You, Americans, remember the film called Matrix? Do you still feel the film's sensational shock? Now tell me where the shock really hits your mind. Yes. It is the gist that all humans are living a life that is simply an illusion or dream and they should never wake up to know what the true world is, not even upon the end of their life. That's now a perfect real-time story fits in for your American people. You think you have the democracy and the human rights and everyting that make you a great nation who can control and protect the world. No, you are not the ones in control, not even your US government which is, in fact, only a puppet of the super rich moneymongers. They fund the election every 4 years (and no matter which side wins, they remain the ones who give orders) and they issue your US dollars with your national debts as pawn, which means they can take control of every aspects of the US economy. With all these debts, your government is never able to pay off. What they can do is only be their servants. Now think why there are so many great presidents loved by the American people were assassinated. That's because they were too noble to humble and be their servants and they wanted to get back the real authority for the American people to decide their own destiny,i.e. the authority to issue the money. Federal reserve, is it public or governmental? No, it is a private thing. Do you know that? All your symbol of wealth, the US$ can be renounced worthless overnight by some small group of moneymongers hiding away from public vision and your government will be able to do nothing!! Now Americans, please wake up and see the truth. Your democracy and human rights... are nothing but a disguise over the truth.

you are telling the truth:

I am a Chinese living in Beijing, James is telling the truth about China. Thanks, for telling the truth, very rare and precious in these days media coverage about China.

- É o maior exportador mundial de aço e aumentou a sua produção, nos últimos três anos em mais de 40%;

- As reservas internacionais da china, superiores a USD 1,3 trilhões ( a maior do mundo), e com recursos proprios, já financiam mais de 10% do deficit americano;

- É o 2o. país em acesso à Internet;

“Hello World! And Shamed on You!”

Hello World! And Shamed on you!
Supposed not but I must remind you!
In world daylight FOO,
While the world suddenly piled up with POO”!
That the world (and U.N) must not do!
Turning earth-place into an unfortunate smelly ZOO!
As the world always DO!
That I’m going to “PROO”(prove)
To the nasty YOU! the world naive and lazy FOO!

Hello World! and Shamed on you!
1/ While Tibet had needed you!
To confront with barbarous cheenee “CRU"(i.e., cruel)”!
While you behaved as the only “POO”!
And finally left all Tibet(ans) had to “ROO”! (run )!
Like birds headed toward
Places have no more smelly “cheenoos”!
And away from the place fouled with the “monkeys do” (Tibet nation becomes a "monkeys-do" place arrogantly and barbarously invaded by China as a member of UNSC)

Hello World! and Shamed on you!
2/ While the world are made of full with “POO”!
While the world watched Khmer “ROOs”! (Rouges)
Cuting millions throats of innocents in the world daylight of their ZOO!
Called as the Killing (Fields) “FOUs”!
While you only buy the times, sit and “POO”!
And naively let cheenees “FOO”! (fool all of you)!
You, and all your world-“FOOs”! (the world fools)
No more than bunches of global “ZOO’s POOs”!
That (these fools) never know how/what to DO!
For freeing victimized innocent folks trapped in the nasty ZOO! (i.e., Killing Fields)
Laid death more than unfortunate “bird-flued” coocoos (i.e., birds)

Hell World! and Shamed on You!
3/ While you eat, sit, piss, fax, count money and never DO!
While the cheenee was heading into!
Paracel (islands) in the Pacifoo! (Pacific)
To rob islands of the unfortunate Vinoos! (Vietnam)
While you sat dumb like the only “POO”!
Shamelessly, while never did or DO!
To chase off the worst CRU(el) cheenoos! (barbarous Cruel Cheenoos)
That you supposed to DO!

Hello World! Shamed on you!
4/ While you sit, eat, piss, fax, count money and POO!
And never did or DO!
When the cheenee sits and “FOO” (fooling)
The entire kids in the U.N and UNSC ZOOs!
With the everyday filthiest cheenee veetoos! (vetoes)
To inflict deaths (and devastations) to the world ZOO!
While you suppose to evict the cheenee (i.e., the worst-of-all-worst) but U can only POO!!!
Like everybody else can DO!
While unconsciously seeing mankind coping with their never-ended global FOOs!

What is your IQ rating? the best you can do is copy & past of western propaganda. What else you can do?

Before you bash China, I advise you to look at the mirror and see how pathetic you're.

ttt:

Few thoughts to the entire world civilization:

Hello World!

Needless to say, all mankind have long known that China is definitely the-worst-of-all-worst and odorous culprit to stay in the dark to push the Khmer Rouges trained and supported by red China to murder their own Khmer innocents not very long ago in Cambodia!
And now the world has seen again Red or Bloody China has backed up the iron-fisted, bloody Burmese murdering regime volunteered-slaves and trained of China to wildly kill, kidnap, torture, and terrorize their own peace-loving, innocent Burmese citizens who only apply peaceful means to ask for freedom and democracy and no more and no less!

The world has to wake up to recognize that:
CHINA IS ONLY THE-WORST-OF-ALL-WORST, MOST DANGEROUS,VERY TREACHEROUS, MONSTROUS DEVIL OF THE ENTIRE WORLD TO RELENTLESSLY DO HARMS OF ALL SORTS AND APPLYING ALL SORTS OF FILTHY AND AGAINST-ALL-MANKIND WORKS TO KEEP GLOBALLY MURDEROUS REGIMES TO BECOME A BUNCH OF VOLUNTEERED SLAVES TO SERVE BLOODY CHINA! AND AT THE SAME TIME THESE MURDEROUS REGIMES OR VOLUNTEERED SLAVES FOR CHINA CAN HARVEST ALL WEALTH FROM THEIR OWN PEOPLE AND NATIONS FOR THEMSELVES LIKE RULING PIRATES AND ALWAYS BEING BACKED UP BY CHINA IN THE UNSC WITH VETOES IN THE FRONT EYES OF THE ENTIRE WORLD CIVILIZED NATIONS!
IN ESSENCE, THE WORLD-WITHOUT-CHINA IS DEFINITELY A BETTER, SAFER, LESS-TROUBLES AND MORE CIVILIZED WORLD FOR ALL MANKIND TO LIVE IN HARMONY!

NEEDLESS TO SAY, CHINA IS DEFINITELY WORLD-TROUBLEMAKER, AN UNCIVILIZED NATION AND NO MORE AND NO LESS, WHERE BUNCHES OF CHINESE MURDERERS VOTED-BY-NO-BODY IN CHINA HOPPED INTO POWER AND SADLY ENSLAVING THEIR OWN UNFORTUNATED 1.5 BILLIONS CHINESE PEOPLE LIKE SLAVES INDEFINITELY AND HOPELESSLY AND NO MORE AND NO LESS THAT ENTIRE WORLD HAVE SEEN FOR TOO LONG!

FOR THE GOOD SAKE, THE WORLD BY ALL MEANS HAS TO KICK CHINA OUT OF THE U.N.S.C DUE TO CHINA HAS BROUGHT SO MUCH ODOROUS AND UNCIVILIZED CHINESE-WAY OF ANIMAL-LIKE HABITS AND BEHAVIOUR INTO THE U.N.S.C AND MAKING THIS PLACE TURNING INTO A TRASH-LIKE OR GARBAGED PLACE TO FORCE THE ENTIRE WORLD TO SMELL THE ILL-SMELLING CHINA ODOR!

IN SUMMARY, CHINA REPRESENTS AN ODOROUS OBJECT OR GARBAGE-LIKE NOBODY-WANTS-TO-STAY-CLOSE CREATURE IN THIS WORLD AND FORCES THE WHOLE WORLD TO SMELL THIS ILL-SMELLING ODOUR AND SEE THIS FILTHINESS!

Needless to say, China the only nation in this world nation that kills its own citizens by mass-executions for harvesting chinese body-parts for human-body-parts transplanting businesses networks domestically and internationally to make good money for themselves! This China is the only nation in the world has this most un-civilize and animal-like way fo making money! that the entire world have seen for so many years up to now! and this kind of most barbarous Chinese-business that can only be found in China! the place of human-like monsters to exploit lives and dead bodies of their own chinese and being treated exactly as cheap as animals on thier own land!
Therefore, all civilized world citizens have to recognize that China is exactly "the-worst-of-all- worst" devil of this planet earth that we have to live with!

WHO ON EARTH CAN PROVE THE ABOVE FACTS ARE NOT TRUE? AND PLEASE DO!

Sincerely

TTT

Conscience-to-the-world:

To The Entire World including all World Leaders:

Hello World!

If U have few minutes, then here is something that U may want to know as below:

Question: “SOME POPULAR REASONS OF WHY THE WORLD CHAOS & CONFLICTS NEVER CEASE?”

