My good friend Anwer Sher makes a timely point on Thanksgiving Day: "sharing" as a metaphor for diplomatic action. The United States had long been viewed as a visionary power, one that used its own experience in nation building to help struggling societies in the emerging nations of the post-colonial world. Of course, the Iraq adventure seems to have wiped out the global collective memory of American assistance to people in their quest for sustainable development. But there's an immense body of work that was accumulated in Washington on benign nation building, and on the uses of diplomacy for progress on the vexing issues of the post-World War II period. Perhaps Washington might want to consider a new set of initiatives through which those experiences are freshly shared. Instead of the failed "public diplomacy" that erstwhile Under Secretary of State Karen Hughes promoted, why not reach into America's archives and highlight experiences that involving Washington's actions -- including the work of the Peace Corps and USAID -- that genuinely supported the development aspirations of everyday people in emerging countries, including in the Middle East.
