It is very hard for a country to enforce such a policy on all its citizens and all its allies. Imagine that your loved one is next in line to be killed, as the Taliban have shown before that they will do. Would you support such a policy of non-negotiation?
But the bigger problem with the statement, "we don't negotiate with terrorists," is that one group’s terrorists may be another group’s freedom fighters. I am not advocating negotiating with the Taliban, but any negative policy must be balanced with a parallel positive strategy. The U.S. and the West must find a way to provide those who support the Taliban something positive as an alternative.
