Mexico City, Mexico -- Granted, a U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon might be the best available option to persuade Hezbollah to disarm and de-escalate the Israeli military response. Still, as experience undoubtedly has proved, little can be achieved if U.N. boots are not tied to U.N. ideas or other aggressive diplomatic efforts.
Most of all, the volatile situation in the Middle East calls for renewed, genuine engagement by the United States. The Lebanese-Israeli conflict bears the mark of several hidden hands. The roles of Syria and Iran must be understood clearly and dealt with decisively before any peaceful solution can be reached. Lebanon has become an increasingly moderate country. I am under the impression that most citizens there view Hezbollah with a growing weariness. Radicalism cannot be allowed to take root in Lebanon. As is the case with almost every struggle, this one brings political opportunities to the Middel East. The U.N., the United States and the region as a whole must seize the moment.