A-1: “Greedy-and-bad-deeds” always are in conflicts with “good-deeds” and “greedy-and-bad-deeds”
always corrupt and easily take controls the “good-deeds”; while “good-deeds” are so hard to
preserve and easily to fade away!.
A-2: World-devils are always in conflicts with angels, and unfortunately, devils always try to trick others
by means of showing, proving others that angels are world worst devils, while the angels have no
capability to prove themselves as genuine angels to the rest of naive world-bystanders, naive
non-believers are sitting for accusing and complaining and crying, while these folks cannot protect
themselves from devastations of all sorts, caused by devils due to lacking of intelligence.
A-3: World devils have always evolved faster to do harms than angels that they can master new ways of
fighting back the evolving devils that is exactly like in the nature where germs evolve to fight new
drugs being manufactured.
A-4: World lacks of right and effective leader(s) who supposed to possess all necessary own resources
and his/their dedicated deeds such as: the real-time, harmonious, most-creative-and-long-visionary,
most-effective-and-down-to-earth mind, deeds, intelligence and evolving/mutable strategies and
resources and times, etc., to fight and/or set new plans/strategies/tactics to confront devils
physically or mentally or both.
A-5: Disturbances of own down-hearted/saddened citizens and local and global down-hearted stirrers,
Disbelievers and naives or short-tempered-and-can-do-nothing folks to join in to spoil or devastate
all feasible fighting plans against world devils and make all good-deeds growing foul.
A-6: World full with strayed and selfishness sheep/rabbits as non-cooperative nations that they can only
apply safest self-protective tactics as hiding under world-devils shadows by shying away from
world common problems and eagerly hiding away from any possible threatening, retaliation,
revenges problems that will be given arrogantly by world-devils.
A-7: World Laws and Orders and Justices have no one to take care of properly! While world-conscience
Seems has no place to stay and while world bad-deeds have been greatly prospered and constantly
being fooled by “illusionating” by devils to achieve their goals and profit themselves.
A-8: Etc.., and many, many more...
(summarized/simplified by: “Conscience-to-the-world”, 2007/10/12)

Thanks to all.

"Hello World!"

Hello world!
Wishing to tell just only you!
That you’ve always found wrong way for heading into!
As unfortunately you always DO!!!
And making the entire world just as the great wild ZOO!
Or going “COOCOO”!
(“coocoo” slang means go crazy)
While no-one wished being as a “FOU”!
(“fou” in French means crazy)
But you’ll always DO!

Hello world!
Wish someday that only you!
Will find ways getting out of (your own) “FOU”!
(“fou” French also means “foolishness” or craziness)
And finally,
self-discovered as only as a crazy “POO”!
And what now will you have to do?
...
“POO”?
...
Or (?)
...
“COOCOO”?
...
Or(?)
Only Listen? and let others do?
Well! well! well! But please do not “POO”!!!
That you again make me “FOU”!
As you always DO!!!
Again! and again!
Making the whole world “POO”!
Crazily chaos like....
In a lasting ZOO!!!

To The World:

A poem dedicated to the world:

Hello World! You must know that we are all wrong now! and you will find down that we all are in the wrong track! That’s I’m going to tell you why?

(I wish to show the world that we are all wrong! ???)
Hello world!
I wish to tell now with you!
That you’re always found the wrong way heading into!
As you always do!
And make entire world as a zoo!
Or going “coocoo”!
(“coocoo” means go crazy)
That no one wish as the “fous”
(“fous” in French means the crazies in English)
But you do!
Hello world!
I wish someday that only you!
Will find ways to get out of your own “fou”!
(“fou” French means “foolishness” or craziness in English)
As only finally self-discovered a crazy “poo”!
Now what you will have to do!
Is only to listen and please do not “poo”
That you will make me “fou”
Like you always do!

“I wish being with you”

I wish being with you, at moments while can no longer stop to cry!
I wish being with you!
Beside your comrades, friends, full with blood and die!
I wish being with you!
sharing the coldness and loneliness in several endless nights!
I wish being with you!
For collecting teardrops falling from whom who can hide and sit to pray!
I wish to sit beside!
To a saddened heart of someone having no more teardrops to cry!
I wish to serve a saddened night!
With whom with a last hope as can only sit and pray!
I also wish the sadness soon will fade away!
On the beautiful eyes of Madame Aung San Suu Kyi,
a lonely World Angel, a lonely World Heroine, an endless World Suffering Symbol
Of our mankind!
That she can only hope and cry!

This poem dedicated to Dalai Lama, the leader of the world recognized, sovereign Tibet nation suudenly pirated by chinese ruling tyrants and thieves in the naked eyes of all mankind in the daylight.

“I Wish To Share with You”

Dear Dalai Lama! I wish to share with you!
While you have no place to stay!
While Tibet suddenly is so far away!
As your beloved nation suddenly swapped by the Yellow Cobrey!
In the style of world pirates only come to stay!
Dear Dalai Lama! I wish to pray with you!
For Tibet!
And will be someday returned back and stay!
With you and all Tibetans motherland-seekers!
While:
Innocents have no place to stay and pray! (as before)
Wandering and floating like wind, like birds in heavenly blue sky!
Like Tibet citizens have no place
and chosen unwanted life
Of the world wanderers, or downhearted refugees
Night will come and night will go away!
But you still try finding a place to hide
Your tired body and mind from the summer heat, rain, snow of the sky!
But no matter how much you will want to pray!
Chinese murderers/thieves will continue wanting to stay!
In the land of Tibet, a beloved land, given from your dad yesterday!
To you to care and no longer can be held
with lonely arms but your only love!

(from: conscience-to-the-world)

P.S:

THE ENTIRE WOLRD NATIONS HAVE TO WAKE UP AND FORCE DANGEROUS CHINA TO RETURN THE SOVEREIGN WORLD-ECOGNIZED TIBET NATION BACK TO ALL TIBETIAN CITIZENS WHO HAVE BEEN SUFFERED SO MUCH AND FLOAT ALL OVER THE WORLD LIKE NATIONLESS CITIZENS AND REFUGEES HAVE NO PLACE TO STAY LIKE ALL WORLD CITIZENS CAN! THIS ODOREOUS AND UNCIVILIZED PROBLEM MUST BE STOPPED OR THE ENTIRE WORLD HAVE TO BOYCOTT RED CHINA AT ALL CONCEIVABLE MEANS AND KICKING CHINA OUT OF THE UN AND UNSC AND ALL WORLD INSTITUTIONS AND CHINA CAN LIVE WITH ITSELF IN ITS MURDEROUS CHINA LAND OF DEVILS!

HUMAN CONSCIENCE HAS TO DESCEND ON THIS PLANET EARTH AND CHASE CHINESE EVIL AWAY TO HAVE A BETTER AND SAFER WORLD TO ALL MANKIND!

Madame Aung San Suu Kyu, a Nobel Laureate, a Heroine of the mankind, an Angel of the entire world, a Democracy teacher of all mankind, A Lady of The World, a courageous Lady carrying the LANTERN OF HUMAN CONSCIENCE TO LIGHTEN UP THE WORLD DARKNESS AND MISERY

“While the World is still sleeping”

While the world is sleeping,
Outside, in the dark, where no light of conscience exists
Hungry wolves, Yellow Cobra and gobblers are wandering
While the world is sleeping,
In the dark outside, where no laws and justices are found
Due to conscience has flown away
And left the human misery behind
For the world children to cry (fool)
While the world sky is still dark
And human-like vampires, devils are gathering and playing
With deaths and human misery of
all unfortunate innocents and victimized naives
Who only could only hope and believed in miracle
But it never comes!
While the world sky is still dark and the world is still sleeping
Treachery, illusion and evil deeds have well blended
To form sugar-coated poison pills to be given
To more new naive world children to try by
the world devils outside in the dark and in the wild
Of the conscienceless killing rampages
Masterminded by all human-like vampires
While the world sky is still dark...
Human conscience can only cry!
While the world is still dark..

To all world weapon designers, inventors, researchers and developers:

NO WEAPONS THAT HUMAN-BEING HAVE CONCEIVABLY DEVELOPED IN THIS WORLD UP TO THIS TIME THAT CAN MAKE ALL ENEMIES CRAWLING IN FRONT OF YOUR FEET LIKE THE INNOCENT WORMS AND CRY FOOL TO ASK FOR YOUR MERCY AND FORGIVENESS AND FAVOURS!
EXCEPT:

THE NEWEST WEAPON AS SO-CALLED: "THE TOTAL BOYCOTTS OF ALL CONCEIVABLE MEANS AND GLOBALLY" WEAPON THAT CAN BE USED BY ALL SOLIDIFIED, UNITED COUNTRIES TO APPLY ON A ARROGANT AND DISASTROUS ENEMY OR A WORLD DEVASTATOR OR EVEN MORE THAN ONE!

THIS IS A MUCH MORE CIVILIZED AND ELEGANT AND NON-KILLING-AT-ALL WEAPON THAT WON'T COST YOU EVEN A SINGLE BULLET OR EVEN A RUSTY BOMB OR A LOW-COST HAND-GRENADE TO BE DELIVERED TO PUT DOWN AN ENEMY AND MAGNIFICALLY AND AUTOMATICALLY IT CAN MAKE OUR MONSTER OR ENEMY TO CRAWL AND WILL SERVE YOU EVERYTHING YOU DEMAND LIKE YOUR POODLE!

I wish someone to help me testing this "kill-nobody" and wondeful, most civilized weapon to kill no one but can make a bad guy or bad nation to self-transform into a good guy or a good nation volunteeredly to live nicely with the rest of the intire civilized world! That i nicknamed this weapon as the "Trasnformable weapon"!
Someone in any corner of the world should experiment this "super civilized weapon" with a monster such as: China or Russia,or even both at the same time if you wish! as suggested, and see the immediate effect as one or these both monsters will start crawling on the next morning and wiggle its or their tails at you and having fun with you!

