Yes, and this is because America would have even less influence over their behavior if we were to cut them off. Diplomacy is about choosing the least bad of different options, and punitive measures would be counterproductive. But, hey, why come to grips with messy realities when you can instead make cheap criticisms about American hypocrisy? After all, you're a pundit, not a policy-maker, and so you don't have to answer for the consequences of your ideas.

It is not just US, the world is very good at offering lip service. Witness how world condemned Afghan expulsion of a laborer who converted to Christianity or jailing of democratic leader in Muyanmar. Wasn’t it mere lip service, to be forgotten the day after?

first off, to consider the US on par with any of the nations mentioned on the report is just plain stupid. Considering that Abu Ghraib was done out of the sight of the people above the prison and Guantanamo being an anomaly of this president that is doomed to extinction with the next one, the tiny case one does have becomes even smaller. These incidents involving altogether a couple hundred people, while wrong, are miniscule in comparison with what so many others have done. Even the fact that Guantanamo will die with Bush's presidency is a testament to the fact that US mistakes are short-lived, in comparison with these regimes.

Secondly, if you find a way to go about changing the regime of a country with over a billion people, then please let me know. If we took away favored nation status, we wouldn't be doing anything but pissing them off and hurting our own economy as well as theirs. As for the others, its a simple case of 'the devil you know is better than the devil you don't'. Why on Earth would you ever see a country topple or demand regime change in a friendly nation? Americans are always in favor of democracy and liberty, but if that means replacing a friendly autocratic government with a religious, hostile government, well it is quite obvious why Americans would be willing to look the other way.

I give Kudos to the US government for actually doing these reports when very few others actually will. Why is the US not in its own report? The answer is actually pretty simple: it doesn't have to be. The actions of the US government are vetted every day and night by people around the world. Contrary to conspiracy lore, there are not hundreds of people locked up in secret camps (Guantanamo is no secret), being tortured day and night in complete secrecy. Most Americans are in disgust with Guantanamo, and it won't live to see the end of the decade. That is why the US is not engaged in full-blown hypocrisy. Unlike others, we can change our government's policies peacefully from within, without changing the government. We also manage to go back, admit our mistakes, and generally apologize for them (slavery, Japanese internment). Instead of bashing on the US for its far-from-perfect record, why don't you just concentrate your hate on the people who really deserve it, instead of blowing out of a proportion the case against America.

I never understood why we are allowed to have guns. How many school shootings? How many armed robberies? And how many police killings does it take for us to realize if others have rights to own guns, that might take my right to live away? Nobody will ask you if you give them the consent to shoot you before they shoot you. This kind of stuff in China will never happen because they are not allowed to have guns. Chinese government is corrupted because it is communist? Who are we to judge who is right and wrong? We can't force everyone to act like us, do we actually give them the so called "human rights" to choose for their own good? Or we are forcing them to change? I don't even want to point out who did what in our government. Do we care about civilian's human rights in Iraq? Or we just have double standards. And what can I say about Tibetans' "peaceful protest"? So far they have clashed with Chinese police, Indian police, Nepalese police, New York police...

If we want to talk about world peace and human rights, start from ourselves first, stop invading other countries and stop killing innocents. And guess what, you will never know when someone will point a gun at you for whatever reason.
