It is most interesting to read the comments below as if the point suggested by the author is illegal, immoral or out of bounds in the dirty game called politics.

Which is worse folks: making a political statement and a legal demand or ..... sanctioning illegal acts such as torture, rendition or operating Guantanamo on a weak and flawed legal opinion of a single lawyer and removing the right of the accused to be charged with a crime, even in the face of a Supreme Court ruling?

Ahmad18 Author Profile Page:

Funny how folks are upset about the writer's idea not following the letter of the law and at the same time care less about laws everywhere else. This writer has a good understanding of how the US system works. He also knows what buttons to push to send Joe the plumber into hysteria.

As for our Obama, I would hope that he is not buying into this hype and thinking that he is the One. There is not one thing that I think he should do, I am hoping that he will work hard to do the right thing in whatever he is dealing with. Same thing I would want for any leader anywhere else.

LKM2 Author Profile Page:

I think that Cheny and Bush should step down immediately and should also be charged with war crimes. How would anyone feel if they knew that Bush and Cheny arbitrarily started a war which killed their loved ones only for the purpose of more money for themselves and their crony friends? This would and does make me darn mad. Our country is suppose to be a leader and superpower which in turn should be setting examples for the rest of the world on how to do things right!!!!! No more, no less!

Fortunately, the United States has a solid democratic process for transition to a new government grounded in a constitution that guarantees a bloodless, non-whimsical, or undemocratic change of government. Unlike Iran, a Dictator for life and his cronies don't simply pull the levers of power and eliminate the opposition before the meaningless elections are held. The people select the President and Congress as they did this year.

I'm not at all surprised that the author of this post doesn't get it. The idea is foreign to him.

hgcsato Author Profile Page:

Seems that few have realised that the article of Dr. Ettefagh does not mention the name of Obama at all, leading me to believe that it was written before the election and suggested to either candidate.

I believe it would have been a de facto early takeover of power if McCain was elected, if only to show very quickly that (a) he is different from Bush and (b) the GOP has changed.

Decent people must do the decent thing and resign when they are wrong and when they have driven the country to bankruptcy. So, the basic principle of early resignation should at least serve as a symbolic apology to taxpayers.

Translation of Ahmadinejad's Letter
Here is a Washington Post translation of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's letter to Barack Obama:

The great civilization-building and justice-seeking nation of Iran would welcome major, fair and real changes, in policies and actions, especially in this region.

If steps are taken in the path of righteousness, toward the goal of carrying out the teachings of the holy prophets, it is hoped that almighty God will help and that the enormous damage done in the past will be somewhat diminished.

I ask the high God to grant all of humanity and all nations health and happiness, honor and prosperity, and to grant rulers and officials the ability to learn from the past and to use every chance to serve, to spread love and kindness, to eradicate oppression, to do justice and to follow the holy guidelines.

Mahmoud Ahmadiniejad
--------------------------------------
1. A PRIMARY BASIS OF CONFLICT IN THE ENTIRE REGION
IS IRAN'S ++++ REPEATEDLY ++++ EXPRESSED VIEWS THAT THE NATION OF ISRAEL SHOULD NOT, NOR DOES IT OR ITS PEOPLE DESERVE TO EXIST AS A SOVEREIGN NATION.

2. THE CONCEPT OF 'GOD AND THE PROPHETS' LAWS AS APPARENT IN THE KORAN AND THE HADDITH, APPARENTLY LET LITTLE ROOM FOR A NATION, SUCH AS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WHERE THERE IS A GENERALLY ENFORCED SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.

3. WHILE NUCLEAR POWER COULD ARGUABLY SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT MUCH DAMAGE, THE LEGITIMATE CONCERNS OF ISRAEL ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF WEAPONS GRADE URANIUM AND PLUTONIUM BY IRAN CANNOT BE IGNORRED.

4. IT IS TRUE THAT ISRAEL CURRENTLY HAS NUCLEAR WEAPONS, BUT IT IS ALSO TRUE THAT ISRAEL HAS NEVER USED THOSE WEAPONS IN MULTIPLE CONFLICTS AND IT IS ALSO TRUE THAT ISRAEL DOES ++++ NOT ++++ TAKE THE POSITION THAT IRAN HAS NO RIGHT TO EXIST. INDEED ISRAEL HAS NEVER STATED THAT ANY ARAB OR ISLAMIC NATION DOES NOT HAVE A RIGHT TO EXIST.

