I wonder about US’s moral high grounds, especially this administration’s ethical and human rights conducts against Muslims. Why is Bush so low key on Tibet’s fight against the continual occupation by the Chinese’s Communist Regime.
I supposed one of the reasons is that US’s economy is jointed at the hip with China’s manufacture infrastructure. US largest blue chips all have huge projects going on in China or have China companies as partners. And large portions of our mortgage loans are financed by China; I could see the terror it would arouse should there be the kind of boycott similar to the one after the Tiananmen Massacre. Bush’s Masters surly are tugging on the strings to make sure he doesn’t act with any proper humanitarian decency. Let’s wait for this topic on another PostGlobal discussion.
To your question “IVAN”, citing what Ron Paul was posing during his run during the GOP’s primary is simply that two extremes don’t make a right.
Without US and the rest of the free world countries posing punishment to a more self-assured and bold autocratic regime might ensure continuation flow of cheap goods into US. But that is like putting a Band-Aid on a deep gash.
A well behaved and a prospered China are in the interests of United States and the world at large. And we need to bite down and endure the initial pain and stitch the gash properly.
China needs to be thought the right lessons with the right punishment in order to grow into a responsible world economic and military power. China need to know the hand that gave their new found wealth will able to punish without hesitation should they behave like a bully(ironically, like the US) towards their neighbors, occupied or not.
In our own interests we need to boycott China goods and the Olympic Games.
That's all very well but I'd like to make a couple of points here:
Firstly, the fact that the US government has no right to publish and/or judge other governments separately from greater organizations, like the United Nations. We all know that the countries mentioned deny basic rights to their citizens but it is that US arrogance that has caused so many problems and has led many groups around the world, from Latin America to Europe and the Middle East to Asia to lose respect towards the most developed nation in the world, so why keep that arrogance alive?
Secondly, if a list should be made, the US would have to be in it for offending human rights in both, the US and around the world.
I don't think Americans see the picture everyone else sees. You actually PAY for health care, making huge corporations richer and richer (and their lobbyists at the Congress and White House and some presidential candidates too). Isn't free health care a BASIC human right?
Historically, the US has been an offender around the world and I don't think I need to cite examples here, after all the US is at war at present; a war that doesn't belong to them and where over 4000 American soldiers have died so far, 4000 American families crippled.
Shouldn't the US take better care of their citizens than waste time and money judging countries around the world?
I think that China should let go of their 'sovereignty' by force over: Tibet, Taiwan and Hong Kong and any other nation that wants its independence. To force people and countries under by force is against basic human rights and freedoms. Other nations should recognize the independence of each other and that includes Tibet, to be a good member with United Nations. If China is recognized as a nation, so should all the nations it invaded be recognized as independent nations. To host the Olympics, China should respect other nations like Tibet and release their rule by force, because most nations in UN are peaceful nations and are not forcing other nations under them. Maybe the Olympic s should be in Tibet instead because they are more respectful of human rights and freedoms. I think other UN countries should pressure China to release Tibet, Taiwan and maybe even Hong Kong before the Olympics are held.
China invaded Tibet and are still there doing it by force and I am surprised that the Olympics is being hosted there considering its human rights violations against Tibet, Taiwan and HK. Although China is ahead economically and produces goods for the world, it is backwards politically by its use of force in controlling other countries such as Tibet. The world will be more at peace if nations respect each other and stop invading by wars. There should be respect for territorial boundaries. Trade and collaborations should be done willingly by choice and not by force. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Tibet#Prehistory
I am Chinese, and I do know our history like Mr. Liu. And Tibet is not China. It was part of China, just as China was part of Tibet once…through occupation. Tibet is not China.
We are cousins at best but never bothers and sisters.
There are so much fears in China. Fear of losing control of all of the protest going on all over the country, fear of all the independent talks might give Taiwan and even Hong Kong ideas. Fear of another democratic movement that will exposed the communist party’s incompetence, corruption and human rights abuse to the newly found middle class, who has been politically passive regressive for the last ten years, And if they are angry, all of the sons and daughters of little red guards who throw their family members to the wolfs during the culture revolution, there will be no one left to support the regime except those poor peasants the party tried so hard to keep their heads in the sand all these years. So much fears that another democracy movement might rise again and they will not able to contain it next time with tanks and bullets.
