Start with Cool Heads and Good Faith

The tense recent history leading to such talks has been remarkably devoid of any kind of diplomacy. The Bush era has seen intensified tough talk, with the baggage of recent history piled high on both sides of the table. These negotiations will take time, and won't go anywhere if they aren't done in good faith.

Dear Friends:

The world over, please think of the automobile as an instrument of fine tuning. The oil container can be one that is inserted into a container that is not housed in the same container or near the heat of the engine while it is released.

A longer more efficient device and value.

Build it make it happen the world over. Autos from all nations, what a thought.

I hate the thought of cookie cutter automobiles and design.

Dear Friends:

Thank you to the leaders of Iran and the people for releasing the American U. S. Scholar. It shows fortitude, respect, education, caring for many of the world.

You have set an example that is not any where near Osama Bin Laden. He is a criminal.
You have shown you are cautious and unparrelled when compared to Osama Bin Laden as he is a person who is a manic depressant, schizophrenic, parnoid, and pediphillia.

Your nation has shown leaders of the future that have a desire to protect and lead your children and people into the far future. You are setting the example for many nations of the Arab world by this act. Commendable and respectful.

Sharon M Walker, I am an American Citizen.

Could someone PLEASE stop attacking the messenger and just answer the damn questions posed by Mr Collins, IN A RATIONAL, OBJECTIVE manner, so we can move on with this discussion?

I have traveled extensively outside the country, am married to an Arab, and believe MOST muslims are decent people... however, it disturbs me greatly that VERY FEW muslim posters are willing to DIRECTLY address the issue of the Korans dictates with regards to violence.

speed123:

Something tells me that "frank collins" is not his real name.

You are an unrational, extremist and should be banned from these boards for lack of constructive contributions.

You, sir, are an ignorant bigot.

Are you an Israeli? Evangelical nutcase? Jewish Hawk?

What did Muslims ever do to you to deserve such crap that you write?

Question:

To oster FRANK COLLINS-

As I understand it, you say that Muslims are naturally violent. Now, can you please explain to me why is it that the per capita rate of violent crime (gunshot wounds, murder, rape, other violent crimes) is much higher in USA (which is an advanced, educated and industrialised country) than just about every other place on this planet, and especially in comparison with Muslim countries (with the possible exception of post-invasion Iraq)?

As for my second question, it is about the overall rate of criminal convictions and people with a criminal conviction history as a percentage of the entire population (about 10% in USA)?

Buzz:

Well, looks like none of the posters read the headline and the contents of Dr. Ettefagh's article above and his emphasis on cool heads and good faith...on both sides!

This fellow that has made several comments above, Frank Collins, appears to have missed the main theme of the article above and has preferred to go for more violence. Hundreds are dead every day in Iraq after the American invasion and Iraqis had safe streets (if nothing else). Now this American poster thinks that it is better to confront more people on this earth with violence! Some body has to tell this man that those that a strong will always wins and if the other side is ready to kill himself to show his will, Mr. Collins will never win. Remember Cuba? Cubans won their revolution, simply because they were prepared to die for it. Ditto for Vietnamese and the VietCong.

Copy & paste:

Mr. Collins is probably sitting in an office just pasting ready-mades delivered by somebody. Paid very week to sit there and jam every conversation that somebody is afraid of.

Go on Frank! You work faster!

Kam-Korder:

"Iran and america don't have dirt in common. so why not answer the question i asked above - how do you negotiate with people who think that god ordered them to kill you?" so wrote Mr. Collins.

But we do have a lot in common. They have oil and we have our gas-guzzling SUVs. So, let us cut all this religous bull and start negotiating in good faith. Think about it Frank, when next time you run out of gas and have to push your car in the middle of the freeway. The same "God" that gave them oil, gave you SUVs! Shake hands and be friends.

Hello Every One:

Looks like the medication of poster Frank Collins has run out! ... or that he thinks he can either change or boycott or do some thing about 1 billion Muslims on this planet.

Chinese doll:

To Frank Collins--

Sounds like you are punch drunk from your own brand of interpretations. It was your president that mistook fighting extremist terrorists of the Al Qaeda type with a "Crusade" of the religious type. I think poster Kam-Koder has said it best that all Abrahamian religions are rooted in the same semitic violence that is occupying a lot of attention in the world, too much attention in fact. You Americans, whether Christian or other, are very violent people and your society has a very high rate of violent crime....that has nothing to do with Muslims.