The World Conscience:

Hello world!

If U have few free minutes, then pls. read this:

The entire world should vote and choose Madame Aung San Suu Kyi to become the second highest U.N leader in the U.N in order to work best and share all world responsibility with the present U.N leader in order to let Madame Aung San Suu Kyi to order China and its volunteered slaves Burmese ruling thugs or tyrants to learn how to behave like valueable individuals and return Burma and Tibet back to the Burmese and Tibetan citizens respectively!
Also, she and the present U.N leader can order and call in all world nations to vote to dismantle/trash the existing U.N, and U.N.S.C and re-establish or re-create the brand new U.N and U.N.S.C without the needs of the existence of the valuelessly, murderously bloody China and Russia the only valuable as the so-called world troubemakers!
In summary, the entire world should reunite together to force the U.N to trash/jeopardize itself and its useless UNSC and rebuild entirely the brand new UN and UNSC from bottom up and to make new rules, regulations and orders as to contribute by all world nations in order to be able to evict and kick out immediately all troublemakers that could hide inside the new and well-cleaned UNSC if making troubles to any nations in the world, or inflicting deaths and destructions to their own citizens such as invading and occupying lands of other nations like in Tibet, Vietnam, India, Inner-Mongolia, etc. or in Burma presently, that Red or Bloody China has done to the world in front of naked eyes of all mankind in this planet earth as an example!

This suggestion/recommendation should be sent to all world leaders and UN and UNSC as well! And Hoping the World Laws and Orders will descend on this planet earth soon!

Conscience-to-the-world :
Hello world!

If U have times then please read this:

"If you spent most of time to fulfill your obligation as to fill up your own forever thirsty pockets with money while seeing innocents who have been chased and shot to death in the daylight in Burma, in Tibet, in Darfur, in Venezuela, in Iran, in Syria, in Chechnya, in China then your filled-up pockets that seem to only keep money related to the blood of innocents in such lands! And that related directly to your efforts as too much time to focuse on money- counting while forgotten or leaving conscience being left outside the fences hundred yards away from you buddies! In other words, I wish to remind world citizens to stay away from devils and do not feed the devils to allow them to devaste their own innocents such as it is happening in Burma and/or elsewhere in this world! in order to minimize killing to be victimized by innocents worldwide! And also, pls. stop the popular habit as to dance with the Yellow Cobra as usual to reduce suffering that the Yellow Cobra of the world could continue to inflict more deaths to world innocents!

On my own, I only wish to see all Tibetans to have chance to return to live in peace and happiness in their own Tibet a world well recognized sovereign nation in the past and suddenly stolen by chinese pirates or thugs!
And China has to return Tibet nation back to Tibetans or face the entire world BOYCOTTS OF ALL FORMS: SUCH AS COMMERCIALLY, ECONOMICALLY, POLITICALLY, DIPLOMATICALLY, AND ALL POSSIBLE SORTS OF BOYCOTTS SUCH AS: BOYCOTTING ALL MADE IN CHINA PRODUCTS WORLDWIDE! AND STOP IMPORT AND EXPORT ALL RAW MATERIALS FROM AND TO CHINA AND TO LET CHINA TO LIVE WITH ITSELF IN THIS PLANET EARTH ALONE! ETC.,

I also dream all innocents in Burma to have a chance to breathe fresh air and enjoy freedom outside of all prisons in Burma, and all courageous and respectful Burmese monks can have a peaceful moment to live as free citizens without dangers of death and tortures to death in burmese prisons! and all murderous Burmese thugs can return to China for being executed as criminals for their chinese master to harvest their body-parts to feed the Chinese human-body-parts- harvesting businesses as the chinese dream as making good money in the unique chinese way of making money!

Lasstly, I wish The world should point their asses into the sky in order to be able to kiss the feet and toes of the courageous and most respectable Lady-of-the-World: Madame Aung San Suu Kyi to express admiration and appreciation and respect for her never-ending suffering and losses physically and mentally in order to teach the entire world how to live as a courageous individual like she is! The wonderful and most admirable "Angel-of-the-Entire-Planet-Earth!

Also, The world should learn how to feel ashamed themselves and condemn themselves as by slapping into their own faces each day for their cowardness while seeing Madame Aung SanSuu Kyi to be forcibly endured herself for too long without valuable assistances of any world leaders of the world and she has to absorb all terrorizing and punishing by Burmese thugs in the land of the devils Burma supported by bloody China that is not better than a hell on earth!"

"May World-Conscience Bless This planet Earth and its innocent and hopeless people! and send to hell all murderous ruling thugs and tyrants to live with hell fire forever and leave this planet earth alone!"

There is psychology of fear that if u threat any body but make it real that works wonder but if you threat and make it practical the fear and prestige both is lost.See before invasion of Afghanistan and iraq the American authority had muscle power and any threat was led the destablization of the country administartion but after Afghanistan and iraq war led the lost of american credibility. The invasion of iraq led the erosion of American trust as iraq under saddam was considered a ally of usa .but his fall led the other establishment to keep distance from the American establsihment.By this policy of bullying America lost the credibility of military power and the friend.

Patrick from NYC:

The call by Western Administrations for more sanctions against the regime in Myanmar and encouraging China and India to go along is the height of hypocrisy. The chairman of Total (France) just recently said the company wasn't going to cease operations in Myanmar. Chevron (USA) likewise said the same. Both companies are actually extracting and selling oil from Myanmar at this stage and providing the Myanmar government with much needed revenue. They will be reluctant to pull out unless their respective governments enact legislation to force them to do so. Will that happen when there is so much oil, money and larger geopolitical issues involved? Place your bets...

Boycott Russia's 2014 Winter Olympic for its human rights violation and abuse.

Russia is back to its old USSR police state.

Dom:

This is silly. First the author proposes we take away our only diplomatic leverage over China and fight with our hands behind our back. China is already responding to pressure on the Olympics and its frankly the only thing they really care about that we could tarnish. We probably will not carry out the threat, but their worries mean their working hard on diplomacy.

Second, the article seems to suggest that the feelings of the Chinese people count more than trying to save the lives of the people of Burma. That's just not an equation I can accept. If the Chinese get offended, I say let them. We mean them no offense, but it's far more important to try to prevent people from dying than it is to prevent them from feeling offended. Remember: sticks and stones may break my bones, but names would never hurt...

If there are anyone here wondering who is ttt posting such hate and insanity, this is the typical raving and ranting of a thoroughly brain-washed Falungong follower. Falungong is the evil cult that pretends to promote human rights while pushing their hate, deception, insanity and some mumbo jumbo spiritual garbage. To find out more, go to any mainstream Protestant Christian church and seek their views (no, not the CCP views). You can be sure even though Falungong pretends to speak up for the Christians in China, no undeceived Christian would associate himself/hersef with this evil cult. There, ttt, I dare you to admit it! If you have the guts.

fzdybel:

The Olympics as they are usually done, i.e. as a big tourism deal for the host country, is something we should try to get over. It stimulates a lot of excess air travel that dumps that much more carbon into the upper atmosphere. We should start thinking in terms of sending the athletes to meet somewhere, while the rest of us stay home and watch television.

This might have the added benefit of dis-inscentivizing the use of the games as a political football.

MikeB:

It's high time people started to recognize that corporations, investors, and that nest of parasites that inhabits Wall Street and Washington D.C. aren't the same sort of people refrred to as "independent businessmen" by the founding fathers. Those busoinessmen were patriots who sincerely cared about this country and their fellow citizens. Somewhere, in the past 30 years or so, those business owners-entrepreneurs were displaced by blue suited professional CEO's who load boards with toadies and pay themselves mutlimillion dollar salaries and bonuses, even if their business fail. The speculators (investors) are, if anything, even worse. They expect ever higher rates of return for money that isn't really even their's and apply pressure to those CEO's, resulting in outsourcing jobs, the purposeful sale critical weapons systems and defense technologies just to increase profits. SO you see companies selling cruise missile guidance systems, night vision technology, biological weapons labs and knowledge, our most advanced computer technology, and more. Most of this, occurring within the past 12 months, has gone to China. Those corporations and investors, even the *foreign* recipients of that technology have given hundreds of millions of dollars to American politician's and the major parties. Do a simple search on CNN, USA Toay, the Post, the TImes, and other MSM and you will find hundreds of stories on these practices. And some silly annoymous twit, here, wants to claim that "free trade" is the wave of the future. "Free traitors" is a more appropriate term for these rats in business suits. They have wrought irrepairable harm to this country and to our people. And, believe it, someday, those rats will either pay for the harm they have done or they will (more likely) flee to some new Asian home while the courts attempt to extradite them and get their money.

