jak:

people have to have the desire to be free and democratic before we can export these to them, otherwise we will just beat a dead horse and that is in no ones interests

Salamon:

As was proven in Lebanon and in Iraq, and soon in Afganistan, military strength is insufficient in invaded countries to establish puppet governments. Therefore, Mr. Daoud Kuttab's above comment can be equated to Mr. Bush's "we will export democracy to IRaq" -- a bad dream with no relation to reality.

Jean Tobin, Redmond, USA:

The young Iranians revolted against the Shah's regime in Iran because it was a puppet of the USA. History will repeat. No Muslim will support a government that is perceived to be a puppet of the USA. Therefore, Iraq will not be a democracy. The tribal and religious leaders may follow a strong leader. The oil companies may lose out, and we will be dependent on other sources.
A democracy cannot be imposed on top of tribal religious governments.
The MidEastern conflicts will continue until Israel and Palestine each have respectable separate states. I am not a seer, but this is based on reading a few books.
