I have never quite understood the point of counter-summits or any other alternative demonstrations in or around a formal conference on world affairs. I tend not to trust those who rely on megaphones and songs of protest. I have the same worries about the G-8 counter-summit in St. Petersburg.
There are many things wrong with Vladimir Putin's Russia. The country's political system is flawed and Russian society is far from free. Let there be no doubt: Putin is an authoritarian. But, still, one has to ask: are Russians really so disappointed with him? Polls in Russia indicate that people not only respect their president but, in many cases, thank him for the economic stability the country has enjoyed for some time now. That is not to say that the West should not press Putin for reform. And yet, the way to achieve such a thing is not, I'm afraid, through legitimizing this - or any other - counter-summit. With the Iranian question still in the air, the United States can't really gamble with its relationship with the Kremlin. Even if Bush is no Reagan and Putin is no Gorbachev, we must never forget the lessons brought to us by the end of the Cold War.
