It will not take 25 years before Tony Blair is recognized as the most imaginative and effective European political leader of his time. In the 10 years of his tenure, he has modernized the British Labour Party, gotten rid of its old Marxist obsessions and forged a third way to reform our complex societies torn between the welfare state and the requirements of globalization.
Blair has demonstrated considerable -- if at times overinflated -- communication skills, a prerequisite of modern leadership. His major mistake is to have fallen into the classical British trap: mesmerized by the "privileged partnership" with Washington, he became Bush's puppet in Iraq, not his master.