Reza from Tehran:

hi , there

I am a journalist in Tehran and I can't forget the quintessential step taken by the then Madam secretary Albright.I think that time there was a good intention of Clintons' admin but it was rebuffed by Mr.Khamenei.I think Mr.Khameneis excusing for rebuffing any compromise was and still is what he calls U.S's arrogant stance.
I just think this time america sees how miserably is in bog.
Anyway I don't see any trouble if both sides try to open embassy here in Tehran and in Washington.
I also appreciate Mr.Khameneies intervention to take a breakthrough step towars solving the issues .you can see how hardliners here in Tehran even attack the suprem leader and even they accuse him to cowardice. But every body knows that this round of talks commenced because Mr.Khamenie backed it , however his dubious signals in Mashad on northwest of Iran showed how hard was the decision making process(even suprem leader with his massive charismatic influence on exterimists has no full control on the fanatic forces )
So the next step would be very critical , I think both Iran and america has the common interest in Iraq and middleeast .Iran is not a superpower so America can negotiate with Iran more easily and perhaps can appease her easily .Iran has very structural economic problems , Americas hegemony in Mideast is under threat by the Iraqs unseen future.Iran can help America to pacify Iraq and America can help Iran to modrnise its economy.
If Some elements of Bush admin think they can control Iran by the old scenario they used during coldwar era they mistake.
Iran is essensialy a different entity .It is not a communist state as Russia was.
Iran is a pseude-Democracy.Its econmy is market oriented and there are some market favoured groups which shows interets in open economy (the latest revision of article 44 of constitution by suprem leader is a prove).
So it would be better for both sides to engage in a full cooperative diplomacy.
I think its the responsiblity of politicians and thinkers and ,,,, of both sides to find mutual points and common interests to expand the new born relation.

Kam-Korder:

Please everyone. Should we address the main issue raised by Dr. Ettefagh?

Impeach:

Frank Collins

You just proved that you are intellectually challenged as you simply assumed that I am a Muslim and asked you a question to confront you. I bet you voted for Bush too.

Any way, it is people like you that makes this world crazy and beyond reason. And for your other assumptions about Iraq, I wonder why your kind of "always right" cannot win a war against a cream puff called Al Qaeda. And if you are so mighty, where is Bin Laden, my boy? Find him and kill him if that is your way of getting off!

Ted Baines:

Impeach

You must believe that the Sunnis and Shias who kill about 50 of each other's cult members daily are from the USA.

Kam-Korder:

Poor Dr. Ettefagh. All he wanted was to have a dialogue for peace and reconciliation, instead he got a bunch of nonsense from religious nuts. I couldn't help but reply to all of them in a blanket answer.

kam-korder:

Poor Dr. Ettefagh. All he wanted was to have a dialogue for peace and reconciliation, instead he got a bunch of nonsense from religious nuts. I couldn't help but reply to all of them in a blanket answer above.

Kam-Korder:

"WANT PEACE - ELIMINATE ISLAM FROM THE FACE OF THE GLOBE," so writes Frank Collins.
I have a sad news for you and others who think along these lines. Islam has its roots in Christianity and Judaism just as Christianity has its roots in Judaism. These three Semitic religions that claim to have originated from the teaching of the same mythical person Abraham, are inherently violent religions. Sad to say that eventually animosity between these three so-called Abrahamian religions will lead to the annihilation of human race. I hope I won't be around to witness it.

Impeach:

FRANK COLLINS-
Have you ever visited a Muslim country? or should I first ask, have you ever had a passport and travelled outside North America?

Secondly, let us assume you are right. What the hell are you Americans doing in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and of course Iraq and Afghanistan? Why don't you just get back to your own little closed and small world, or at least to Israel where all is peachy and there is no torture??

You seem to forget that you Americans, and not other Muslims, have roughed up Iraq beyond recognition!

Bimbo:

Gee...I thought the question and the discussion was about diplomacy! But it seems that there is little difference between American militants (like Frank Collins above) and Al Qaeda militants, that want to focus on violence and blood rather than coexistance and peace.

