Most of the time in comments I make on the Post's site I use my real name. The reason is, not because I think I am right, or because I think people who do not are wrong, or that what they have to say is any less. I do it because I think it is important to actually be a person participating in the privilege of free speech. That matters a lot. That is something I want to use my real name on.
There is too often a high price for standing up for what you think peacefully, but injustice names itself when people turn to violence. Living in the USA lets us speak with freedom.
So we have the freedom to say to hell with people like the ODM, and why. They are people who make enemies of everyone but their own like so many of their kind.

"Good journalism is about people WRITING THE TRUTH AS THEY SEE IT."
I guess you could say that about Goebbels and the journalists at the old Pravda, too. Your statement is a thoroughly rotten idea, Mr. Ignatius, though it crystallizes what is wrong and corrupt about you and your many, many colleagues in journalism today.

"Don't Balkanize Kenya -- denounced politicians in his country who were exploiting tribal divisions to settle political scores."
Sorta sounds like what Karl Rove was so good at doing in the last couple of elections, is this sickness worldwide?!? It isn't often said in these extreme right-wing times, but democracy cannot function without an independant media and good journalism is in extremely short supply these days. James Njoroge Wachai, I salute you and wish you well in your courageous efforts -- and my thoughts and prayers are with you!

I find it so unfortunate that those who seek out and try to report the truth in these situations often face the threat of death for words and nothing more. It seems to me that those who are the most afraid of the truth are usually those who also respond most violently when confronted with it. It is my hope that this threat is nothing more than that and no harm comes to him.

David the Bush Administration has been using fear for 7 years now. There has always been problems in the world, but the White House with the help of the Corrupt Media has spread so much propaganda Americans now have to get fair/balanced reporting for overseas. As we have seen the Foreign Press gives the truthful facts while the US Media doesn't. US reporters, the White House and others have told Americans for 7 years America doesn't torture/have secret planes/ would be welcomed in Iraq. Proven fact all were complete lies by all who reported. Now we are to believe the all the Media and reporters didn't know a thing about this. We're not stupid all of you knew, while spreading the lies.
Bin Laden said he had no knowlege of 9/11 attack but that the United States would no longer have to be attacked by anyone the United States would destroy itself. Those statements have come true as pure fact. We have a bankrupt Economy, no Military and a Corrupt Administration with Corrupt Law Makers. Now the buzz word is change as new leaches attach themselves for this greed. McCain is all over the place with lies. Senator Obama gives a great speech with no experience or qualifications to lead but has John Kerry/Ted Kennedy to run the White House for him. Now we do have a qualified experienced candidate but Americans don't believe in equal rights or woman's rights. Even Woman in America yell for equal jobs/pay but turn their back on a Woman would worked hard to get more qualification then all the male candidate. Yes we will see change but the surprise for woman is they will go backward and get less education. The American policy will be as before as Woman will have no rights and will not be able to own property. Doug Henry of Tenn. was write a husband can rape his wife because he owns her as property. Woman deserve every thing they get for the chance they had for equality and change they just kept following a great speecher with no action behind that speech.

Dear Mr. Ignatius
You are stunned and horrified by one death threat to a fellow journalist. This is a noble response and we support the condemnation of such behavior where ever and when ever it takes place.
We also have to review your actions on behalf of the hundreds of journalist who have been killed or injured by the Israeli occupation authorities in Palestine and Lebanon. Here we find you silent and absent from the scene.
While you glorify the actions of the American forces in Iraq, something you are entitled to, we never heard from you when Al Jazira offices were shelled in Baghdad or when a French reporter is attacked by American Marines on the road to the Airport as well as when tens of Iraqi journalists are killed, injured or imprisoned by the American occupation authorities.
How about Sami Al Hajj, the Al Jazira reporter incarcerated in Guantanamo.
While we abhor that Mr.James Njoroge Wachai is being threatened, what makes him so special for you specifically to come out with such a declared position while you never bothered yourself before with the well being of fellow journalists.
We suggest that a hard hitting column by you in the Washington Post on the subject of journalists in Palestine and/or Iraq may win you a reprieve.

In the Kenyan conflict, the fact that now they are threatening the journalists is very chilling. The people who are threatening the journalists, are showing the "stuff" that they are made of. These so-called people for freedom, are nothing more than thugs in the disguise of a movement that seeks a truly righteous result. Is it so much to ask of all freedom movements that they allow journalists to write the truth as they see it and do it without threats of death and violence? But, some of today's freedom movements are merely disguises for the tyrannical and despotic, they use the banner of freedom to withdraw the very freedoms that have made them so accessible and successful. I, for one, would hope that the violence in Kenya would come to an end without the use of even more and worsening violence. To achieve the goals set forth by the ODM, would be very admirable, but the use of violence and threats of violence to silence the media, will only bring shame upon the movement as a whole and reduce the effectiveness of any government that is formed by them and with them.

When Khofi Annan was UN Secretary General, he floated the idea of redrawing the national borders of Africa along historical tribal lines instead of the 19th Century boundaries imposed by the colonial powers. I thought it was a good idea then, and still do - a difficult task, but worth the effort.
The idea didn't fly back then, so Annan quietly dropped it. It sounds like that's where he is headed now, with Kenya as a trial run.

