civilisations mature and people have totally wiped out the sins of past.It is like asking admittance of Euroopean countries into Organisation of Arab states.