CHina and India are not our friends. At best, they are our temporary trading partners so long as we continue to offshore jobs and technology, invest money in their economies, educate and provide jobs for their citizens, and act as a market for their cheap goods and services. Once this ends, those countries will turn on us like rabid dogs and use that technology to harm us, all of that knowledge we have provided, right down to information about individuals and thier families, used against us. China and India are *enemy* states and it's past time we got used to it. Trade with them? Sure, but only if it is in our *national interest*. If they choose to trade with the dictators of a country like Burma, boycott them. Likewise, if an Amercian corporation uses an Indian shell company to trade with Burma (and they are and we know exactly who they are) then those corporations and the executive are no less violators of human rights, no less guilty of murder, than the soldiers in the streets of Burma shooting ordinary citizens, monks, foreign news reporters, and aide workers.

To TTT:

You are too dumb to remember that the good old USA we live in was guilty of all of the same barbaric things China is. Native Americans, slaves, slave labor, needless killings, murders, mass killings...this list goes on and on.
Learn stuff before you talk about it, dude.
China is no different than the US.
Your rant comes from hate that has nothing to do with China the country. It comes from hate of a culture. And that is hate we don't need.

Binh (Orange, CA):

I say Uncle Sam stop selling ammunition to the Burmese government. Without the ammunitions to the AR-15 or so would definitedly get the military ruler attention next time when they shoot at the monk and the civilians. Look at the picture and you see the soldiers are armed with American made weapons.

responsible american:

I thought the U.S. was supposed to be the only remaining superpower on the planet and the leader of the free world. True leadership and power require responsibility. When it comes to our dealings with China, we are being anything but responsible. We are powerless followers.

It’s not just that the Chinese government is indirectly brutalizing the Burmese people by supporting its corrupt regime, that it is directly enslaving its own people.

As the recent toy recalls here demonstrate, the corruption of the Chinese government, at all levels, is having a detrimental affect on our most vulnerable people here in the U.S.—our children. We are naïve to think that we can have "free" trade with these people and not have it affect us in a negative way.

It’s time to deal with the Chinese thug-ocrocy (and the Russians for that matter) like we dealt with the Germans and Japanese when they were the thugs on the block—kick them out of the United Nations. They have no business being on the Security Council, let alone hosting the Olympics. Since Germany and Japan are now responsible democracies, we should bring them back on to the Council to replace these thugs.

Either that or we should leave the United Nations altogether and create another international body made up of legitimate respectful democracies. Those would include: Canada and Chile in the Americas; the European Union in Europe; Japan, Australia and New Zealand in Asia; and South Africa in Africa.

That’s about it. Let the rest wallow in their ignorance and burn in hell. Now is the time to do it, while we still are the remaining superpowe, before China grows militarily and teams up with Russia to wreak more havoc on the world.

pgr88:

Boycotting the olympics in Beijing is a ridiculous idea. Didn't work for the West or East in 1980 and 1984, and was agreed by all afterwards it was a bad idea.
China DOES greatly support vicious regimes - Sudan, Myanmar, North Korea, Zimbabwe. In fact, they veiw some of these as their best friends. Let's be clear about that. You are also right that CHina cultivates a strong sense of injury and victimhood when teaching it's people about history. The Olympics is not the best way to show displeasure though.

J.Y. Cheung:

Wake up, world! Show me one single success story of sanctions, and I'll show you an unusual scholar or diplomat. With or without China's participation, why would any sane persons believe that stricter sanction will work this time around? "Non-interference" has been part of the China's foreign policies since the birth of the new Republic, it is not a practice of expediency or convenience. And one has to respect her for it. Punishing China for Burma's or Sudan's misdeed is reprehensible, hypocritical, disrespectful and just plain wrong! In the end, it will achieve nothing. There is no doubt, China can help to a certain degree. But there is no guarantee the host country will ever comply with the wishes of the western world. After all, do all your friends listen to your advices or suggestions when they are perceived to be led astray in accordance with your own ideology and belief? Furthermore, be very careful on what one may wish for. The last thing the world will ever need, is another big power world policeman and enforcer, getting used to throwing her weight around for her own strategy interests. Don't we have enough chaos already around the world with a wreaking crew of one?

C Q:

Well spoken, James.

As an aside, a strident supporter of Burma's regime is India, and there certainly is no move to extract a price from them for that.

Can you imagine if the US banned the use of Indian call centers or software development or back room processing operations until they imposed sanctions on Burma?

Why is it that China takes the heat when virtually every ASEAN country and India have declined to get involved?

There are plenty of reasons to support some kind of sanctions against China: Burma, the crackdown on human rights inside China, outsourcing of U.S. jobs, and so on.

But, let's get real about this. The U.S. lacks any moral, economic, diplomatic, and military strenght.

Let's imagine a national boycott against Walmart. First, one million workers will be sent into unemployment overnight. Then, 100+ million consumers will have a hard time finding cheap stuff. Those cheap DVDs, TV sets, toys, books, apparel, sports goods and millions of similar items will be soon replaced by things made in Brazil, India or Mexico, not in Oregon or Michigan.

If the boycott ever happens, the Chinese would probably get really angry. Then they can start dumping their dollar reserves -in excess of ONE TRILLION DOLLARS- into the global economy, causing the collapse of the dollar and thus the collapse of the American economy. Compared to that, the Great Depression would be regarded as spring break.

In such an scenario, those who advocated for a boycott would better get refugee status in Burma; otherwise, the Americans public would burn them on the streets.

Manhattan TS:

How does the whole of the Burmese revolt even begin to compare to even just those atrocities committed by Blackwater? The question is not whether China would respond to a boycott, but whether the United States is in any moral position to even consider it.

Even the USOC was aware that Washington D.C. was "too political" -- i.e. too closely representative of American foreign policy -- to be a bid city for the 2012 Olympics.

max from florida:

If China cannot be moved by petitions, why
even bother? Is our sympathy for Burma, only
symbolic? I think, we need to continue it, even
if futile. I do not want the question to Haunt
us: "where were you in regards to Darfur?"

WHERE WHERE YOU WHEN THEY WERE MASSACREEING THE
MONKS IN BURMA

China:

I think what is happening in Burma is very, very sad but just because China doesn't intervene in this, doesn't mean we should force them too.
America isn't intervening. And China's policy of non-involvement is something more counties should look at implementing. Not using this method is what got us into the mess we are in the Middle East.

There are other ways to handle the situation in Burma. Hoping someone else will do it, as you are doing is not going to save lives in Burma.

The Chinese have a saying. "The man who waits for roast duck to fly into him mouth, waits a very, very long time."

Anonymous:

Seeing hypocrisy in a human rights-based foreign policy is easy. Pursuing a foreign policy based on human rights is always fraught with contraditions and inconsistencies. Finding such a foreign policy at all is much more difficult. We might even want to try it sometime.

The 'it would make the Chinese mad' argument could be restated as: business is good on both sides so don't rock the boat. Hmm...perhaps, but we just might be hearing from some people who aren't in the boat. (And whom Mr. Fallow's coverage ignores anyway.)

Mr. Fallows said: "I am constantly amazed, and I think most Americans here feel the same, by how little overt anti-Americanism I encounter in China."

Yes, that's because like you they tend to go on guided tours and not speak Chinese and get the rosy tourist view. It's a nice tour aint it? I get the distinct impression that:

1) Mr. Fallows does not speak Chinese
2) Mr. Fallows has gone on tours of China and talked through translators to Chinese people but has not worked either deeply nor very long in China.
3) Mr. Fallows has never worked directly for a Chinese organization.

Yes, Mr. Fallows is impressed with the development in China, as is anyone when they first visit Shenzen or any of the newer cities. However, if he had done even one of the above three items, let alone all of them, I suspect he would have a rather more balanced perspective in his writing.

FYI - the kind of anti-Americanism you run into while working in China for a Chinese company is subtle, but also uniquitous and breathtaking in its virulence. It is an ugly thing--something we should understand but not stoop to reciprocate.

I don't think we should boycott the Beijing Olympics because it would hurt our own kids, who have worked so hard, from a chance to realize their dreams of going to the Olympic Games.

Ryan:

Boycott the 2008 Olympic Games? Does anyone here know what the idea of the Olympic is? Please look it up before you participate in this conversation.

Odie:

So the Burmese junta is slaughtering its own people? How typical for Asia where governments have no regard for human rights. They cane people, shoot them, hang them, cut off their limbs and regularly commit other acts of primitive savagery. And those hell-holes are rewarded by American business with outsourcing and manufacture of cheap trinkets, cheap because the Asians work like ants, with no workers' rights as in civilized countries. We should stop dealing with the bastards. I'd rather pay more so that a fellow American can keep his job and I'm dead sick of seeing "Made in China" on everything. Screw China.

David:

Well, I fail to see what some people running races, throwing heavy balls and swimming laps has to do with man's continuing inhumanity to their fellows. But then, I don't understand the concept of UN sanctions, either.

I think a better strategy would be to increase import tariffs and/or lower yields to international bond customers. Who else would buy their goods (in quantity) and who else has a quality investment vehicle available? I don't see anyone rushing to buy the Somalian treasury's paper or anywhere else for that matter.

So, let's run our races and wave our flag and, meanwhile, squeeze them where it hurts. That might see a change of heart and some better behavior.

pappy:

"Our long drive over the last 25 years should earn us success in the world, and the bastards simply won’t give it to us. We cannot trust them, because they will never accept us.”