The perpetrators of violence in Kenya are all possessed by evil. For a good person to do an evil act means for them to become evil. Threatening, driving out, or killing neighbors you have lived with peacefully and in friendship for years is not the act of goodness; but a sign of surrender to evil.
As to the person or persons who issued the threat, "You are writing bad articles about ODM in American newspapers," the note said. "We are watching you and you are a marked man. . . . You will die like a cow." You sir, are a base-born, gutless coward, a theif in the night, a person of uncertain parentage, a useless blot on the face of humanity.
If dueling were allowed, I'd challenge you to combat with any, or even no weapons, and beat the tar out of you as you so richly deserve.

"But and however, it is still better than getting car-bombed in Damascus by Israeli agents that could not stand losing to Hezbollah two years ago, no?"
---------------------------
I am against threats and murder by any means. That is why it is important to point out that the above quote by an earlier poster is misleading. I have no idea who killed the Hezbollah murderer in Damascus, but if it was the Israeli's or the U.S. it was not done because the Israeli's "lost" to Hezbollah in the Lebanon war two years ago. It was done because of the Hezbollah murderer's murder of Israelis, Americans and Jewish people in Argentina. The fact that the guy bombed a Jewish Community Center in Argentina - not Israel - is worth mentioning, as many people were afraid that the Hezbollah murderer would continue to aid and help other murderers as long as he was alive. This not meant to be a justification for murdering him, but is relevant to the explanation as to why some might be motivated to kill him.

Mr. Ignatious concluded: "Good journalism is about people writing the truth as they see it. James Wachai is our colleague in that effort. When someone threatens him, they threaten our common endeavor."
Following his report that a journalist's life has been threatened, that's not much of a comment. I would have liked to see some indignation and an explanation that death threats are the coward's tool as well as the favored tool of repressive regimes.
Moreover, I disagree that "good journalism is about people writing the truth as they see it."
Good journalism, an enormous responsibility particularly in these times when we are drowning in a sea of lies, is an objective search for the truth, the fearless unmasking of lies.
An op-ed column is different because, ideally based on objective facts, it does involve the writer's perspective.
Aside from being cowards, the individual/s who sent the death threat are only showing that they are incapable of presenting facts and arguments that would rebut Wachai's point of view.

I fully sympathize with James Wachai who has just received a threat to his life from some people in Kenya who obviously felt aggrieved by a recent post of his in PostGlobal.
Journalism worthy of the canons of the profession does not shy away from pursuing the truth--and telling it like it is. In fact, its mission is to pursue the truth and let the chips fall where they may.
Thus it is a given that journalists normally run the risk of lawsuits, of criticism and denunciation, and, in this particular case, of threats to one's life.
It is likewise a given that parties who find themselves on the wrong end of a journalistic piece may react in a variety of ways, depending on the damage which the truth creates. In this instance, the damage to the aggrieved party in Kenya may have been quite consequential--or perceived as such.

No one has a right to threaten or take away someone's life, and I condemn the violence in Kenya 100%.
That said, Wachai has raised important issues in his two articles -- unfortunately, they are thoroughly subjective and badly tainted with 'bias.'
Heavy handed 'Tribalism' in favor of one 'Tribe' since Kenya attained independence is the primary cause of the political upheavals in that country today, and an unbalanced and biased article(s) in a high traffic website like the Washington Post, will draw in a few 'nut bags' armed with "death threats."
I am just wondering Mr. Ignatius -- are you really familiar with Kenyan politics?
Here is the truth that Wachai conveniently leaves out: http://www.afroarticles.com/article-dashboard/Article/20-reasons-why-President-Kibaki-s-Government-should-be-overthrown-by-Kenyans/68881
I hope Koffi Annan will come up with a workable solution, that will help stop the blood shed in Kenya -- but I am afraid that, if the root causes of this problem are not 'tackled by the horns,' and instead 'band-aid' is applied, the Kenyan problem will not go away, for it's roots are deep -- the bitter truth must be aired out before any true healing can be achieved.

The first response is to kill anyone speaking anything inconvenient, especially if it is the truth. This kind of thing is done in the name of Islam and it contributes to hostility towards Islam and muslims in general. Exactly how are these threat-mongers achieving the "respect" they seek for Islam or for muslims?
As a private individual in another country, I am, in this particular case, only able to say to Mr. Wachai: I admire your courage and your ethic to state the truth.
I hope no harm comes to you and that, simultaneously, your ethical journalism is vindicated.

I posted several hours ago regarding the "David Ignatius/Valentine" question and a message also appeared that my post was being held for "review".
Thank You Mr. Wachai for your brave voice, your enormous talent, your ability to bring clarity and understanding to so many chaotic and violent events in our world today.

To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, freedom depends upon freedom of information. Journalists, like Mr. Wachai, who risk their lives to inform us are heroes in the trenches for freedom.

Daniel, We're not aware of any problems with comments on any of our PostGlobal pages at the moment. If you or others are having trouble posting one, please let us know what you're seeing at postglobal@washingtonpost.com.
We don't pre-approve comments before they're posted on the site. We allow users to post them in real-time and then monitor the threads for abuse, relying on other users to help us by flagging comments that are inappropriate. We do see those comment flags and we do take them seriously.
If you think something's not working correctly, please do send us an email. Thanks.

Is this why no posts are allowed on postglobal at the present time? All posts it seems since #39 on the headscarf issue in Turkey are prevented from appearing, routed to a "postglobal reviewer" who apparently feels none of the posts qualify. Notice no posts at all on the Valentine day question. Is postglobal being shut down? Clarification on the problem would be nice. Thanks.

Let's get some of our hacker's to uncover the senders of that threatening e-mail and we have people all over the world we can send to take care of them. Is extreme prejudice too severe?
What would Sam Hoffman do?
