China Tolerated An Army Sex Change

China - I think China is the perfect place to allow gay marriage. Most people consider the Chinese government conservative and intolerant. But no one is aware that about 10 years ago, the Chinese army allowed one of its officers to have a sex change operation. The Chinese army, infantry, navy and air force, all have their own performance arts groups, as well as arts academies that offer courses in dance, theatre and painting. Jin Xin was a former male dancer who had won several awards in international competitions. His medical transformation to become a woman was performed in a military hospital reserved for officers only. After the operation, he actually stayed in the army for another 2 years before being discharged with honor.

Gay marriage is not only a legislative issue; it is also a cultural issue. In China, the lack of religious morals actually can facilitate the acceptance of gay marriage more easily than in the West. Basically, Chinese do not consider being gay a "sin", at the worst; gays are considered as...well, "queer". If the Chinese government is smart, it would allow gay marriage in China - just think what that would do for its human rights record.
