Master of New Labour, Puppet in Iraq

It will not take 25 years before Tony Blair is recognized as the most imaginative and effective European political leader of his time. He has modernized the British Labour Party, forging a third way to reform our complex societies torn between welfare state and the requirements of globalization. But he also fell into a classic British trap.

A IMPRENSA BRASILEIRA E OUTRAS CONSIDERAÇÕES

-------------------------------------------------------

- É o maior exportador mundial de aço e aumentou a sua produção, nos últimos três anos em mais de 40%;

- As reservas internacionais da china, superiores a USD 1,3 trilhões ( a maior do mundo), e com recursos proprios, já financiam mais de 10% do deficit americano;

- É o 2o. país em acesso à Internet;

Minh:

"In the 10 years of his tenure, he has modernized the British Labour Party, gotten rid of its old Marxist obsessions and forged a third way to reform our complex societies torn between the welfare state and the requirements of globalization."

To credit Tony Bliar , oh sorry, Blair for modernizing the Labour Party is like credit the TV weather presenter for accurate forcasting. English influence in science and technology, English influence in international trade and globalization is a fact of life that even the French have to accept.

That influence is obvious considering the role of the British commonwealth in the advance of free societies in the world. Look at the colonies of France in 19 and 20 centuries and compare them to English colonies: Indochina and Algeria to India and Malaysia. The way French people was war and conquest, English people was negotiation and common interests.

Blair, simply accept the kickbacks of Middle Easterners rich in oil and provide them what they needed to further the cause of despots in Middle East. Accepting capital inflow from dubious sources like Russian Roman Abramovich or Thailand's Thaksin Shinawatra, the UK has tried to become the new Switzerland of the global economy.

To reduce Blair to a American poodle is also a half-truth. Blair, Bush, Cheney et al all worked for a group of capitalists that wanted to control Middle Eastern resources and geopolitics. And Blair simply emulate what Bill Clinton have done in the US, without the wisdom of Clinton to avoid Iraq and Afghanistan.

Atheist, Boston, USA:

Tony Blair will be remembered primarily for failing to strengthen Western values in the United Kingdom (UK) and abroad. He declined to demand that the Islamic bigots (living in the UK) assimilate. He further insisted that the European Union (EU) admit Turkey as a member. He wrongly believes that Islamic values are equal in worth to Western values.

By contrast, Nicolas Sarkozy opposes admitting Turkey into the EU. Furthermore, he insists that all Islamic bigots (living in France) assimilate into Western society.

shiloh, FL, USA:

Tony Blair's major failure was his inability to redirect George Bush. Blair's moral compass was more finely attuned to what is right and proper. His American master was less competent, but prevailed. Blair tried and failed, but persevered,in the tradition of Churcill to Roosevelt. He will be remembered for his accomplishment as much as for the major fault of ineffectually dealing with an intellectual inferior. Churchill and Roosevelt were equals - but Tony had to deal with a dolt and couldn't muster the courage to call it what it was.

Francine Last:

Christine Ockrent is completely right! Blair's association with George Bush will be the greatest stain on his reputation and I think he knows it now. War is an archaic means of solving differences and it takes years of peace to heal the wounds of war. The pain and the suffering that the Iraqis have to endure after years of US/British idiocy will be hard to forget. Let's ask the Iraqis what they think of Blair and Bush when all this is over.

saias:

Christine Ockrent puts out the common version from France's center right.

The fact is that Blait was no puppet of Bush - he very courageously supported an unpopular war, and was unable, unfortunately as any other other person in power, to provide a vision or a pathway for the systemic reforms necessary to make the war a success.

John Wagner:

Bow wow, Tony. Hear that? It's the barking of Bush's little poddle. Bow wow wow, that's Cherrie Blair lapping up the last of her husband's... well, I'll leave it at that. Burn in Hell, Tony, and great Bush when he arrrives.

rajiv lal:

One bloke gone, one more to go.

grossefatigue:

I think he was terrific! Think about France today if it had had a young President like Blair.

AxelDC:

Watching the film "The Queen", newly minted PM Tony Blair is an obvious hero in the film. Seeing him in the salad days of his government, you get a sense of hope for a new Cool Britania after 2 decades of Thatcherism.

Then you start to reflect on Tony Blair today, and you think "What a disappoint he turned out to be!" Even his own party is counting the days until he leaves #10.

For all his early promise, I now only associate TB with two things: Iraq, and the Honours for Pay scandal. What a sad legacy for such a promising young Prime Minister.

B-man:

Like so many others, Tony Blair will be forever tarnished by his association with the worst president of the United States in history.

Abdullahi:

T.blair would be remembered as nr.2 liar, after the George Bush. He drove UK into a dirty, illigel war that consumed nearly 1 million innocent Iraks. He is blood-thirsty leader who degraded the respect of britions all over the world, particularly in Islamic world.

Blair is nothing more than a secondary element of Bush's war against muslim world. History will never be nice to him and one day justice will be served.

Orlando:

Tony Blair is a tragic figure forever linked to Buhs's Iraq War failure. Tony Blair will be remembered as Bush's poodle.