5. INASMUCH AS IRAN UNDERSTANDABLY TAKES THE POSITION THAT IT HAS HISTORICALLY BEEN A DEVELOPER OF GREAT CIVILIZATIONS, WHICH IS TRUE, AS HAS IRAQ ALSO, IT IS ALSO TRUE THAT IRAN HAS BEEN AND ++++ CONTINUES TO BE WILLING ++++ TO USE MILITARY FORCE REGIONALLY TO SUSTAIN THAT ‘HISTORICAL’ IMAGE,

6. IRAN HAS BEEN HOSTILE TO ISLAMIC AND OTHER SERIOUS SCHOLARS UNDERTAKING PUBLIC STUDIES, AS HAS BEEN DONE WITH BOTH JUDIASM AND CHRISTIANITY, AIMED AT DEVELOPING A 'HISTORICAL'-- 'ARCHIOLOGICAL' MUHAMMAD AND EARLY PERIODS OF ISLAM WITHIN THE FIRST 400 TO 500 YEARS AFTER THE DEATH OF THE PROPHET.

SUCH EFFORTS HAVE ALREADY TAKEN PLACE WITH BOTH JUDIASM AND CHRISTIANITY, AND THEY HAVE RESULTED IN THE QUESTIONING OF MUCH EARLY 'MYTH' [SCRIPTURE] ABOUT BOTH TRADITIONS.

7. THE ONGOING RELIGIOUS JUSTIFICATION OF DISHONESTY AS A FUNDAMENTAL KORANIC RIGHT AND DUTY -- IN DEALING WITH INFIDELS -- THOSE WHO ARE NOT ISLAMIC.

RBCrook Author Profile Page:

This is an idiotic suggestion. For you to think that the world insist we abandon our constitutional form of government to appease it's ignorant thinking is beyond belief.

You so thoroughly do not understand our country and our form of government that your continued comments here are a joke.

Let me call on the world to mind its own business -- we don't need your advice and would be fools to follow it.

brucerealtor@gmail.com Author Profile Page:

THERE IS NO REASON WHY EITHER BUSH OR CHENEY SHOULD RESIGN.

ONE OF THE FREEDOMS THEY REPRESENT IS THAT OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT FREEDOM OF SPEECH, WITHOUT WHICH YOUR COMMENTARY WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED -- RIGHT.

NEITHER ASKED BIN LADEN, ET. AL., TO ATTACK THE WORLD TRADE CENTER AND GIVEN THAT THE PENTAGON WAS AT LEAST A MILITARY TARGET, YOU HAVEN'T HEARD TOO MUCH UPROAR ABOUT THAT HAVING BEEN HIT ALSO.

THE FACT THAT NOT EVERYONE AGREES WITH "HOW" BUSH AND CHENEY RESPONDED TO THIS CLEARLY TERRORIST ATTACK AGAINST A CLEARLY CIVILIAN TARGET IS IRRELEVANT.

I DON'T SEE ANY HESITATION WHATSOEVER IN THE ISLAMIC WORLD TO ERECT SKYSCRAPERS -- WHY ???

WHY SHOULD ONLY AMERICA AND PERHAPS OTHER WESTERN SOCIETIES NEED TO HESITATE HERE AND, UNFORTUNATELY, WE BOTH KNOW THE ANSWER. IT IS WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE TARGET OF THE INFIDEL -- SOMETHING THAT TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE COMES FROM ISLAMIC TEACHINGS IN THE KORAN.

CHRISTIANITY ALSO HAS ITS RADICAL INTERPRETATIONS OF BIBLICAL TEXT, BUT YOU DON'T SEE THEM BEING CARRIED OUT, DO YOU.

