Mr. Bashir Goth, I appreciate your article. I am not qualified to comment on the Islam/Arab perspective as I am neither.

I can comment from experience as an African American and world traveler. What I have observed in my lifetime is blatant "White-Skin-Worship." Hollywood producers perpetuate it and it is institutionalized within American society.

In one Asian country in which I currently live, skin whiteners are big business among women. They avoid the sun like it was a plague. Those with near white skin get the better jobs and greater priviledges with the society. You will not see "brown-skin" female Asians in their model magazines or occupying positions where one will be seen by the public (such as TV anchors and reporters). Sadly, all within this society recognizes this and "black skin" (non-white skin) is simply unattractive in their view. Many women here would rather seek an old scruffy looking White man who mistreats them than a non-White who is educated, good looking, and treats them with respect. Why? Because they do not want "brown" children. Brown (non-White) children, especially girls, have very little value and priviledge.

This raises an interesting issue: Are they ashamed of the race that bred them? Who is responsible for this?

In part, I believe it is the notion, spread and perpetuated by White folk, that White skin is angelic.

A recent headline in a prominent newspaper here of an Asian getting engaged to the former 2005 Miss Universe (who is Lilly white), displayed a closeup of her face and referred to her as "Angelic."

We never see these types of references made to non-Whites anywhere. Even Picasso and renaissance painting portray Angels as White.

I personally think that the world in which we live is dysfunctional.

One should appreciate the variety in color among humankind and not be ashamed of the race that bred them. White folk should get their heads out of the sand and cultivate a complete tolerance for the other races on this planet. They should stop defining for everyone what is good or bad. This planet does not belong to them.

Will America ever see a Black President? No, never. America still suffers from a disease and that disease is called "White Supremacy" and this segment of that society will never accept a Black President no matter how qualified he is. Why? It would be well for all Muslims to remember what Allah told us in the Quran: "I made you beautiful." The standards of beauty in society are false, fleeting and potentially damaging. Allah tells us that we are beautiful just as He made us.

The authors did not write Islam is solely responsible for prizing fair skin. He said that Muslims are also responsible. Some people define religion via texts, that is Islam via Quran, and Christainty via Bible. Others define religion via people. That is Islam via Musliums and Christainty via Christains. The former is by theroy, and latter is by practice. Personally, I prefer latter because it is the latter which impacts people on a daily basis. When people talk about Chinese culture, it is the Chinese people who should be ultimate meter, not the Chinese texts.

The author simply and clearly stated that many cultures, including Muslium, prize fair skin over dark skin. That is not equal whites over blacks. In this sense, it is even true for many black americans, who do not necessary pursuits white americans, but do prefer lighter skin blacks over darker skin blacks. I can tell you for certain that Chinese (as a whole) prefer lighter skin Chinese over dark skin Chinese, and this preference has been long documented before Chinese knew of Europeans. A very simple but powerful evident: ancient Chinese women used white powder for makeup, not black powder. Guess why? Same for many other cultures. Fair skin tone has to do with elite statue, wealth and younger age, not about European superiority.

It is true that many Muslims prefer lighter skin women than darker. Again, the author did not say Musliums are soley responsible. In fact, he put most of the blame on the mass media. I must say that the tolerance within the Muslim society is next to nothing. I being a Muslim myself am ashamed of the impatience that (so-called) Muslims show in their everyday lives. Islam teaches patience and tolerance and stands against impatience and intolerance (which is what people themselves actually believe are Muslims).

It is completely true that people who in the past called themselves Muslims (it is up to God to decide whether or not we are Muslims). And the Quran clearly states that there will be poeple who will say that they believe in God and the Day of judgemnet but in fact those very people won't be Muslims. It is not enough to call yourself a Muslim.

The word Muslim means one who walks upon the path of peace. A bitter man cannot walk on the path of peace. He walks upon the path of bitterness. May God guide us all. Muslims and non-Muslims alike to path of righteousness. Amen. Enough of this, I'll get to the point.

It is very true that the vast majority of Muslims almost worship white skin. That is most probably ingrained in our instinct rather than anything else. It is only the brain which is able to rise humans above instinct. Or else we would be animals as well. Darkness has always been associated with evil from the beginning of time as it is a time when one is not able to see anything with the eyes. And humans felt helpless against wild predators which were a threat to humans. And we all know whatever makes us feel threatened is what we put in the category of evil. Hence, the love for the fair color as it represents the daylight. During which we are able to use our eyes to see. And defend ourselves more easily. Almost 70-80% of our brains processing power is used up by the eyes. And the eyes again in is the most common thing which per instinct use to grasp the world around us. Combining these two factor would make the love for lighter colors the more obvious.

Blaming has always be easier than understanding and facing the truth in it's depth. So there is nothing new in that. It's just pure ignorance. And ignorance is the true darkness. I think that instead of blaming other, might it be Muslims blaming non-Muslims and vice versa. We should try to understand why is that we really prefer lighter color of skin over darker. It doesn't make one a better person if one prefers the darker color of skin just to show contempt for the lighter version.

