"In Europe" is perfect for summer reflection. A fresh, first hand chronicle takes you on a trip through the Old Continent's last hundred years: from the optimistic cosmopolitan Paris of 1900 to a snowy Sarajevo recovering from the century's last civil war in 1999. Then read "Los Girasoles Ciegos" to escape the much less exciting present.

Cal Condor, you do know some history. Agree with you wholeheartedly. Then how come you engage in hyperbole over Iraq???? (on James Fallows comments) At most we're in an age of mediocrity, at least until Iran or Pakistan go ballistic.

"DOUBT: a History."by Jennifer Michael Hecht.
tracing doubt through the ages from Socrates
to Voltaire and Thomas Paine and Richard Dawkins.
550 engrossing pages.
A must read for anybody interested in the history
of human ideas and spiritual thought,
and,of course,doubt and skepticism.
Garrison Keillor says "It's the world religions course you wish you'd had in college,
a history of faith told from the outside."

Why would Europeans ever want to "escape from their present mediocrity" and go back to the era of Stalinist camps, Nazi aggression and genocide, raging civil wars in Spain and the Balkans, carpet bombing of entire modern cities, raving demagogues, millions of refugees in flight across Europe? I'll take "mediocrity" of today's Europe any day of the week.