So what if the Chinese think ill of us? Their economy is dependant on a hugh trade surplus with the U.S. and they just don't have the option of severing their economic ties to America. So I say boycott, spit in their eye, snub, and generally give China the cold shoulder. They will eventually get over it.

Chinese Professor Li:

“evil Burmese” are just most American writers would like to use, if he knows Asian culture well, he would not have used such words.

During the colonial period, nobody would say “evil western colonial powers” and that’s because most of the writers were White. They captured many African nations and they would tell these slave nations that they were doing them a big favor. These western colonial powers provided work for these slaves without which most of these slaves would have died in poverty anyway.

James Fallows may have a lot of knowledge of Asia but he definitely not an Asian. I would give James Fallow 65 marks out of 100 for understanding Asian culture. He still has 35% to learn about Asian culture.

dan:

a very thoughtful essay by a writer with firsthand knowledge whose work i have read and admired through the years.

since the burmese military leaders live in their own isolated area of the country, how about an F-16 strike on their compound to take care of these bastards once and for all.

that certainly wouldn't offend chinese sensibilities about their great country in which they crush democratic dissent (i.e., tienamien square 1989), imprison journalists, prohibit women from having more than one child and routinely execute people after kangaroo court trials (if there's any trial at all) for petty offenses.

i hope to see mr. fallows carrying the olympic torch into beijing in 2008.

agunness:

Just one small point,James.

You mention the Chinese policy of "non-interference".
One of the great tragedies of the Iraq war is that it has scared everyone (global power) from acting, especially unilaterally. Nobody wants to get bogged down in any foreign intervention like the US in Iraq. Look at Darfur.

Jack:

I agree prudence and caution are warranted - however, China is actively trying to gain hegmony over us as seen by their Hacker attack last year of the Pentagon servers and their attempts to buy 3COM to find out our defense secrets - we need to start buying less from them - slowly gradually until our trade with them is a surplus. We don't need to give them a boost anymore - we need to erase our own trade defecit by thoughtout policies not wait until the dollar collapses and the international currency markets make the dollar worthless,

Charlie:

James, please think about what U.S.A has done in Mideast and Iraq! It is Usa who had been supporting Saddam and Israel for its national interests! Politics is ugly, so is James.

agunness:

Where did you dig up this relic Kin-ming Liu.
I know China and I know China of today. I have never heard such crap.
When you live among the Chinese people they think that the US,Europe etc is some Utopia. They get this idea because everyone has access to TV and American videos and can access the internet.

But I have never seen so much food as I have seen in China.Meals are simple but nutritous. And the people are the friendliest I have met in my world travels. And I have lived in some of the poorest areas in China.

I am not a rich man,and when I am sick, I go to the hospital. It costs me 10 rmb ($1.25)for a visit. Some medicines can be expensive, but over-the-counter,I would spend about $1.

For foreigners,we are always biased that we want the best, so Taiwanese and foreign doctors will drain your pocket.

I cannot speak Chinese. I have been in four polices cases there, all minor, and I have been treated very well.

So don't give me this nonsense about chinese authoritanianism.

Most of my friends there are Chinese. We party on Fridays. We sing Karaoke. Every weekend, we are out sightseeing. And we all work hard.
But they always have negative comments about the Government, yet they all agree it is getting better (even if slowly). All are planning to travel even though they admit passports are very difficult to obtain unless for business.

Six months ago, when the US started this "Made in China" scare,I noted that the plan was to ruin the Beijing Olympics,by scaring American tourists.
They cannot do it.There are more Americans in China than any other Westerners.

Europe and Russia love China. If the US boycotts, nobody will miss them and there will be less drug related medal incidents .

America believes in threats and Use of force. China is engaged in quiet diplomacy, and let us note that the Chinese are not working unilaterally but with nations interested in a best solution for Myanmar.

America is just waiting for China to get involved militarily so they can say they Chinese are on the
move with arms.

Unless the UN authorizes a boycott, sanctions or other actions, the Chinese can only try as many diplomatic efforts as possible. Unilaterally of course, they can use their economic clout to try to arrest change.

If we continue to talk about an Olympic boycott, you may find that the only loser will be America,
and I am not talking about medals

tenlime:

Some of the comments here are utterly amazing - "don't threaten . . . unless you actually intend to send in the Marines", "the entire civilised world shd boycott . . .", " . . boycott as a matter of principle . . ", ". . . moral duty to . . .".
Since when have words such as "threats" became acceptable in "civilised" society, a moral duty and a "principled" thing to do?
What parental upbringing teaches that issuing "threats", bullying, blinkered self-righteous condemnation of others are the ways to get things done? Is it any wonder that humankind will always have conflicts and wars? When will we each take a mirror and have a good look at what we see there?

Susan:

We get it; the Chinese have no idea what has been going on in the world-except what their govt. chooses to tell them. I agree that the US should let other nations take the lead in protesting for once. Let someone else step up. What is going on is dreadful. But it is someone else's turn to lead.

And if China can't see that what is going on in Burma is shameful, then shame on them.

Kathy Smith:

Chinese people do not see the world in isolation, they feel that slaughter by Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan is many times worse and a crime against humanity, than what is happening in Burma.

Rasmuncher:

Applying direct sanctions to Burma is pointless, there are a hundred ways for the Burmese Generals to get around the issues of the sanctions, the only one that might casue them heartburn is the travel bans but then, will they want to go to the US anyway?

Direct supply sanctions will only affect the poorest as the Generals who will continue to extract their pound of flesh no matter where the trade is coming from.

Applying pressure, real economic pressure to the Chinese may cause them to apply corresponding pressure to the Burmese Generals. China is the largest trade partner with the Burmese, most of which is in the hands of the Generals yet this is a small percentage of the trade between China and the US. The US could add a levy that adds 10 times the trade value between Burma and China until they apply appropriate pressure.

kenvon:

USA had invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. Thousands of innocent children, women and men have been killed in that course.

Do you still think that American has a moral duty to tell china what to do or for that matter the authority in myanmar how to behave ??

Steamboater:

The most important thing to China then is saving face. How in the world can they save face when that face is bloodied with the brutality in Burma and Darfur which they've aided? Boycott the Olympics in China. It's the right thing to do and in this world where there's so much wrong, including our own government's reckless war in Iraq, people arond the world need to know that the United States is starting to get its conscience back; China isn't the only country that needs some face saving. If our government doesn't declare a boycott of the China Olympics, the American people can individually decide not to attend these games, and that's all the Oylmpics are--games--that are held at the expense of Burma and Darfur. If the Chinese people are incensed by this, it's about time they got incensed about something. It just might wake them up to the rot at the heart of their government.

Disappointed reader:

This web site has an amazing array of commentators, all wiggling overtime to excuse China's Communist Party all of its sins and to help it to duck, dodge, or avoid the
"Freedom First, Olympics Second" campaign and Coalition.

They [Communists] are killers. They are totalitarian enemies of freedom. The Chinese pro-democracy movement is a perfectly upright cause, in the best tradition of standing up for liberty in its battle with tyranny.

Commentary at this web site sinks to a dingy low of apologists, making excuses for Communist China. That is aid and comfort to China's despotic Communists, dictators, tyrants and thugs.

Disgusting. Pls. refresh yourself, or see for the first time, about the Freedom First, Olympics Second Coalition. Refer to http://www.ntdtv.com/xtr/en/2007/09/27/a_51245.html

Bengt-let me tell you, your comment about Hosni Mubarak, being, as you call him a "tyrant" has GOT to be one of THE MOST stupid, misinformed comments I've seen on these blogs in a long, long time. Mubarak just happens to be one of the greatest fighters against terrorism, who has worked tirelessly on peace in the ME, and who is the greatest ally of the U.S. in this region-Egypt deserves every bit of the 2 billion dollars a year we give them, AND THEN SOME. To call him a "tyrant" shows just exactly how naive your knowledge base really is, because you've really swallowed that drivel that Egypt is "violating" human rights, haven't you? You really do, don't you? And I'll wager, you've never been to Egypt, have you?

I will tell you THIS-I'd take a THOUSAND Hosni Mubarak's over just about any other leader in the world, and that includes the west! Mubarak abjectly REFUSES to let Egypt turn into a fundamentalist state-which is exactly why he had to stomp on the Muslim Brotherhood, put them all behind bars, they HAVE VIOLENT LINKS TO TERRORISM, THEY HAVE MURDERED, IN THE NAME OF ISLAM, AND HAVE DIRECT LINKS TO AL-QAEDA, AMONG OTHER TERRORIST LINKS-they were directly linked to the assassination of Egypt's PM back in the 40's, and were absolutely wreaking havoc in Egypt with the insurgency in the 90's, murdering Christians, and other minorities, until Mubarak did the right thing and locked them up. I support HB's actions ONE THOUSAND PERCENT-no civil rights to a group that wants to radically transform Egypt into something it is not-HB and his Goverment UNDERSTAND THIS-YOU CAN'T GIVE TERRORIST GROUPS LIKE THE BROTHERHOOD ANY RIGHTS UNTIL THEY BREAK ALL LINKS TO TERRORISM, TERRORIST ACTS, AND QUIT THEIR ATTEMPTS TO TURN EGYPT INTO A FUNDAMENTALIST STATE! The Muslim Brotherhood is a terrorist group HELLBENT ON IMPOSING FUNDAMENTALISM IN EGYPT. Mubarak (and hopefully his son, Gamal) AIN'T GONNA LET THIS HAPPEN, OR THEY WILL DIE TRYING TO PREVENT IT!