NOW THAT AMERICA HAD ELECTED ITS FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT, WHICH WAS ALLOWED BY NOT FOLLOWING RADICAL RACIAL INTERPRETATIONS OF SCRIPTURE, AS WERE ONCE FOLLOWED IN SOUTH AFRICA, IT IS ISLAM THAT NEEDS TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP BY ALLOWING FOR CRITICAL KORANIC STUDIES TO BEGIN BY ESPECIALLY RESPONSIBLE ISLAMIC SCHOLARS [AND OTHERS] WITHOUT NEEDING TO WORRY ABOUT DEATH SENTENCES BEING IMPOSED ON THOSE WHO DO SO.

WHEN THAT HAPPENS, THERE WILL BE NO NEED FOR THE KINDS OF ACTIONS UNDERTAKEN BY BUSH AND CHENEY TO ARGUABLY PRESERVE LIBERTY -- UGG.

It seems hard to imagine that Dr Ettafagh really means this at face value - the suggested action is clearly absurd to anyone who knows the US. But if it is satire it is too clever for me.

However, some of the comments on this forum are out of line. Before the glow of this historic election fades and the fine words about bipartisan support ebb away, how about we all make a renewed effort to be civil in our disagreements?

I wish this format would allow for the original poster to chip in later and respond to the comments.

Obama needs to try to squeeze all the cooperation from the leftover Bush administration he can before he leaves office in some 70 days. How much help in transition do you think he will get if he were stupid enough to rail against him like this? Zero.

JTMoney1 Author Profile Page:

Dr. Ettefagh is clearly ignorant of the United States government, namely the line of succession. In the event the President and Vice President have to step down, the President pro tem steps in, which is the highest ranking Senator. That honor is currently held by Robert Byrd (D-WV). Had this happen in real life instead of some crackpot's imagination, Obama would have nothing to do with it anyway. He doesn't know what the he.ll. he is talking about.

You're crazy. Why would Obama do something so foolish. This is a lame duck administration anyhow. You can't wait two and a half more months? Sheesh.

Anybody else creeped out by an Iranian with an obvious grudge against our current leaders using analogies such as "The skyscrapers of debt are still on fire" and "These burning twins of destruction."

Oh, and if Mr. Ettefagh thinks the Obama camp should just now begin enlisting the media he hasn't been paying attention.

Seriously, how can the WaPo post this tripe? Do we really take Mr. Ettefagh's calls for a media-led campaign to unseat Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney as purely altruistic in nature? Is there perhaps a hidden agenda here, either of Mr. Ettefagh's own making or more likely, Mr. Ahmadenijidad (sp?).

brickerd Author Profile Page:

What a ridiculously naive post.

First of all, neither Bush nor Cheney WOULD resign, so what is the point, exactly? Second, Obama's request that Bush and Cheney resign would initiate a fight that would inevitably turn a fair portion of conservatives against a new and fresh Obama administration, when what's needed right now is a good faith commitment to collaborate.

The problem with some of my fellow liberals is that they are so angry about their treatment by conservatives, they engage in hateful, vindictive, and most importantly, UNPRODUCTIVE behaviors that ultimately harm everyone.

Grow up, Ali. Grow up, then come back here and post something worth reading.

I agree Bush should resign immediately so that we can stop all the damage his deregulation is going to do to the environment.

I find it ironic that a man who promoted himself as a pro-life christian is now at the end of his tenure doing things that will hurt the unborn and children the most.

Resign GWB resign and Dick you do the same!

wolfcastle Author Profile Page:

Ali Ettefagh must be a fool because Bush and Cheney resigning would mean that Pelosi would be president for a little while, and she's crazier than Bush...

jfern03 Author Profile Page:

It would be helpful for Obama to act immediately on certain measures. Bush and Cheney don't have to resign immediately, though I would not object to that at all, personally, but it won't happen.

I do trust that Bush wants desperately to run from the office to return to Crawford, drive his F-350 all over his compound, and cut down weeds for the rest of his days. So much so, that he will be most willing and open as far as a transition is concerned.

Between now and Inauguration Day, there is still plenty of time for Bush and Cheney to shred and otherwise destroy any items which would shed light on their criminal behaviour of the last 8 years.

