As an Iranian American, I actually found this article too nationalistic, which I don't like to hear from anyone. Excessive national pride is what caused America's ghost war on terror. I don't like Israel's apartheid like regime (quite factual and hypocrital for people who suffered mass murder during WWII), nor do I like US truly stupid and greedy foreign policy. It dilutes the great American know how the world was used to seeing. But I don't like how Iran's elite mullahs (like old elite Shah which the supposedly freed the people from). They are too wasteful and hypocrites will not go to heaven (assuming there really is one-another story I know).

Secondly, Iran has a very clear choice and right under th NPT treaty: simply quit the treaty! It is not getting the benefits of being a treaty member anyway, under Art. 4. Art. 4 of NPT mandates and requires other member states to help treaty members and provide them with technology and materials. That has not happened. Finally, Iran has a 10% share in FramAtom, the French fuel processing company. It is even denied supplies from its own company!

Well, that is what has been *said*, mostly; but ...

1. The IAEA has found the regime unwilling to do what is necessary to build confidence about that.

2. If the Iranian leaders were just interested in energy, they would likely accept "the Russian deal", which would be a very, very reasonable compromise to reach this energy goal, at little or no tangible cost.

On one occasion, Ahmadi-Nejad threatened "full scale enrichment". What is that except an outright admission that nuclear weapons are on their mind.

In full view of the rest of the Iranian leadership, he also welcomed Iran into the "nuclear club". This phrase has never, ever be used to denote those countries with just nuclear energy programs (that I know of).

All this stuff about Bush-vs.-Iran has some significance, but don't let's forget that the European Nations took the lead in talks with Iran, while the USA sat aside. After all, they are the ones increasingly in the range of Iran's "defense", but *Holy*, conventional missles (as described by the Supreme Leader himself).

Myself, I cannot see any reason why Iran couldn't deal its way to a safe, transparent nuclear energy program.

At the same time, whatever "they" (whomever is truly making these decisions inside Iran, which is not always 100% clear) think that Nuclear weapons are going to bring to them are probably mistaken. It may destabilize their region further and it is doubtful it will act as a deterrent, and may even put Iranians in the target zone should a rogue weapon go off sometime in the future, because there is so little trust and confidence in the Iranian regime held by others (not just the US).

Our complex system of economic management is slowly growing towards the private sector. It is gradual as there is not enough capital in the private sector to buy into large privatisations. The Americans say that they want to help Iranian people (that is to say, the private sector) but have sanctions and scare away foreign investors for this large dynamic and sophisticated market.

So, hard to believe that the Americans are telling the truth.
