1) Accept the return into this land and APOLOGIZE to these people who had been displaced in misery and sufferings since the begining of the 20th century by terror and slaughter.

Solution:
One secular multi-cultural multi-religious democrcay for all: Arabs (Christains and Muslims)and jews who lived in historic Palestine at or before 1914-all other jews who landed there after 1914 who are in fact illegal jewish immigrants sumggled by the British mandate authority should go back to where they come from and leave the homes and land they stole from the ethnically cleanesed Palestinians by jewish terrorist groups(hagana,palmach,irgun,shtern)in 1947/8.

1. Israel has already conceded significantly to achieve peace, Sinai for non-agression with Egypt.
2. Egypt's economy which is far less reliant on oil than many others in the middle east is better than average in part b/c they don't have to over-build military to keep up with their neighbors.
3. When has any Arab Nation offerred land to the Muslim Palestinians for a homeland? Never, most were treated worse as refugees after '48 than they were treated in Israel
4. Christian Arabs are active members of Israeli society, curious if we are talking about an arab-european ancestry conflict. The religious tennants of more conservative/radical islam and Centuries of Jewish fears fuel this conflict.
5. When lands that were considered part of Palestine were Occupied by Egypt, Jordan and Syria, from '48 to '67, did anyone demand that they be turned over to the "rightful" government of Israel? No. Did they offer to the Muslim Palestinians as homeland? No.
6. Who is Israel to negotiate with? Hamas? Is Hamas really idependent to make decisions without approval of Hezbollah? Is Hezbollah really independent to make decisions without the Syrians? Are the Syrians really independent to make decisions without Iranian approval?
7. A wise man once wrote Arabs cannot win a war without Egypt and cannot have peace without Syria. Modern Edit would have to include Iran.
8. Solution that will never happen - Palestinians get Gaza and Sinai, Isreal gets pre '67 borders, plus Golan and West Bank, minus Jerusalem, which becomes international city occupied by international peace keepers.

It is frightening to think how rarely we encounter such a fair-minded and balanced view of the Arab-Israeli conflict. In Europe almost everyone blames the Israelis for all the problems. In the United States, and to a lesser extent in Canada, the Palestinians and their Arab supporters get all the blame. A realistic view is that the atrocity scores of both groups are too close to call. Extremists on both sides are the barrier to a peaceful settlement.

One fundamental flaw in the argument lies in the evident erosion of Israel's military might which was helped Israel to maintain an uneasy and in many cases bloody existence - up to 1967.

Since 1973, the validity of the central Israeli strategy: 'maintaining military superiority' is gradually becoming a dangerous illusion. Despite advanced weaponry and a fearsome air force and army, Israel had to withdraw from the Lebanon in 2000 and rush out of the Lebanon in 2006.

While in the former, one can argue that pressure by the Israeli people compounded that of the daily encounters with the Lebanese armed groups, the latter, the July 2006 war was a battle fought on level playing fields... and for all intents and purposes lost.

The advent of rocketry, primitive or advanced, is taking the battle to Israel's hinterland. It was astonishing how, after a month of Israeli bombardment, the Lebanese armed groups were able to launch as many rockets in the last day of the 2006 war as they did on the first.

And now it seems the Gazans are following the example of the Lebanese - and in more ways than one. Israel's army is apparently helpless but for revenge forays and streams of arrests that is swelling Israeli prisons... some 11,500 Palestinian prisoners!

Finally the entry of Iran, the alienation of Russia and the growing Syrian arsenal. Israel is towing the line dictated by the US administration. Its alliance with the US has never been more burdensome. The price it is paying will radically affect its future.

Consequentially, one would need to ask: What concessions would Israel make if the illusory military supremacy is replaced with continued but dampened military superiority - let alone parity? One cannot think of one that is not prejudicial to the Jewishness of Israel.

With that in mind, I am inclined to believe that Israel's leadership would either seek a "Samson's exit," as coined by Seymour Hirsh, or come to terms with the Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese... But those terms would be considerably more favorable to them than if it did so 40, 30, 30, 20 or even a year ago!

Clearly: there are no indications that Israel will be the same in sixty years. I hope the change will come much sooner. It will bring a relief to Israelis and Arabs, and to those watching this endless tragedy.

The obsticles to peace between Arab nations and Israel are currently tribal.

We need political - not tribal - approaches.

For instance on "right of return", the pride of the Arab community that demands right of return is exactly like the Chinese needing to save face in every negotiation...and it has become a tribal issue.

It is IMPOSSIBLE for there EVER to be an actual return of Palestinians to homes occupied by Israeli citizens. Perhaps the settlements in the west bank can be emptied and the buildings and land handed back to the Palestinian authority in representation of the lost homes and land...

But REALISTICALLY NO PALESTINIAN IS EVER GOING TO RETURN TO A HOME OCCUPIED BY A ISRAELI FAMILY TODAY.

It isn't a realistic goal. Sure, some Palestinians want to see the footage of tearful children and parents being escorted away to a refugee center by Israeli soldiers and joyous gunfire in the land on which those homes sit... But it is NEVER going to happen.

This injures the pride of those Palestinians who's ancestors were forced out. Pride MUST be dealt with. Unfortunately it is tribal in nature and few Arab voices can rise above the tribal clatter.

Israel is keeping millions of people in occupation in a very tribal response. Some Israeli's think the Palestinians should go to Jordan and forget they ever lived in what is now Israel... or the west bank... "and btw let's re-take Gaza..." It is NEVER going to happen!

A world of difference with the numbers. The Israeli citizens targeted by the arab freedom fighters are typically unarmed Jewish children or old people. While the arabs that are killed are more often those so called "freedom fighters" and the civilians that they cowardly surround themselves with when they shoot at the Jews.

The last death count I saw about 5 Muslim Palestinians die in Israel for every one Israeli death. Does it matter that the Muslims are killed by rockets and other "conventional" weapons, while the Israelis die by suicide bombers and remote explosives aka "terrorism"? Is a death a death or do the means by which the people die matter?

If you answer the last question with a "yes, the means matter a lot" put yourself in the other side's shoes. Empathize for a minute. Is your answer honestly the same? If the Palestinians had a helicopter with laser guided missles and killed people that way would victims' families "feel" better in some way?

Both sides have to give. Both sides have to make concessions. We can not point fingers or speak in absolutes. The tone of this article gets there but the title puts some on the defensive and some on the attack, as I'll bet the comments to this article will show.

I find any discussion about these old, incendiary topics that begin with one group "must" do something to be a little absurd.

The moderates, which are the majority should take control of the conservatives who stew in their sweat soaked hatred of the other. Both Jewish Israelis and Muslims should consider representing their best interests rather than the hardline of the radicals.

Homer wrote, in the Odyssey, "in all things, balance is better." I don't think that's changed.

The answer is for Syria and Israel to join together for one big region called Syrael. There are enough religious nuts and clusters of radicals to keep the fruits and engrained holdouts from turning it all into mush.
