The Current Discussion: India recently passed a national smoking ban. Should the rest of the world follow, or is that stepping over the line?
Anyone traveling to the Middle East will realize the problem with cigarette smoking and the use of water pipes. The Indian national smoking ban is an excellent idea, especially considering that the third world has suffered enormously from the scourge of smoking.
First and second hand smoke is the main source of so many health-related problems that the time has come for the world to identify it as the cause of many deaths. Of course it is not enough just to ban smoking. India should create a national awareness program that will help reduce tobacco use, especially among teenagers. Celebrities must be asked to help in this campaign. Also a law without an enforcement mechanism will not be very effective in changing a decades old problem like smoking.