So Bengt-before you go spouting mindlessly about "tyrants" get your facts straight first!

Francis Piron, Ph.D.:

Thank you for enlightened comments. From my perspective, and some experience as an academic in China and with Chinese, I see it somewhat differently. Clearly, this is the first time in history, save for geographically tiny Singapore, perhaps, that an impoverished nation is on the verge of becoming a world power within a quarter century. Clearly, the "New China," while powerfully muscled, lacks the international, political maturity of other international powers with more experience. Also, consider China's path: With the Tian An Men "incident" barely 20 years old, how can China credibly advise the Myanmar thugs on handling peaceful, democratic public rallies? With the on-going, forced relocation of thousands, if not millions of rural and poor urban citizens, how can China credibly lead Zimbabwe in dealing with its own citizens? With its handling of Tibet and Tibetans, along with Uygurs in the Xingiang, how can China credibly lead the Sudanese government in its handling of Darfur? Etc.
The issues, in my opinion, is that, while now able to flex its international muscles, China lacks credibility in most areas even remotely dealing with the rights that men have come to expect. Thus, and until that enlightenment shows up, China will have to remain perceived as a provider of cheap products, technology, and whatever appears to be short-term profit. It lacks the standing of a more mature, experienced nation. As an early 20th century Chinese writer plainly put it: "We don't respect ourselves, how can we respect others?"

Bengt Larsson:

If a tyrant can get American support by having an America-friendly policy, then there are likely to be more tyrants in the world, not less, although they will be America-friendly tyrants.

American support (with weapons and money) for the tyrants in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, as well as in Pakistan, makes it hard to believe there is any genuine American caring about tyranny in Burma. Some tyrannies are supported, while others are undermined, according to self-interest.

Gentry:

I have a real problem with this. If their government lies to the populace that's their problem.

The communist government of China is every corrupt, and their policies of "non-interference" are so much claptrap given they invest with regimes the rest of the world finds abhorrent.

In the UN, China never solves problems with the world, instead it is the cock-block superpower. When has China ever voted to do anything about any bad human rights situation? Never anything of any significance that I've seen.

They undervalue their currency and use it as a national policy to steal jobs and wealth from US citizens, meanwhile our government is too busy lining their pockets with corporate lobbying money to actually care all that much.

I'd be very happy if the US boycotted the Bejing Games over Burma or any of about a dozen other good reasons to do so.

I don't know how so many people have fallen into this Nixonian trap that somehow paying off the communists will make them nice people, but the reasoning is deeply flawed.

I have worked on several of the Olympic games and have studiously avoiding doing so on these games. Some of us actually do have ethics that go beyond greed and convenience.

arrabbiato:

Hey, you all are missing the relevant point here-there is no "linkage" between China and Myanmar-there's just Myanmar, with the worthless and totally out of touch, irrelevant irritant Aung San Sui Kyi (yeah, that's right! that's what I said!) who sits there in her self-imposed house arrest, casting off her family in England completely, and living large off her book royalties, quite unlike the Burmese all around her, meanwhile Myanmar marches on, and has made some real progress on the economic front, life is better for the Burmese than it was 10 years ago, moreover, whatever else you want to say about Myanmar, one thing you can't say: they aint' got NO al-Qaida there, no bombings, no targeting of tourists unlike its neighbor to the south, Thailand, (which is also ruled now by junta, and no one says a dam n word about THEM), unlike Indonesia, Malaysia, and all the other SE Asian countries-Myanmar is a gorgeous country, Inle Lake one of the most beautiful and exotic spots in the world, and I, for one, intend to make a visit there, again, hopefully within the next 6 months!

Boycott, I don't THINK so! Just exactly what is that going to accomplish to better the lives of the Burmese, huh? Far better to sign up for a tour of Myanmar, or make plans for independent travel (totally safe) and then you can do some actual constructive GOOD for the Burmese-rather than just listening to wild speculation on the internet about the state of things there-and trust me, there are many in that country who don't want you to know that things are really not that bad there!

Timothy Ryan:

So let me get this straight: because the Chinese government doesn't allow its own people to understand what's really going on in Burma (and 50,000 internet censors help on this matter) and the crimes going on in Burma are a matter of how the blinkered Chinese public perceives them (I love especially the fact that the Chinese really believe that we bombed their Embassy in Belgrade on purpose) we should let the government off the hook? I wonder if Mr. Fallows would favor a muzzling of the press and continuation of Bush policies in Iraq on the basis of the US somehow making economic progress and securing oil wealth, and above all, promoting pride in the United States. China is becoming a fascist country (as is Russia) and apologists like Fallows are facile, shallow, and essentially anti-democratic.

I couldn't have articulated the thesis better than Mikeb. In retrospect, it's just too bad that we didn't boycott the Olympics in Hitler's Nazi Germany. We could have made the same excuse then that's being made today.

-- "But the crux of their argument should be: Welcome to the big leagues! This is the kind of responsibility you take on when you have more influence in the world" --

If China should help depose the current Burmese government for violent suppression that killed dozens or maybe even hundreds as some would speculate, then wouldn't it make sense for China to also to try to bring down the Israeli government for killing thousands of Lebanese in its indiscriminate bombing campaign only a year ago?

Some people's hatred for Bush supercedes everything. They will seize any opportunity to bash him, even if it means defending totalitarian states and military juntas. More Bush haters should have gone out and voted last election. You people live in a democracy, you are responsible for the governemnt you elect. Well, at least he is out of office in little more than one year. Can people say that about the officials in China or Burma? If China or Burma or any other country wants to boycott America, it is their choice. I am not going to let that fear or the past mistakes of my country force me to stay silent about what is happening in China.

Why is someone bringing Thailand into this conversation? Most people are angry with China because it blocked a United Nations resolution that might have provided effective international pressure on the Burmese government, its subsequent inaction and political theatrics just reinforce our disgust with it.

Userf:

As I have read, China is only the number two trade partner with Burmer, and Tailand is the number one. Then why has no one asked Tailand to put pressure on Burmer and get involved? When it comes to China, there seems to be a double-standard for the simple reason that China is still a socialist country. As a matter of fact, China now is more capitalist than most of these oldest capitalist countries in the world, and China's current leadership-selection is collective and meritocratic. What is so wrong by choosing a country's leaders based on merits? What is so good by wasting tons of money to choose a leader who is popular simply because he/she knows what to say. No matter how you look at it, meritocracy is the least corruptible and the most logical way of selecting a country's leadership.

"A lot of the comments about China indicate how little most Americans actually know about the country." Mr. Fallows is absolutely correct. I am always amazed at how surprised most people are when they come here. The overall image of China in the media (and the WAPO) is often not very accurate. Without arguing about every detail, two quick points. Every Chinese is not a spy as MikeB suggests, he is probably glad to hear this! And there are people in wheelchairs, and some places, especially new places have ramps. But it is an old and still developing country, so there is a long way to go.
In terms of the Olympics, Mr. Fallows is correct. I am an American living and teaching in Beijing, and a boycott will only make many Chinese think that opening to the world is a bad idea. It will be seen as an example of American Imperialism and bullying. And I suspect that the vast majority of the world would not join a boycott movement.
If one wishes to boycott the Olympics because of a countries actions or inactions globally, then will America's invasion of Iraq permanently exclude it? Shouldn't Britain be disallowed the next Olympics because of it's activities in Iraq? Do Americans and Brits really think that other nations can't produce a long list of human rights violations that they are responsible for?
America seems to be going through a period of heightened xenophobia and isolationism. (Though, hopefully not yet affecting a majority of Americans!). It is disturbing to see this, and some of the intemperate language and exaggerations in the posts reflect this idea.
Boycotting the Olympics seems to me to be a non-starter. I suspect that there is little real support for the idea among most of the public. And that most of the politicians who are raving about it are merely posturing, knowing that it will have no impact on the real world. It is an ugly habit, to make meaningless international threats purely for local political consumption!

Distill this essay and it is nothing more than an apologist statement for the thugs ruling in Bejing, and at the root of that apology is the eagerness to make a dollar on the backs of politically enslaved people. Immediately after the Burmese junta's brutal crackdown on the peaceful protestors, these apologists have been flooding the internet. Ahh, the blessing of an education. It gives some people the vocabulary to defend the indefensible with the same eloquence employed by used car salesmen selling lemons. Do these people think their cheap words will erase all the images we have witnessed these past few days? Boycotting the Olympics will do nothing? At minimum it will show the leadership in China and Burma that we are willing to give something up in the name of freedom and human rights. It will comfort the Burmese people as they grieve their dead. Giving up the Olympics is nowhere near the sacrifice of the brave men and women of Burma, but it is better than doing nothing, and a lot better than doing nothing and trying to sound loft about doing nothing.

If the democratic government take no action, then individuals should consider taking action on their own and commercially boycott the Olympics. Say no to purchasing Olympic paraphernalia, traveling to China for the Olympics, and watching the games on tv.