As someone who did not vote for President-elect Obama, I am happy to agree with you and I hope your optimism bears out. I am a fire-breathing conservative, but Mr. Obama will be my president as well and I wish him success in the things you cite. I hope this ushers in a new era when we can agree and disagree in a civil fashion.

I think you are smoking too much opium.

joewashington1 Author Profile Page:

As many throughout the world have been frustrated by the last 8 years, particularly Iran, discussing whether Bush/Cheney should or would resign early is absurd. Having voted for Obama, I don't want transition chaos. Don't expect massive changes now with Obama. Iraq will be wound down, Afghanistan will be the focus. A strong dollar will be a priority. Everything will come back stonger than ever.

Most Americans believe that we should stay hands off on Iran - because we believe it will implode on its own - Sunni/Shia, Persian/Arab, Iran/West and all the overlap. Why else would the USA hold off the Israelis? No gas refinery capability, no oil profits if its below $70/barrel.

You need to take your individual freedom for yourself and don't need anyone else's help. Good luck. I always remember my father speaking fondly of his time in Teheran and the people of your country. There is room for Iran to be a role model to the Arabs. Accept the role with the responsibility.

foutsc Author Profile Page:

What a wonderful country this is where we allow people like this man to foist his utterly ridiculous pro-Iranian opinions on our populace.

So you want Speaker Pelosi and Senate Pro-Tempore Byrd to fill the interregnum as President and Vice President, thereby leaving vacancies in those House and Senate positions?

You do realize Pelosi and Byrd would have to stand for reelection to regain their legislative positions?

Mr. Ettefagh is obviously ignorant of our constitution and therefor unqualified to be making such absurd pronouncements.

This isn't a faded, declining South West Asia empire where a doddering, obscurantist theocracy that funds terrorism tells the people what to do. This is America, and we have a constitution.

Somebody please educate this man on how Western democracy works before he embarrasses your pages further.

I suspect that Ali Ettefagh was playing the troll with this article, I would doubt that anyone in his position would really mean that. Obama has more sense than that and frankly the whole idea of prosecuting Bush and Cheney at this time is counter productive. We are entering a new era of hope and a Saddam style hanging of those two would be just as ugly. As one postglobal poster said when Saddam was hung: there will come a day where it will be the Americans chanting at their hanging and the chant will be OBAMA OBAMA....can someone find the link to that very interesting postglobal prediction? it would make my second delightful morning in a row!

I think that most of us can agree that Bush and Cheney have made a mess for this country to repair, but to force an early resignation? Surely more symbolic than pragmatic.

Such a move would surely appease a number of angry Americans and those abroad, but what good would it do this country? What foolish precedent would commence by demanding something like this? Come on, Obama has promised reconciliation to some degree, and forcing early resignation would only alienate a large group of Americans and take this nation back into the partisan frey.

By doing something like this, Obama would be no better than Bush and Cheney.

arjay1 Author Profile Page:

Ali Ettefag is trying to push American buttons without being able read the labels on them. Someday he might find out that the 300 megabit/sec Washington fiber optic network is too fast for him to do that because any conference by ANY elected is attended by all electeds in transition. Wonder if he will be able to push buttons after the Russians march into Tehran the way they have in the past.

Apparently Ali Ettefagh is totally ignorant as to how American democracy works. Given his ignorance he really should refrain from criticizing the workings of a real democracy.
Maybe he should focus his attentions on the failed mullahcracy that keeps Iran in the dark ages. Once he reforms the barbarism that rules that country then maybe his opinions will carry some weight...

ZZim Author Profile Page:

Ali, you are always good for a laugh. Don't you understand that all the stories about how Bush & Cheney are war-criminals is demagoguery and bombast? Nobody responsible really thinks any of that is true, and you would need the assistance of responsible people in positions of power to carry out your plan.

concerned25 Author Profile Page:

I love the guy that says kill-and-bomb. Even the liberals in this country don't call him that. I look forward to the day Iran joins the real world and doesn't think that it's 3rd rate leader can handle a first rate country. Please no one called for Carter's head to leave office early and he was a complete baboon. When Iran allows their people to have the ability to do research without government locking them away out of fear your opinion will matter. Thankfully that won't happen in my life time so your opinion will never matter to Americans. Like Truman in years to come Bush will be looked at as a strong leader. He made mistakes just like Obama states he will make. Calling for him to resign is almost the stupidest thing I've heard of. I say almost because I leave room for all Iran's current presidents comments to come before yours. So if you don't like our countries laws thats because you like your own countries laws. I don't push them on you. This is not the United States of the World and such the President of the USA is here to promote our needs not any one else's. HGSATO even brings liberals and conservatives together.

