Paris, France - In our societies, there is no reason to deprive homosexuals of the legal and financial rights which we are all entitled to. France has set up a system called PACS which guarantees such rights whilst avoiding the connotations of "marriage". It is an official contract coupled with a civil ceremony at City Hall. In a country like the U.S. so much more impregnated with religion, it is easy -- and quite despicable -- to see what political mileage can be drawn from homosexual marriage issue, which seems to surface at every election.
The Democratic Party would be well advised to articulate a coordinated position on this issue -- like it would be on so many others. It would give the party more credibility as an alternative to self-righteous conservatism. This is important at a time when social issues have become so much a part of politics.