AJ _ I think you had better go check the FBI reports on espionage, then. H1-B workers are commonly assigned to work on Defense Department contracts, even "top secret" contracts. There is even a special provision in the H1-B law that *extends* the time of an H1-B visa for workers doing defense related work! YOU go check you facts before blathering utter nonsense!

Scott:

Does anyone seriously believe that our boycott of the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow brought about the downfall of the Soviet Union, or even caused them to withdraw from Afghanistan? All it accomplished was to destroy the dreams of a bunch of American athletes who had spent years training and sacrificing to bring honor and glory to their country. Then four years later, athletes from the USSR and Eastern Europe got to experience the same disappointment when they were forbidden to travel to Los Angeles.

Innocent bystanders, whether they be Olympic athletes or everyday Chinese or American citizens, should not be used as pawns in games between superpowers. That's what we have diplomacy for.

V. Yun:

Who cares about Burma? Does anyone 'really' cares about the people of Burma? Also, who 'really' cares about Beijing Olympic anyway? James, do you really cares about the people of Burma? Let us forget this meaningless discussion starting with me. If we do anything, U.S of A will be called as a big bully, imperialist...etc.

Cheers,

AJ:

Re - MikeB

H1B workers do not get clearance to top-secret defense works. know your stuff before you decide to slander someone.

But then, this isnt the 1st time we are crossing paths, is it. You had the same old whines a few months ago. I hate to get personal, but you didn't get displaced because of a cheaper H1B, you got displaced because you are a lunatic...

Re- this discussion;

I am an Indian and I find it deplorable that the world is sitting by while people are being such cruelly treated. India and China are the countries closest to Burma and I do not like the fact that my democratically elected government is acting so selfishly in its pursuit of Energy from Burma. Having said that, If India did pull out from their dealings with Burma, China, the US and Russia amongst others would quickly step in to fill the void. Methinks, rather than boycotting the games, the UN should impose sanctions on any dealings with the Junta. But its not practical (like pre-invasion Iraq) and their oil-for-food program.

SD:

There have been interest groups--especially those would benefit from a radicalized China, thus garnering long-term funding for these advocates during the conflicts--that have been argument for the boycott of the 2008 Games. However, the US decision (Bush Administration) may well be a result of its domestic political contentions to fulfill the need to demonstrate that the lame duck could be tough with another power despite all its problems elsewhere (Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Afghanistan....), unrelated to the expressed intent of pushing the junta off the stage in Myanmer.

JRLR:

I find your arguments very compelling, Mr. Fallows. They seem to me to serve US interests well.

BB:

Mr. Fallows, the condemnation of the world against the Junta has led to absolutely nothing. China has also failed to do nothing. I'm not sure your advice about encouraging China to the pressure on the Burmese leadership will amount to much. Why would they want a democratic Burma, when they are just as oppressive? If anything, it's in their favor to have the Junta in power. As for how they look to the world, I doubt this is a burning concern. The world did nothing during Tianemen and China looked pretty bad then. They also didn't seem to care when the world condemed their actions. Maybe a slap in the face is what they need to wake them up to the world's displeasure with their foreign policy. Ultimatums may not move China, but diplomacy hasn't done much to move them either.

rodeoclown:

Chinese leaders don't respond well to "outright" threats. Agreed.
But they also don't respond well to subtler pressures. Should the U.S. simply ignore China's lack of political, religious and intellectual freedom?

moe:

the important thing is to do nothing, this way the american $ interest overseas is protected...

stocks/dollars are worth more than foreign souls....

Gates:

As one who has live in and among the beautiful people of Burma, we need to do all we can to influence China. If not going to the Olympics hit them hard then that's was we do. What's a few Olympic medals in the face of intolerance? How can ours and other athletics, as well as, the enormous amount of corporations that sponsor such an event do so knowing China's support for the "evil Burmese junta"?

As far as the Chinese people taking it the wrong way, well welcome to the big game of global politics. I'm sorry if they get their feelings hurt. I can't imagine that if the majority of countries stood behind us that the Chinese wouldn't look to their own country to see what was wrong as oppose to looking at all of us.

Anonymous:

So many of these people beating the drum for boycotting the Olympics clearly have never spent any time in China. I am an American living in Beijing studying Mandarin. I also happen to be a Republican and a foreign policy hawk who favors a resolute and clear-eyed American strategy vis-a-vis China. I have no illusions about the benevolence of the Chinese Communist Party. Nor do I have any patience for brutal, dictatorial regimes like the one in Burma. If it were practicable, I think a little shock-and-awe would do the Burmese junta a world of good. However, Mr. Fallows is absolutely correct when he says that a U.S. boycott of the Olympics would be a profound affront to the Chinese people. Our quarrel is with the Chinese government, not the Chinese people. And since we're talking about an authoritarian government, they are not the same thing. The Chinese people are definitely susceptible to conspiracy theories about U.S. intentions (i.e., the Belgrade embassy bombing). But Mr. Fallows is right to point out that the Chinese people manage to have a very friendly attitude to Americans living amongst them nevertheless. I have received nothing but warmth and generosity from the Chinese people wherever I've traveled here. I have also seen how important the Olympics are to those same people as a symbol of their tremendous hard work and sacrifice to build a better country out of the ashes of Maoism over the past 28 years. For better or worse, China is a great power and the US-China relationship is too important to throw away on symbolic stunts like boycotting the Olympics. Mr. Fallows is absolutely right that a boycott will not get the Chinese government to change course, but it will make the majority of Chinese hate the U.S. for robbing them of face and respect, treating them as naughty schoolchildren. Mr. Fallows is also correct that China's international reputation is very important to China's oligarchs and there are other ways to shame them into acting short of the "nuclear option" of sullying the Beijing Olympics.

berry:

Speaking of human rights...

China is a monster, a thousand times bigger than Burma.

And yet, no one has suggested boycotting the Olympics or cutting on trade, in order to force China to stop its human rights violations.

***

By the way...

After Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, Fallujah, Haditah, the clandestine prisons across Europe, and so many atrocities carried out in recent years, the United States and its allies should are in no position to speak about human rights.

So, I disagree with Mr Fallows: any attempt by the USA or other western countries to boycott the Olympics would not be received as an act of hostility but an act of rampant hypocrisy... and then laughed at.

Anonymous:

"I don't suppose threatening China will have much success, but what else are we to do?" That is exactly the point for NOT threatening China. To run about taking ineffective action, especially when you know beforehand that it's pointless, is foolishness.

One of the central tenets of diplomacy is to avoid categorical statements. In short, you don't threaten to send in the Marines, unless you actually intend to send in the Marines.

This is neither the time nor the place for bluffing.

All of the world sees the problem. It's time for the other players on the world stage to stand up and take care of this one, while we work to resolve our problems in the Middle East.

jhbyer:

Thanks for speaking truth to WaPo.

JREED:

This whole olympics boycott argument is silly. There is no way that American and Chinese corporate entities are going to allow a boycott. Can you imagine the protest in the U.S. should Walmart should lose its surfeit of Chinese products, products produced at a price point western manufacturers can't match and one to which Americans are addicted?

Tony Gillotte:

The plain and simple fact of the matter concerning Burma is that most western media have not the foggiest idea of what is going on inside the country.

What they depend on are the reports from a few aging students living in northwestern Thailand who battled the Burmese troops in the streets of Rangoon in 1988.

The result is that they live in the Chiang Mai area of northwestern Thailand making discreet phone calls to family and friends who relay what they consider the news of the day.

What is never reported, however, is that Burma has been a cauldron of seething ethnic enclaves since 1948 when Aung Sang was its leader. Ever since they gained their independence from Britain, they have wished their own independence from the Rangoon government.

Not even the most pro-protest groups can dispute this contention. Ask the Muslim groups in the southwest whether they want to come under the control of Aung Sang Su Kyii? Ask the Kachin? Ask the Karen or the Karenii? Ask the Shan?

The answer is clear, just as in Iraq, none of these groups would stay together very long if the military regime graciously agreed to another democratic election and, lets say, Aung San Suu Kyii were to win.

While Aung San Su Kyii has displayed admirable courage over the years, she has not come forth with an economic plan or form of government that might appeal to the diverse constituencies.

Apparently, it will be the task of leaders yet to come, to figure out how to appeal to the common nationhood of Burma, and to its various ethnic elements, to find a power and natural resource sharing arrangement that they can all support.

And as long as Singapore, Malaysia, China, and India want to gain access to Burmas vast reserves of natural resources, all the visits by UN officials will amount to nothing.

Finally, until Aung San Suu Kyii makes some declarations to reflect this situation and proposes an alternative plan, she will remain a prisoner in her own house and her own inflexible rhetoric.

Omelas:

Yes, they think so well of us that they put lead and poison into everything they export to us.

And they have no idea what their country does in Tibet either, I'm sure.

All your "innocent naive good-hearted dumb-as-dirt Chinese."

And their eagerness to go into Sudan has nothing to do with the uranium deposits there either.

Because letting them into the WTO sure had a "normalizing" and "democractic" effect on what is still a totalitarian communist state building up nuclear arms and propping up despotic regimes around the world.

Right.

Boycott the Genocide Olympics.

Sponsors too.

Have a spine!

