The EU has proven to be a historic leap in trust of one’s neighbors and yesterday’s enemies and, for the time being, the best living example of a triumph of will over fears.

I like the reference about the only example of working things out. Ture. It is far from perfect but it is the only one that is working planet earth.
The comments of Zoltan below seems to grind an axe of some sort, it is this kind of hot-headed, but closed minded, comments that can usually divert a regular debate, which takes time and calm nerves to reach a result. What is certain that those that don't want to stay in the union can quit and go their way. It is not a mandatory force of will, is it?

Mr, Ettefagh, you say:
"less than one percent of all EU citizens have voted against"
And how many voted for ? I'll show you other statistics: 100% of the European people that have been asked voted against the Lisbon Treaty.
"an admittedly very complex treaty of 300 pages and very technical language."
Did you read it ? I did. It's not so much complex as evidently made incomprehensible: it's not a text per-se, but only modifications to existing texts, that you can not follow if you don't have the other texts at hand.
"Ireland owes its development of the last two decades to the EU and its generous grants[...]"
I translate: you got the money, now shut-up and say "yes" to whatever we tell you to say yes to. Do you realise how insulting such a remark is ?

It works because a majority of EU members do not have a presidential system, but a prime ministerial system, as representative of the Parliament, hence avoiding characters like George Bush. Even in UK, Brown is now paying the price for strong-headed views of Blair.