Hence, the first real step of the president-elect of the United States ought to be for a forceful demand for immediate resignation of the sitting president and his vice president.

You sir, are a loon.

davecatbone1 Author Profile Page:

Resignation? Why no. Actually, Congress should begin drafting the bill to introduce the articles of Impeachment against Barack Obama. His Campaign finance violations, effort to illegally hide his aunt, Zeituni Onyango, in his state, to illegally house her in public housing, and to even illegally employ her by the state, the fact that ACORN is involved in brazen voter fraud on behalf of Obama, and corruption with Antione Rezko all point to the need for the removal of Obama from the Senate, and the nullification of his election. America is a free Republic, No to Socialism, No to Obama.

yeolds Author Profile Page:

With all USA citizens seeing RED in the suggestion that Bush and Cheney resign, should contemplate the Constitution and amendments thereto, wherein there is no mention of the right of any elected politician from resigning for resons of the "family", "health" etc as seen often in varous guises of spin regarding private citizens parting from their job [either under duress, or for some perticular reasons].

The USA Constitution is clear: were President AND Vicepresident office be vacant at the same time the Speaker of the House is the person to whom the Job of Presidency falls [pro tem].

Indeed for the physical safety of the world [no new wars in the next 100 days] and for the economic well being of the world [need for quick action on a new international financial structure] opposed to the Washington Consessus [we are the deciders] so well embodied by the Bush adninstration the immediate resignation of Mr Bush and Mr Cheney would indeed be a gift from the gods.

This is the type of idea I would expect from someone that doesn't know how transitions work in a democracy. We do not live in a parliamentary system where the opposition has a shadow government.

Bush will remain president until January 20 - there will be plenty of time in the next four years for the Democrats to screw things. Be patient.

The world has been sent a message already by this election. The last thing we need is a new administration in place that hasn't had any time to figure out a plan or a team, or really a single policy yet. That truly would be a power vacuum. Not gonna happen.

To all pundits below:
Cutting national losses is priority 1, as the article clearly states.

1. It is legally possible. Nothing stops Bush-Cheney to do the decent thing and quit while they are ahead. Not that they admit that they have been wrong on just about everything. However, they should consider themselves lucky that they did not face the disgrace of impeachment.

The 3rd in line, the Speaker of the House, will be president pro tem, and she is from the winning party. At least, cabinet members will not go rogue.

2. It is a plausible idea, because that will make Obama a force to reckon with. And it will be a noted move in these very extraordinary times when the country is going broke, it is at war and Bush-Cheney might even attack Syria and Iran before they leave. Therfore, it is necessary, to stop any further damage done.

3. The observation that America does not have an early election law is interesting and perhaps the new America must have one, in case another Bush is elected president.

Arsenal_Fan Author Profile Page:

Someone doesn't understand how U.S. democracy or the U.S. Constitution works, do they? This is not only an unserious suggestion, it demonstrates the utter contempt some have for our country and our government. I hope Obama surprises them and me.

michaelbrazell Author Profile Page:

This is a brilliant idea. Obama, taking time away from healing the world, should subvert the United States Constitution with the help of the all powerful and entirely objective media to force, as the ever so brilliant 'HGCSATO' wrote, the "kill-and-bomb" president to resign. In fact, that's not far enough. Obama should also call upon his divine powers and smite those who disagree with this proposal and prepare for reeducation camps.

NoDonkey Author Profile Page:

Sure Ali, just as soon as you get your lunatic President Ahmadinejad to resign.

I demand Obama's resignation - his complicity in vote fraud clearly invalidates his "election" yesterday.

Correct. The sitting president has nothing to lose and he can take radical steps to press on with his ideology of kill-and-bomb his way without thinking beyond!