La Russophobe:

China isn't the Buremese junta's only friend -- Russia is too. Russia has promised to provide the junta with a nuclear power station, just as it is doing in Iran, and it has opposed the international effort to impose sanction on Burma.

Interestingly, Russia has just recently been awarded the Winter Olympics for 2014. It's one thing to say the world shouldn't drop out of games that have already been awarded, but where was Mr. Fallows when Russia was being considered for the games. And for that matter, China?

Even if Fallows is right, far more should have been done to prevent these two rogue states from getting the games in the first place.

The only serious step he can suggest to deal with the current problem is bribing the junta to leave the country. Telling the Chinese, or the Russians, they're going to "look bad" if they don't do the right thing is hardly likely to be effective.

There is a fine line between prudence and cowardice. I'm afraid Mr. Fallows has crossed it.

KK:

Right on, MIKEB! We should stop importing anything from China and India, including people and outsourced services! Why stop at that? We should stop importing anything from anywhere else! If if they do not want anything from US in return, well, fine!! If we have to sell to maintain solvency, well, we can force them to buy from us at gun point!! We have a huge all-American military after all.

No no, of course we will not turn into another North Korea. Why, we are Americans! Why, we can always print more currency notes and hand a bundle to every American household whenever we feel the economic pinch by cutting off all trade.. That would work well, I think. Simple solution, see?

Bentley:

It is indeed strange for Mr. Fallows to suggest boycotting China's Olympics for the atrocities committed by another country, Burma, however much the countries may be allied. When the United States boycotted the Moscow Olympics, it was because of USSR's direct invasion of Afghanistan, and not because of any human-rights atrocities committed in neighboring countries such as East Germany, over which USSR had more direct influence than does China over Burma. And what about USA's friendship with some oil-rich countries where a rape victim can, by Sharia, be stoned to death as a public spectacle whereas the rapist is given a few lashes?

MikeB:

How right you are. What value are the lives of a few tens of thousand brown skinned (and minority!) people when there are profits to to made. Mr Fallows, cease inventing excuses for the globalizers. China and India both sell weapons systems to the Burmese government. When was it? Two weeks ago, that India sold attack helicopters to Burma? Both countries have taken millions of jobs from this country, stole of technological secrets, are responsible for most criminal identity theft, and host private data banks that are completely illegal in this country. Did you know that Amercian companies, with a simply phone call or fax, can gain access to information on an employee and their family? Did you know that *commonly* layoff lists are assembled, based on the health costs of dependents of employees. Little Timmy has childhood cancer? You're fired! Of course you knew that and it's stored in India, completely beyond the reach of U.S> laws, and used all of the time by compnaies and criminal syndicates. The Chinese have access to our latest defense technologies, our most advanced shou;lder fired missile, our stealth technology, the *plans* for the B1, B2, and stealth fighter....and the knowledge of how to defeat that technology. Every single "guest worker", over here on H1-B visas, is cleared by the Chinese governmented, most are members of the army or some other Chinese government agency and they steal everything that isn't nailed down and send it home. Their Indian counterparts are the ultimate "free traders". They don't steal for their government, they steal for themselves, for what they can sell it for. That underwater missile the Iranian's tested? It was under development in the U.S. It was *sold* to Iran by a former H1-B defense worker from India. *MOST* of the really serious identity theft, that which resultsd in people loosing everything, is a direct consequence of people working for Indian data banks selling that information. I submit, only some corporate owned hack, someone who would place profits before country, before human life, would be opposed to a boycott.

So, excuse me! Let's not just boycott the Olympics, let's cut all trade with China and with India. Let's get serious about employing American workers and ensuring the security and survival of this country. Tax the snot out of goods and services that are produced as a result of outsourcing. Let's add duties and fees and taxes and fines. Let's eliminate H1-B, L-1 and every other guest worker visa that results in a job loss for any American worker. (And, just to place things on a level field, let's add special taxes and fees to those jobs that make them at least 50% more expensive for an American corporation really needing a "guest worker"). Take that money and place it in a special fund to educate/train an American worker to fill that position as soon as possible. That is the excuse used by coimpoanies for hiring these foreign workers in the first place, so you can rest assurred that they would be just delighted with the prospect of having Amercian workers available for those jobs.

And, let's add taxes to any investment that results in outsourcing. These social parasites, speculators, have done untold harm to this country and instead of giving them tax breaks, we ought to be talking about making them pay for the harm they do. Additional taxes are the least punative thing I can think of. Imprisonment and executon by hanging would be more appropriate, as far as man of us are concerned, so you can think of this as "meeting you in the middle". Boycott the Olympcs, cut all trade ties with China, execute U.S. corporate officers that do business with them or with Burma or other countries on an embargo list.

What about the Saudi? Egypt:

Everyone is crying foul about Burmese! What about the people in Saudi, Egypt, Palestine?

Indiana David:

Excellent points, James! If the last six years has taught the U.S. anything, it's that boycotts, sanctions, threats and other general-purpose bullying accomplishes next to nothing, and makes us look weak and ineffective in the process. I'm not sure why this topic came up to begin with. Has our fine Bush Administration been proposing boycotts? Maybe they'll follow that up with sanctions threats against China, and if that doesn't work, it's time for trash talking! Won't that be fun.

Don't get me wrong ... I have nothing buy sympathy for the demonstrators in Mayanmar who are getting gunned down by their own government. If there was a magic wand we could wave to make it stop, we would. However, boycotts are not a magic wand. They will do nothing to change the situation on the ground in that troubled country, and they will not help our relations with China. It's time to start using our heads for a change...

Glenn:

So, we should allow one repressive, human-rights abusing country that holds sway over another even more repressive, human-rights abusing country to go on doing what they are doing with no pressure or repercussions?

China should never have been awarded the Olympics in the first place.

Sure, let Than Shwe and his evil cronies escape to Singapore with their ill-gotten gains. Then have the ICC issue an arrest warrant for their crimes against humanity and extradite them.

But none of that will help the thousands who have already been murdered and maimed at their hands and the thousands more who will be during the continuation of their crack-down. I don't suppose threatening China will have much success, but what else are we to do?

Is it time for a surgical strike on Naypyidaw? Is it time for the Singapore government to put their money where their mouth is and stop allowing these murderers into their country on the sly for medical treatments and to visit their real estate bought with the blood of their citizens?

I am frustrated that the world is powerless and can only stand by and watch while all of those poor people are being crushed.

Kacoo:

In 1984, McDonald's ran a promotion to coincide with the Los Angeles games. You'ld get a game piece with an American athlete's name on it. If the athlete won gold, you won a Big Mac or Quarter Pounder. Included with each free hamburger was another game piece.

When the Soviets boycotted the Los Angeles games in response to America's boycott of the 1980 Moscow games, Americans won every gold medal. I won four free hamburgers in a row. Kinda funny that McDonald's food isn't considered the breakfast of champions, but America's victories in Los Angeles translated into a fast-food feast for everyone.

Stuart Day:

Every once in a while we have to listen to someone who knows the score. James Fallows is such a person. The idea of boycotting the Olympics over China's position on Burma is absurd. There are other more collective, and more productive, ways to pressure the Chinese. So, how's about getting on with it!

P.K. Chang:

Don't we understand India holds as much influence over Burma as China does, why pick on Chinese only? May be we just have realize that we USA, the superpower, have so little influence over Burma at all.

ted strom:

Wait, Jim, there's an inconsistency in your argument. On the one hand you say we should not take any serious public steps, like an olympic boycott, to make it clear to the chinese government that we find their support of the Burmese junta disgusting. But then at the bottom you say that our diplomats should make it clear to those same leaders that they will look bad in everyone's eyes, and have their long drive toward respect etc. damaged, if they keep this up. Really? Won't their leaders just laugh that off and tell our diplomats that hey, we're Walmart, we own your bond market, and you don't have the courage or the means to criticize us? Won't they just hand them a James Fallows editorial to prove their point?

ovenbird:

Here's another way the US Government to help: Force Chevron to end its operations in Burma. Together with Total of France, Chevron's natural gas projects delivers around $400 million to the Burmese junta, according to Ed Crooks of the Financial Times.

Chris V:

Great points! However, I think you left something very important out: how America is benefitting from attending the Beijing Olympics. This trip should be much nicer the last time that an international force was sent to Beijing, when Italy, Austria-Hungary, Germany, Japan, England, Russia, France, and America sent a massive army there in 1900 to steal economic rights and leases on valuable ports. This is a great time for America to reach out to the Chinese people and reassure China that she is not America's enemy. The fact that we have to do this is a reflection of widespread misunderstandings between China and the US. And not just about the bombed embassy, but also about our One China Policy, our recent nuclear deals with India, and the embarrassing way that some American companies in China have bullied the government into offering cost-saving incentives (oftentimes to the detriment of Chinese laborers in those companies). For all of these reasons and more, America needs to put its best foot forward in 2008.

There is every reason to expect that the Olympics will enrich Beijing, attract China's best and brightest to American universities, encourage stronger trade relations, as well as attract American companies and students to China. That's an unbelievable opportunity, and one that's been long overdue.

The Beijing Olympics will go a long way towards building a stronger friendship with China, and they represent an opportunity that America simply can't afford to squander.
