Amman, Jordan--The World Cup is internationally successful because all countries are on an even playing field. Each team is allowed the same number of players and subject to the same rules of the game. By contrast, double standards harm for the international community's ability to be taken seriously.
The importance of an even playing field in international affairs increases with globalization and the information revolution. People are no longer ignorant. What is said in Washington is immediately heard in Jedda; the actions in Gaza are simultaneously followed up in Sydney and Paris.
But one should not belittle the complexity of international affairs. We should not take up the idea that FIFA, which is largely a sports and financial organization, can easily replace existing international organizations.