That is why there so many flies buzzing around with their manure breath telling you to stop commenting on their bad breath.
The Chinese Communist Party brought down the Nationalist through violent protests from disgruntle peasants and waging gorilla war fare. That is why they would never allow that same faith to bestow to themselves. So much fears when you have to constantly checking your rear view mirror for your own shadows.
I import good from China into US in hope of better livelihood for the people and give them means to seek political changes, but the communist have their hooks on me as much on them that so much so that I will not risk any chance to have their retaliation target toward the factories that I work with in China.
But knowing the pains that will cost my brothers in China, I urge all of you readers out there to boycott the goods from China to make a stern statement to them and to the world.
Boycott the Olympics, this will slap them on the face and put them to the corner with the scolding they deserve. It will be for the good of Tibet, China and the rest of the world.
I don't understand why Ethiopia is not included in the list. I don't think there is any difference between Eritrea and Ethiopia in terms of human right abuses. The human rights condition in Ethiopia has deteriorated after the 2005 election. So, please put in consider the conditions Ethiopian people are in under the leadership of dictator Meles Zenawi.
Come on, you sounds like a well-educated kind. What you really lack is knowledge of history about Tibet. You could fool Americans here who know neither where Tibet is nor what Tibetans are, but you can not fool everyone.
Consider this a fair warning to those who are planning to enter China and violate Chinese laws. Stay the h3ll out of China because you WILL be arrested and punished to the fullest extend of the law if you even so must as to raise the flag of the Tibetan rebels. Chinese people are fed up and will exercise their citizen duty to punish those who come into China and break our laws intentionally. Now you are warned.
"In addition, the author is also so ignorant when he quoted Tibet as a nation, whereas no country in this world recognizes Tibet as a nation. "
You seem to be confusing nations and independent states. Tibet is most certainly a nation, and nothing that any outsider does or does not do will change that. In particular, no amount of PRC oppression is going to make them cease to exist as a nation; on the contrary, it will tend to consolidate their national identity and harden their opposition to Chinese domination.
Because of the USA human right violations in Iraq and Afganistan, USA has disqualified herself to judge other countries on human right issues. The author of this post, in quoting US State Dept report in his discussion of China human issue, is definitely ill-conceived. In addition, the author is also so ignorant when he quoted Tibet as a nation, whereas no country in this world recognizes Tibet as a nation.
So in the end, even if ALL WESTERN viewers boycotted the games (lets be real here and assume that most people will not bother or not carry through boycotting the US companies) and refused to watch (like I am). What, in the end, will that accomplish? Other than obvious headlines stating that US or Western viewership is at an all-time low? I would hope that it would make the Olympic commission think twice before holding it in an oppressive state, but sadly I think it will just fall on deaf ears. Unfortunately China has been stacking the Olympic commission with sympathetic sponsors and spokespeople for years and finally got their way.
I just hope it all backfires and allows the world, through non-state-controlled-media, to truly see what goes on there and the many reasons to keep our money, jobs and resources far far far away from that country of poisonous oppressors.
I also can't understand how China won the privilege to hold the Olympics, given its record of terrible human rights abuses. Would we accord the same privilege to North Korea?
To feed, clothe and keep 1,300,000,000 Chinese , one quarter of humanity, healthy and happy is no easy task.
Under the circumstances I think the Chinese government is doing an exceeding good job.
If western stlye democracy is forced upon China today, great chaos will be the order of the day.
Once disintegrated, the fall out will be unimagineable.
It is in everyone's interest to help China grow and integrate into the international community and gradually bring about social reforms and democracy to the Chinese people.
As US does not condemn the violence and tragedy in the Gaza strip initiated by the Israel government, US has no right criticizing Chinese government’s any action in Tibet.
I could see why the US State Department would say China is not the worst human rights abuser, since the US private corporations do more business with China than any other one country in the world today; from Baxter to Apple; all use Chinese factories, including abuse of child labor laws.
The US supports the worst human rights viloator in the world.
I guess when you lie down with dogs that have fleas you get a dose yourself. The use of waterboarding as an interogation technique, is only one indicator the US has lowered it standards of human rights.

I can't disagree with anything the author says.

What a selfish idea to ask athletes to boycott the Olympics.
Don't politicize sports!
Athletes and Olympics have nothing to do with politics.
People with hidden political agenda will do anything, including hurting the athletes.

China has always been this bad and we pretend they aren't because they make every piece of cheap plastic that constitutes our lives.
Meanwhile, the massacres continue.