Here is something else that Muslims, who believe they are superior to women, can think about. The Holy Doctrine of the Catholic Church teaches that women are equal to men, and have the same rights as men. All peace loving and just men should agree with this doctrine. Here's the difference. The magisterium of The Holy Catholic Church is holy. The Magisterium of Islam is very unholy in many parts. I'm sure you know this fact if you have read the Qur'an, Taqiyya, Hadiths, etc. When a Christian follows the Christian Magisterium, he becomes good and holy. If he doesn't follow it, he becomes violent and unjust like those so-called Christians that you mentioned. To me, those so-called Christians that deviated from the Holy Magisterium are more like children of Satan, not unlike the Muslims who are following the Qur'an and other Islamic documents. You see? I write like it is.
When a Muslim doesn't follow his historical documents, very often he is a very good Muslim. I have already mentioned that. In fact, very often he is a person not unlike an authentic Christian, who is following the Christian Magisterium. On the other hand, when a Muslim is following his historical documents, like the Qur'an, he becomes a very violent and unjust person. In other words, the evil Muslims are the "good" Muslims, and the good Muslims are the "evil" Muslims for not following the Qur'an and other Muslim documents. I'm hoping you are not following the historical documents of Islam because if you are then you are a very hateful, violent and unjust person. If islam is to be blamed for the glorification of a lighter skin tones, how come there are east indians, Hispanics and all kinds of non-moslim races who are also using skin lightner. Even Among Somalia, there is a disparity in the use of skin lighners, where the Djiboutian women prefer lighter skin tonnes more than their main land Somali counter parts. I think the issue has more to do with the western influences than Islamic text.

Arabic culture is not automatic islamic religion. In arabic states,are much christian arabs people(Egypt 15%,Libanon33%...).

The famous belly dances you write in the text are not muslim. In islam public dancing,also erotic dance is absolute forbidden.(charam)

Perhaps if colonization had been in the reverse direction--meaning whites were colonized, darker skin tones would be "more prized." There is a undoubtedly a certain appeal for wanting what you cannot have. The fact that white women were "off-limits" may only have made them more appealing and ingrained this notion in the minds of the colonized world.

It is, however, ridiculous to blame Islam for this. How can what is fashionable in the 20-21st century be blamed on a a religious text from over a thousand years ago?

Fair color gets fair treatment all-over the world.

We in Muslim societies pay lip service to Islamic teachings of equality but fail to live up to it. For instance in Pakistan, the fair color girl is prized item and preferred. That is not to say that this is the only criterion. I would say the caste/tribes over-rides the fair color rule.

Concept of beauty is subjective and can not be fully rationalized "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder". With that you also have to put power equation in so that you can explain beauty. Those dispossessed would tend to emulate those who enjoy power. For example, tanning skin is now has become very common among low/middle whites. This sort of behvaior change can be explained with the fact that these low/middle class white are trying to emulate their materially comfortable cousin who have attained power and material wealth go off to beaches to enjoy and tan their skins. In short tanned skin today is a mark of power therefore you have this craze for tanning. But if you go a century back, the case was different and transparaent pale color was in the vogue.

In the end, wonder why we can't judge based on content and not color.

First of all, Islam is not to blame for the "prizing of white skin". If you are going to judge Islam, then judge it by the teachings of the Quran, which muslims believe are the direct words of God(Allah) through the angel Gabriel(Jabril) to His prophet, Muhammad. Nowhere in the Quran will you find basis for such a notion.

The truth is that the "prizing of white skin" was done by white people. White people invented the idea that "I am better than you because I'm white". They have even painted God and Jesus white and have pushed that image to all the non-white people. They say that Jesus is the "son of God" so that if you have seen the white son, then by inference you can estimate what the father looks like.

On a subconcious level, this translates to the closer you are physically and spiritually to white people, the closer you are to godliness,perfection, and beauty.

The white people invaded the non-white lands from ancient times. They overran what is today Syria, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Arabia, Pakistan and Egypt from ancient times. They left their women in Europe, so there were only men in the invasions. They infused their blood into the non-white people and perfected their doctrine of white supremacy.

Interestingly, a preference for lighter skin is a common trait in human societies. Even the ancient Egyptians, who lived with a full range of skin tones, associated lighter skin with status and desireability, and not only with women.

One theory to account for this is that of "conspicuous leisure", ie, the concept that since rich and prestigious people don't have to do physical labor, looking like you don't need to do physical labor associates you with society's elite. Most early societies required a good deal of outdoor labor to tend to herds and harvest crops, and since sunlight darkens skin, a conspicuously light skin proclaims that the owner is more likely to be sitting under a canopy sipping his Egyptian equivalent of mint juleps while his inferiors tend to the field, than getting down and dirty himself. In short, a desireable mate.

In a society where women "belong" to men, the theory continues, they become a visual extension of his own status. In victorian society, for instance, a successful man was one who could give his wife a beautiful home and lots of servants and absolutely no reason to go out-of-doors, at least without carrying a parasol and having servants present to keep the sun off her. Thus, the paler his wife was, the more successful *he* was deemed to be. This reached its extreme in such cultures, with "blue veins" and "transparent skin" the marks of a solarphobic, non-laboring women (because skin without melanin appears more translucent, and the veins can sometimes be seen through it.)

What culture exists today that is more true to this social pattern than Arab society? -- and yes, I apologize, but conservative islamic society as well, Arab or otherwise. Much as the victorians did, they treat their women as prizes to be kept (and enjoyed) in the home, and presented in public only as social extensions of their husbands and/or fathers. In fact, the concept that a woman's appearance affects the status of her menfolk is far more marked in these societies than ever it was among the Victorians. In both cases, the pale skin and delicate demeanor of a mans' mate reflects well upon him, hence becomes a desireable and attractive trait in his eyes. Women who must go out more and *do* things ultimately get tan.