Too bad...really, really too bad!

Saul:

Mr. Collins,

May I suggest a cold shower twice a day. I don't know your background but as I look around myself, everywhere from Palestine, Israel, Iraq, etc. real people are putting their emotional energy on getting out of the cycle of violence. Don't tell me your personal frustrations that are reflectd in these writings are more painful and unmangeable than theirs.

Fred, Bos:

Frank Collins :

You wrote "iran has not told the truth about anything. they are suppling the terrorists in iraq in an effort to destabilize the government and kill our soldiers".

Iran does not have anything to say about the resistance in Iraq or hide anything about it, for that matter too. there are many many Americans who never believed, well before the war too, about the legitimacy of this invasion and occupation and likewise, have accepted the fact unlike the projection of the media and a warmongers like yourself, that those fighting the occupiers are the resistant fighters who oppose the invaders who ever that might be. The whole world, and that includes all the Americans who believe and value the American values and unlike those Americans who undermine the American values and who have hijacked this country's foreign policies solely for the benefit of their real country, knew and know that the US went to Iraq and are there currently too in order to loot the only natural resource Iraq has or will ever have and yet and as usual, you never lose any opportunity to come here and misuse the space the WP has provided its readers to debate the core of the articles on hand and make a total fool of yourself endlessly too,.
Further, did you ever raise a voice or concern when Saddam encouraged by US, but unprovoked by Iran, invaded Iran and subsequently supplied with intelligence from US that resulted in the death of nearly one million Iranians, needless to mention, the atrocities the Iraqis committed against the Iranians while invading, ?
Under normal circumstances, a country like Iran should help those Iraqis to resist the occupation but since JUST AND JUSTICE is the core of Persian culture and the believe in it and believing those qualities would prevail even the guns and tanks, Iran has correctly chosen to let the time to tell this to Americans.

Iran Doost:

Dr. Ettefagh,

Thank you for your comments. One thing is for sure. The peaceful, prosperous world of tomorrow will not be build by those who make venemous remarks on these posts.

C53:

Mr. Ettefagh,

It must have been very difficult for the American diplomats at that meeting on our Memorial Day, speaking with representatives of a country which is actively engaged in killing American soldiers.

Yes, our government has made mistakes, notably the assumption that Iraq had WMD, an assumption shared by Iran at the time. Had we been correct, Iran would have been one of the main beneficiaries. I don't remember hearing much complaint from Iran at the time when war was imminent. This is one of the main difference between our countries. We are guided by the will to improve the lot of mankind. Your country could care less.

Our country might be governed by "clueless" people who "don't have a passport", as you say. On the other hand, your country is governed by a man who says the Holocaust didn't happen and seeks the extermination of an entire race of people. A man who governs by intimidation and force, who puts the needs of his people secondary to the maniacal hateful agenda of a radical religious minority.

I know which side I would rather be on.

HN:

Keep in mind one simple idea: the Iranian nuclear threat is a reality we will be living with for years to come. No amount of bombs will be able to destroy the knowledge that they have gained.

Here are the realities:
- Both sides lie
- Both sides have economic reasons for doing what they are doing
- Both sides need the other to be able to succeed.

Assuming you agree with my premise that knowledge can't be destroyed by a bomb, what does NOT talking accomplish for either side?

For the US to talk would be "humiliating?"
For the Iranians, talking would be admitting that you can't ignore a (powerful) enemy?

Arrogance has gotten us here, let's not allow ignorance to lead to the untold deaths of thousands!

LJM:

You are right about needing talks between people who have cooler heads and can come from a place of mutual respect. Doesn't seem like the right people have been chosen for this diplomatic mission from either country. Each side has sent someone with total loyality to their "leader" and not from the perspective of what is the common good for all the people. Any average American, Iraqi and Iranian could have done a better job of diplomacy than happened at that table in Baghdad. If the Bush administration were serious about discussions with Iran, they would send someone like George Mitchell to work the diplomacy from the American side. Iran needs the Iranian "George Mitchell" to advocate for Iran i such talks.

Think violence and you will feel violence.

Dear Frank Collins,

Think violent thoughts and you will see violent actions

May god bless you
